Use latex gloves at all times when handling the trap--even when you first take it out of its packaging. Then at least they won't be smelling YOU directly, they'll be smelling the latex. They are also smelling the plastic and metal parts of the trap, no matter what you do. All of these scents probably make the rats leery. What I have found as one of the best ingredients to use in catching the rats using snap traps is PATIENCE. Just leave the baited trap out undisturbed for days, even weeks, if necessary (as long as the proper amount of bait remains in the trap--if not, you'll have to re-bait the trap.) In my world, the rat traps haven't caught any rats the first night that I put 'em out. (I usually put out two or three of the Tom Cat snap traps that you can set with your foot underneath the house. I have a crawl space door that I can open and set a few traps in.) I think the earliest success I've had was on the 4th night. That's about 100 hours after I put the traps out and then just left them alone after that, folks. Success can take a while with the traps. The rats need to get used to seeing them and smelling your offerings until they get comfortable enough to insert themselves into the danger zone and set the traps off. It's a waiting game........ I've actually left the traps alone and caught some rats between 2-3 weeks later--so in my experience, they MIGHT successfully yield some trapped rats for you even weeks later if you just leave them alone (keeping an eye on bait levels, of course). Handle the traps as little as possible--always with the latex gloves--and JUST WAIT. Yes, it is possible that you CAN handle them with your bare hands and still trap some rats, but you may have a better success rate if you avoid marking the traps with your scent. This makes the rats very leery, as you might imagine after watching this video. Also, seeing the rats just grab the food right out of the bait cup and make off with it in this video was painful to watch, as it's UTTERLY LAME to use bait that they can just grab right out of the bait cup and make off with without setting off the trap. It's 110% true that you absoutely MUST use something that the rats are not only highy attracted to, but which will also be virtually impossible for them to clean out of the bait cup without setting the trap off. Peanut butter has worked well for me so far. Make sure that you smoosh the peanut butter down into that bait cup all the way, removing any air pockets so that you get maximum adhesion of the peanut butter to the inside of the cup, and fill it till it mounds up just slightly in the middle past the top of the bait cup. Wipe off ANY AND ALL excess peanut butter that gets smeared around during the process of baiting the cup. You want the presentation to be such that the rat wants to get his nose right down in there and start licking where he is most likely to spring the trap--at which point, hopefully he'll try to move in for more bait, and set the trap off by sticking his paw up on that plastic plate that has the hole to the bait cup in it, which gets cocked into position when you set the trap. It is THAT plate around the bait cup that springs the trap when the rat steps on it, and gives it enough downward pressure to spring it. Again, it's the downward force on that particular plate that springs the trap. Without that force, the trap will remain unsprung--and some rats almost seem to know it, and seem to want to eat what's in the cup without stepping on the plate, or putting enough downward force on it to spring it. Their level of savvy and cleverness in that regard seems eerie at times. Also, I have found that I need to anchor my traps to something that's too heavy for a rat that's only caught by its paw or tail, etc., or one of their predators (such as a possum or cat) to make off with--which sometimes can means the disappearance of not only the rat, but my $8 Tom Cat snap trap to boot. After having a couple of them completely vanish off the face of the Earth, you start realizing that anchoring them so that they'll still be there when you go to check on them is a pretty wise idea. The Tom Cat black plastic snap traps (which you can set with your foot--no broken fingers!!) have holes in them that you can use to put some screws in to anchor the traps to wood. The heavier the wood or other object is that you anchor the traps to, the better. I anchor two or three traps to a 2" by 6", and then I attach THAT to something that's impossible for the rat to run off with, and then I put an upside-down milk crate over the whole thing so that only creatures the size of a rat (but not an adult possum or cat) can gain access to the trap(s). I have a mouse who has outsmarted 3 of my snap traps and I have the owltra electric trap. The mouse seems to know that it's a trap. Maybe I will wash the trap this time and use gloves like you suggested. I found the information helpful. I even did what this person did and put peanuts and the mouse ate all the peanuts well this time I put peanut butter but the mouse has not touched any of the spring traps. Where as before the Owltra trap I have that's electric has caught 3 mice so far. So. After this I don't know what I am doing wrong.

My buddy has these rats in his garage. They’re smarter than most inner city youth. He was using this same trap and dog kibble to try and catch them. The rats were so big that they could reach into the trap and pull the kibbles out by hand. He has since then resorted to a peephole and a 10/22 Ruger

if they are in his garage they are probably brown rats not roof rats ,,roof rats are more shy than brown rats and like high places like rafters and attics ,,roof rats also called black rats ,rattus rattus ,,,as opposed to the more aggressive ,and larger brown rat ,commonly called norway rat ,,rattus norvegicus ,,these will infest barns and buildings and dig up foundations and floors anywhere they have a food source ,, brown rats usually displace the black rats because they are more aggressive , larger and breed faster

I have never had rats on my pig farm until last summer. I have tried feeding them many different foods to try to find something they are attracted by so that I can use a trap. Only thing the damn rats want is pig feed. Tried chocolate, peanut butter, peanuts, sunflower seeds, potato chips, cheese, crackers, corn chips, corn nuts, cashews, cheese crackers, ect. Only thing that I have found is to mix pig feed and a commercial meal bait poison. They eat only the pig feed out of the mix. And to go after dark and shot with pellet gun. Any suggestions???????

I’m a rodent specialist, 1) if washing the trap. Some use any soaps or chemicals. 2) bare with me, a “used” trap(one that’s caught one already) has a higher chance of success. 3) I highly recommend using snap traps(victor, yellow plated) 4) yes always always wear gloves! 5) rats are neophobic they’re very afraid and cautious of new things5) please done throw poisons down 6) best way is the have a tech close all possible entry points to prevent further entry and to starve them to help with the bait

Don't use solid food. That food can be picked up and carried away. Need to use Soft malleable foods... ex. Peanut butter 1st choice. Gets mice every time... so far. : ) Hopefully same for rats.
