Roofing Shingles Pull Test-- Tamko Titan verses Owens Corning Duration with Sure Nail Technology

Roofing Shingles need to resist strong winds. Will the new Tamko Titan Shingle pass the standard set by Owens Corning Duration Shingles?
Sergei from Roof It Right and Steve Hancock from Cross Country Distributing in Louisville, KY put both brands to the test.
According to the manufacturer, Owens Corning Duration Shingles with Sure Nail Technology require 6 nails per sheet, while Tamko Titan Shingles only require 4. Will that be enough?

I have seen neighbors with the Tamko and the pieces of it on their lawn after a high wind episode. I'm 70 years old and always used Owens Corning. They have NEVER let me down.

Compare the adhesives. If it gets to the nail line having to hold, the shingle has already lost the battle, regardless of brand

I just inspected a Owens Corning roof for a Previous Customer. He went with a fly-by-night company who did a very cheap job on his roof. Owens corning duration shingles I am not very impressed with the quality of Owens Corning shingles anymore. I am installing thousands of squares of Tamko Heritage on apartment buildings for property management companies. I still prefer Certainteed Landmark for all my residential reroofing customers. I am willing to give the Tamko titan shingkes a try

Certainteed is now trash. I have a ton of them that I did about 3 years ago and they already look terrible. Pursued manufacturer warranty and all they do is offer to clean it one time. They don’t even have local reps.

Try it again with the nails on the bottom half of the nailing strip so the nails go through the common bond area with the OC shingle.

The nails don't look like they got placed in the correct reinforced zone for the OC shingle. Despite that it took a big part of the shingle to break away. The Tamko shingle however the nails tore through the shingle and looked even less reinforced.

Not impressed. Never have been with Tamko. Slipped right off those nails. The OC still had chunks attached. And like some of the other comments say, check the sealant. Tamko has always been a garbage product. As evidenced by every wind claim I've ever worked.

is Titan worth it? i have to reroof and was offered Tamko titan. just want to make the right decision. i am in the SWFL area.

I am not familiar with the Florida roofing market. Neither we install it here; the main brand that we use in KY is Owens Corning. I am comfortable recommending Duration and Duration Flex.

Florida code calls for 6 nails so the Tamko XT would be a decent choice... as long as the guys nail it correctly.

Flawed test. Both shingles perform very well on a roof. The major difference is what a contractor can sell it for in the home. In most markets OC Duration demands a $75-$100 more per square. Both contractor and supplier should be equally satisfied.

This testing is so inconsistent. Not only do we not have any idea at the weight and pressure you are pulling with but it appeared to me you could’ve pulled that tamko off without the tamko reps help. We need to do better then this for home owners who are researching products, and looking for accurate information to inform them on their next purchase.

I wasn't pretending to achieve what the testing laboratories are designed to do. And the fact is that Titan's rating exceeds Duration's rating on wind and hail resistance. Hard to dispute! I simply had put my hands on both shingles to get the feelings. My senses made me feel okay about Tamko Titan. After that test I didn't deviate from Owen's Corning as my preferred product. But last year after several major storms when OC cannot supply our market with enough product I have to consider other brands. I heard good feedbacks from those who use Titan. All shingles manufacturers had the budget products. I previously had my disappointment with Tamko Heritage. But on April 2nd, 2024 Tornado blow off a roof along with a roof deck and frame from a house in couple hundred feet away from a house that I installed Tamko Heritage 6 years ago. The homeowner called me to check the roof. Though I found damaged shingles, I was pleasantly surprised how tight this roof is. And this is not even Titan, just Heritage. This event resurrected my faith in Tamko. This brand is older than Owen's Corning and I feel comfortable to offer Titan as an upgrade option to my customers. Last couple notes: 1. nailing zone on Titan is wider than on Duration. This is very important for the roof decks made out of solid 1x8 wood planking, which we have a lot in Kentucky. This is another advantage of Titan. 2. As a roofer I personally installed a lot of Duration shingles. I loved the SURENAIL strip for its durability, but I hate to cut it. After few shingles the blade become dull and it reaping the strip so badly. Not happening on Titan. When I installed it I used to keep a bundle of the blades, but my Spanish speaking fellas normally didn't. The same with the nailing zone - what can be easier than to see where to place a nail on the DURATION shingles?! If you have supervisor on a job and quality control you know that without control the nails are not placed in a nailing zone. So extra inch on Titan shingles makes a difference. I hope my feedbacks will help to both the homeowners and the contractors.
