When you get too old to turn wrenches and it's time to retire, you should think about becoming an instructor at a technical school! You would make a great teacher and I think guys like you would make a great asset to the next generation of automotive technicians!!

5.4L 3-valve. Thank you. I think you just reminded me of what I forgot to do. I lost some fluid onto to top of my engine when I moved the crossover out of the way. Had to get the intake plenum out to swap out the temp sensor. Ford assembly is done before the body is set on the chassis during assembly. All of the back of the engine is easy to access and assemble while there is no body or firewall, or floorboards, or kick plates, or toe board... no fenders, grill or hood. That's why they're so hard to work on ex post facto, after the fact.

I have a 2000 5.4 that was leaking from the crossover gasket on the thermostat side..thermostat bolts go through the intake and into the head(long bolt)..the coolant leak siezed one of the bolts and of course broke off in the head so i had to remove the intake.once removed about 3/8in of the bolt was sticking out.After pb blaster / free all and fresh vise grips i had to drill and tap but was able to avoid helicoil..has been about 4 years since with no problems but yesterday it started missing and thats why I'm here..long story short ford gaskets dont like coolant and a thermostat should always be easily serviceable...great video,great advice!

Ford has had the same issues with coolant running into the sparkplug wells for so many years. You'd think they'd listen to the customers and figure something else out. What a great engineering feat. Put a plastic intake on the top of a hot metal intake. I remember the first time I pulled a coil pack plug I thought I had a crack in the block!

Excellent!!! Thank you brother! I have 2007 Ford F-150.... In my case pressure washing was culprit. I like the have a clean motor, but sometimes that comes at a price! I usually blow off my engine, then run a fan on it for 24 hours before I even crank it, however I realize now that water won’t dry out of the spark plug ports. I always shoot blaster down the ports, and wait a few hours before removing my plugs. I heard it’s a nightmare if you break one off! Thanks again! I think I will just live with a dirty motor over causing myself these problems.

In a LOT of the 4.6 and 5.4 engines, if you EVER throw a P0307 code, replace the coil pack ($50, ouch when often-repeated) and then within a month are replacing that same coil pack again, you BETTER be pulling your cam cover and checking all your followers too! 99% of the time, that 'can't find the miss' you keep patching with a new coil, is in fact, one of your intake cam followers has blown the bearings out, and excessive lash has allowed it to 'walk out' and lay in the oil galley...until it is chewed up enough to drop and destroy your valvetrain! If this happens, goodbye engine. Before that happens, if you find a cam follower off, TOSS IT (no guys, do not re-use it!!!) and replace the now-worn cam and ALL followers...the effort is WELL WORTH the effort!

I actually watched your video,and looked in or at the area where the Thermostat Housing,was located,and I didn't see any Anti Freeze?but there is a leak in that area, it must be a small leak,but never the less a leak,because there was Antifreeze that had leaked down into #5 Spark Plug port.And I only found that out after I removed all of the COP's,plus Spark Plugs,on the passenger side,and then I proceeded to the drivers side.And ,so,I removed the Air intake cleaner,and Duck,and then the first COP I removed was #5,and that's when I noticed moister, on the surface of the COP's Spark Plug Boot,and Antifreeze down in the Spark Plug port So thanks for your video, as that was my problem,and I will look closer tomorrow,to try to see where the Antifreeze is leaking from,but thanks again for you video. .

Ron, you might want to also mention to everyone that when tuning up engines, sometimes putting to much dielectric grease into the spark plug boots will also create a misfire condition. I fought an intermittent miss in my Escape only to figure out there was a lot of grease inside the boots. Once I removed and cleaned all the boots the problem was gone!

Had to file 3/8ths to slip cross over pipe back in without taking alternator off or the intake manifold. Also one on the bottom of driver side that is some piece for coolant and oil. Had that one blow and mix in the engine and I caught just in time to to flush oil and coolant twice replace gasket and a few coilpacks on passenger side which were my intermittent misfires

If you are getting misfires an issue you would never suspect can be the coolant itself. The Ford garage chased a stalling issue for me for over three weeks. In the end they could not eliminate this issue and it eventually was fixed by me changing to fresh coolant. We coolant and two different metals creates a battery and the current will throw off the sensors and cause a misfire by sending the engine and ecu into a lean condition. Been chasing this issue for a complete year and had the truck into two different Ford garages. Items done to my truck: New battery New plugs New air filter New fuel filter Cleaned MAF Cleaned throttle bodies Cleaned IAC valve Checked all hoses for vacuum leaks Changed transmission speed sensor Swaped fuel pump relay Changed ECU None of this fixed the issue so the next direction was going to see if the fuel pump or regulator was going out. Changed coolant.......all problems gone. Just finished putting 2500 miles on the truck. No stalling. Not saying this is your issue but this did not throw a code to indicate a lean condition. We did get some cray electrical errors such as the Ford scan saying the engine was at 5200 rpm while idling. Most important item I learned form this is make sure your basic maintenance is up to date. I bought my truck over two years ago and should have changed the coolant in order to set a baseline. Failure to do so cost me lots of time and some money @$1700 and it all might have been the coolant aging out. Thank you for your video as it helped me compile a list of things to check.

He probably said that knowing what most people know and that is that the industry is literally catered to engineering failures passed off as must have been the best choice because at some point it's going to support the industry like making it hard for you to do the job yourself or needing a special tool regardless. A good example would be in the industry Honda likes to put power steering lines right in your way of the belt tensioner so forget about putting a socket on there or getting any kind of wrench on there they could have lowered or raised this line up to 2in but no they put it right in our way so you have to literally buy a special crows foot type ranch or something I mean and those usually come in a set and not to mention it really makes the leverage thing really hard for you so I'm a 200 pound guy that can bench press 300 lb and even I took that sucker down to the shop because I didn't want to deal with it all because of a power steering line in my way when it could have been 2 in lower... Sorry I had to say all that but I'm willing to believe even this guy knows what I'm talking about and even this guy was probably hinting at what I just said in a way because these Engineers are in fact brilliant that's what makes them so brilliant they know how to map this stuff out so the DIY guy gets pushed to the side for a minute and the industry is held up for just another minute...

DONT REPLACE WITH FACTORY GASKETS..A lot of the problem with the rubber deteriorating is when Ford Engineers designed it there was no ethanol in the fuel. Later on 10% ethanol which is basically like rubbing alcohol it dries and cracks the gaskets. The good thing is gasket companies like felpro have made gaskets from different material that holds up to the drying of ethanol.

Hey Ron it was nice talking to you the other day . I was the one with the 427 Ford. I asked you why there was a idle circuit for the front carb on the 427 and you replied that having the idle circuit on the front balances out the engine for fuel delivery which I agree with . You stated that having only the center carb for the idle circuit will cause the engine to run lean on the forward banks. Here is my other question? I have a 65 GTO with the factory Tri power I have a 400 bored out .030 over 10.5 forged pistons 428 HO heads with a isky Cam 475 lift 292 duration and it only has the idle circuit on the center carb I have never had a lean condition on this engine even with the cam and 428 HO heads . The linkage is progressive. I do agree with what you are saying but I have also proved that is not true running only a center carb with the outer carbs with no idle circuit. On a progressive linkage I still don't understand why Ford put in a idle circuit on the front carb? If it was direct linkage and all carbs ran the same time yes you would need the idle circuit . Thanks for the videos very well done!
@SandCarServices
@SandCarServices 5 жыл бұрын
Okay think of it this way. The idle circuits themselves are not affected for the most part by the throttle plate. The idle circuits use a suction effect from vacuum below the throttle plate.
@madmanmechanic8847
@madmanmechanic8847 5 жыл бұрын
@@SandCarServices I totally agree with what you are saying in principle . All I am saying is the rest of the manufactures with multiple progressive carburetors there are no provisions for the idle circuits for the front and rear carbs and they run fine even with the performance build on my Pontiac 400 it has never had a lean condition with only one carb with the idle circuit, I think Ford might of been in a hurry to develop the 427 and put a standard Holley 4150 series with a idle circuit on this engine for the front carb when it wasn't needed. All my point is the rear carb is centered on the intake for the primary's the engine would run fine with just a idle circuit for one carb. Case in point the Chrysler 440 six pack Holley 2300 series and they ran the same set up on the Chev 427 and that was 435 HP that is more cubic inch than the 427 and they run fine with just one idle circuit Now if the carbs were not progressive the front carb would need the idle circuit . I totally agree with what you are saying and the principle but the idle circuit on my 427 for the front carb really isn't needed . I will have to get them balanced when I get the engine done . Thank you for your very informative videos they are very well done . Keep up the good work.! After seeing the hell you have been through I don't see a Ford 5.4 in my near future hahahahahah

I will never buy another Ford. I had a 2007 F150 with a Triton V8. In 2010 the VTC went bad due to oil ports in the engine were too small and oil could not get to the top of the engine well causing the engine to fail at 70, 000 miles. Ford knew about the engine flaw but did nothing to cover or help cover it. I bought it new in early 2008. It lasted 2 years. And yes the oil was changed regularly with the correct weight. Bought a Chevy Silverado and have had zero issues with it for 8 years.

Ive had good luck with all 4 brands i put them on the work trucks to see which one would give out first on these old engines. On my truck im trying standard heavy duty and they look pretty well made.

Denso coils rock! That's the brand our 2008 Hyundai Entourage came with and they are still going strong with 175k miles. Also, from past experience stay away from the "Deal" brand coils. I was tempted because of their low price but ended up re-replacing them in less then 10k miles. Lessons learned about going with cheap coils.

Been having misfire problems with my 5.4 L Triton and I'm about to burn it to the ground because nothing has worked and I can't afford to dump any more money into it. Then I came across this video so hopefully this is the answer cause I've only owned the truck about a year and a half. 🤦

To think I junked my old reliable 97 with V6 5Sp cause I figured it wasnt worth having a clutch put in it......thought the newer truck was a smart move. Wrong this is the worst vehicle I have owned in 40 yrs of drivin

My 2000 F150 with the 5.4 has # 1 cylinder misfire. Have switched coil with cylinder 3 plus new plugs. Ran great for 3 weeks and the misfire came back on cylinder 1. Only misses till it warms up. I know it’s not the coil. So I am going remove the intake and check the cross over tube. There’s no visible signs of a leak. Not happy with ford engineering.

You might have something there that's what happening to my Expody 5.4 liter. Mechanic changed all plugs and coils and was running great first few days and then misfiring returned. Took it back and he could not find the problem. Second mechanic was recommended to me says what your saying, moisture leak from around valve covers or therm. area. I sure hope he is right b/c this shit is costing me some serious dinero. Thanks for the video. Will let you know what was the misfire problem if he can find it.

My rough idle was a misfire caused by dead coil. And when driving normally, the truck would start shaking as if my engine and transmission were loose when I'd get to about 55± mph, just to find out it was bc an unfired cylinder caused so much imbalance. Replace coil, all good now. Id thinking it was something really bad or a multitude of stacked issues. Thankfully was easy fix. And I have 2004 F150 5.4

I recently had the same problem caused by a leaking Thermo Housing gasket but cyl #7 was the one shorted out. I was really worried because I had installed a Sparkplug Tread Repair Insert in #7 about 3 yrs ago and thought it might have gone bad. However, #7 spark plug bore was filled with green antifreeze with a trail leading back to the Thermostat Housing. I installed a new Coil/Boot/Plug and filled the Boot/Spring area with Dialectric Grease. Also filled around the plug after installing it and up the outsides of the Boot. The plug bore is literally packed full off grease. No miss or codes now! OverKill? Maybe, but no liquids will ever get in there again. Didn't greese up any other cylinders because I wanted to test if Heavy Use of Dialectric Grease was going to cause new problems. Also, will be installing Inserts in the other 7 cylinders in the future and Re-Gasketting the Intake which is a Knock-Off of a Dorman which is a Knock-Off of the Ford part. So far I've replaced 2 Intakes on my 4.6 Crown Vic and this one on my 5.4 SUV. BTW: I used the Time-Sert Thread Insert Repair Kit, same as what Ron uses, and have had no problems after installing the Insert. It's the best repair available but it's about $375 on Amazon and only good for 2 valve Tritons. You need a different $450 kit for 3 Valve Tritons. To me, it's worth it since I intend to do the other 7 cylinders on my 5.4 before leaving for a multi-month tour of the Eastern Half of the US in 2021. East Coast to the Rockies and Back, Main/KeyWest/Albuquerque/SaltLakeCity/SoNH and most everthing in between. The only priblem with re-threading with the head still installed is you really need a high-volume Air Supply to blow out the Aluminium Thread Scraps from the cylinder bore. Using Greese in/on the Tap's cutting threads is Hit and Miss on what might be left behind. A Master Mechanic has a couple of good YT Vids on using Grease to capture the cuttings but I just couldn't bring myself to use that methode. To Each their Own. I'll Buy a cheep Harbor Freight A/C unit to fill my large reserve tank and be able to sleep peacefully knowing I don't have scored cylinder walls. Ron has a couple of excellent vids on use of the Time-Sert kit and the needed work flow. Ron does Good Work........

The timesert kit is not near as good as the calvan kit. It does not have a hat on top of threads and in some cases I have seen destroyed a cylinder head when it blew out around the threads. I do not recommend anything but a calvan kit even with the quality control problems.

Its the dielectric grease still working out??? I had the same thought of just packing in dielectric grease to see if that would solve the problem. My 2002 E250 work van has been to the shop 4 times for the same exact reason misfiring on 3 and 7. They replaced those 2 coil packs and it's still doing it. I drive about 300mi a day and sometimes it doesn't skip and throws me back when I'm least expecting it to. Basically its random when it will missfire but when it starts is all day long. It's like riding a massage chair for 8hrs. it gets old quick. I hate taking it into the shop due to the amount of tools I have to move in and out everytime I take it.

Hey sir. I have high regard for mechanics, I myself am in a hands-on, physical trade plagued with seemingly endless and challenging diagnostic configurations. 15 years and I still run into unique problems daily. My trade is very dynamic in nature, so most of the time (if someone's trade involves physical application) I tend to be able to find a shit ton of overlap between their given trade and mine, sometimes large, sometimes small... But one trade that is just immune to that (aside from maybe a business perspective) is automotive maintenance. Even lumping you guys under a big, generic Engineering umbrella, based on the direction and field of your knowledge, I'd still likely have more work-related overlap and similarities with a recent general-engineering type graduate than you fellas... Modern combustion engine are just a mindfuck for me (hell, you can remove the word 'modern', it's not like I could tell the difference)... Anyway, pardon my ranting. I just wanted to express an appreciation for both what you do and how YOU do it... Unfortunately, this particular video does not apply to the misfire issue I'm having with my Triton. However, your inoffensive, plain-spoke style, and thorough explanations really, really help novices like me get a broader sense and an idea of just exactly what the fuck it is we're looking at and why the fuck we're looking at it. And even when that passage of knowledge is just of a general nature, those pieces of insight go a long way. For instance, I watched a few different videos possibly pertaining to my issue before arriving to this one, and even while the person graciously attempted to explain and dumb things down, it still sounded like greek to me. You did not appear to struggle one bit just putting the issue in front of you into laymen's terms (and so, just as a bonus, I did not experience any overwhelming, out-of-my depth feelings, which can really deter someone's ambition of further understanding). The particular issue with this engine does not apply to my own, but through your video I picked up a solid handful of little relevant pieces of information that provided me a better, more structured view and understanding that will help me on my way to the correct diagnosis and fix. Anyway (again) thanks for not only what you do, but the particular way you do it. Props and respect. XOXO, Mr. Butt Hymen
