I moved to the south recently and was surprised by all the metal roofs. I would think they would transfer heat into the structure, but I don't know. For that reason I would vote for putting battons between the metal and the sheathing. But again, I'm just guessing.

The metal roofing (at least with higher quality manufacturers) have a coating that reflects the vast majority of heat. Which is why the snow melts off during the winter, only requires a little solar energy to do the job.

Tim Barry I think metal roofs are a little better in hot climates. Here in south Texas, they're fairly common (asphalt shingles are still the most common though), and they last a longer than shingles; at least, the shingles that get installed on mobile homes. We install perlins because 1/2" decking is just not enough bite for the screws, and, in light of a comment I saw here, we've recently changed to the XLM screws; a more expensive but much better design than the other ones. 99.9% of our roofing is on mobile homes and their additions, where you'll run into every type of frame and attic space there is, so I can't speak for how well it actually works on normal houses.

The reason the screws back out is because there screwed directly to the osb instead of 1/4 slats. It’s much harder to pull a screw out of a 1/4 compared to osb. So you definitely need to install 1/4’s

A few things I'd add to your video. First, metal roofs are far superior to shingle roofs if you live in wetter regions. In the south, it rains alot after hot and humid days and the change in temperature can cause shingles to heat and contract and lose their granules. Until you've gone through a shingle warranty (scam) replacement, a "30 year shingle roof" doesn't mean if it doesn't last for 30 years, you get a new one. They'll depreciate it a good bit. I've had customers get a tenth of the cost back after having the roof for 10 years. Call around with metal roof prices. I paid $140 a square more for standing seam and that is worth it in the long run. Lastly, if you have a roofer that is going to put strips, make sure he puts a grid because simply laying strips across paralleling the ridge line will cause air pockets. I go straight to decking per metal paint warranty specs.

The change came with fiberglass they had to increase the amount of limestone in the asphalt to bound to the fiberglass. Asphalt is what holds everything tougher! The Mfg. has a saying. I keep seeing in the comments section "...if installed properly". I know what that means. But I'm asking, " WHAT IN THE HECK DOES THAT MEAN?!?!?!" This day in age, with disreputable contractors (VERY COMMON-almost epidemic, actually), the FACT that there is RARELY ever standardization in the training of home construction tradesmen (not from the individual contractors, to the larger firms, to the manufacturers whose products they use in their craft, etc.) Just because the final structure looks nice DOES NOT mean it is! Many times there's TONS of cover-ups. THEN, finally, when things go awry for the homeowner (who is generally the real victim here) everyone else stands around pointing the finger at everyone else. "...If installed properly", ...indeed. Turns my stomach that you'd even have to preface/add that. Thought we were all MEN, here...at least, that is, I always thought you had to be honest, to do the highest quality workmanship, to work an honest day for an honest dollar (for starters) to even be considered a man. Sad to see the effeminization that's gone on... ):

Products are always changing trade practices are changing warranties are prorated don’t cover the homeowner. So if somebody is telling you something is too good to be true it probably is too good to be true. For a while there they believe in making your house so tight now you got whole development rotting inside out. A lot of these things or even city code. So trade practices change really what you need is need somebody that has years and years of experience to know what does work and what does it.. Unfortunately that means that’s gonna cost A homeowner more money. A homeowner always wants the cheapest bid but the best quality. Rarely that will ever play out. Homeowners like to pay more for material but less for a contractor just the way it is. My suggestion as a contractor has to spend less money on material/ use your savings app material to get better contractors be that electricians plumbers and so on. The blame is not always on the contractor.

@@Mike-ug8yc, true. Pretty much the only thing we do as standard in FL that makes sense is concrete block construction. What I noticed was that when you step in between those slats, it's very weak and bends when you step in the non supported sections. Also noticed that the air space left from the 3/4 material left a runway for mice and hornets... Filled to the brim with mouse turds and urine...

I'm a traditional metal roofer with 25 years experience. Also my father before me was a metal roofer. Metal roofs are traditionally a "fully supported" roofing system and should (unless being fixed to a metal substructure) always be sitting directly onto your plywood or osb. However there are rules depending on whether the roof is a cold or warm roof. On a cold roof, battens (strapping) are used to create an airflow gap between rafters and the underside of the plywood carrying the metal roof. In a warm roof you would typically sheet the roof as normal, then apply a vapour barrier, then insulation which is generally bonded to ply or osb to support the metal directly. Although there are slight variations in different areas due to climate differences, this is the general rule for most temperate climates

You forgot to take into consideration the climate. Asphalt shingles melt in Phoenix. You can not walk on them anytime the temp is over 100. I'm an A/C contractor, I have to walk on the roof when it is so hot the shingles melt under my feet. Clay or concrete tiles work well but they crack and I have never seen a clay or concrete roof that didn't leak severely after 15 or 20 years. Only metal roofing holds up to our intense temperature and severe monsoon storms. Once installed properly, they never leak and they last a lifetime. The manufacturers all recommend metal panels be elevated to prevent condensation and eventual mold on the deck or rust through of the panel. That should settle the debate. My metal roof is 10 years old and not one screw have backed out or broken from the expansion and contraction. You must use a quality fastener.

I installed a white metal roof over 1x4's and Rhino Roof material. The main reason for this is hail storms, shingles get destroyed by hail but metal can take it. A neighbor has had his metal roof for 37 years with no leaks or hail damage and improves the insulation value in the summer by not being a dark color. In the future, roofs will be 3D printed so this won't be a question in 10 years. I'll take a ventilated graphene or carbon fiber 3D printed roof in white...please.

3 tab shingles are crap and should only be installed on sheds, as far as putting barn tin on a house I personally won’t do that. I specialize in standing seam double lock roofs of all types and we use high temp ice and water shield underneath. Sure the cost is higher but when properly explained to homeowners especially when they’re young and expect to stay there for a long time, more often than not they chose the standing seam roofs. I'm in Australia. So different climate and building codes. The vast majority of the roofs here are colourbond (metal), with some tile roofs. I have never installed or dealt with shingles. When I do colourbond I install the truss/rafters, wrap them in sarking (usually proctor wrap), then batten with mgp12 or hardwood, then lay the sheets. Having the gap between the roof sheet and sarking gives somewhere for the condensation to go. In theory the roof sheet would condensate, and the condensation would either run down the bottom of your sheet to the gutter, or drip onto the sarking and run too the gutter.

I have installed quite a few metal roofs for remodels. We have always used furring strips and I would like to point some things out. We always install a treated board at the eave of the roof as an extra precaution in case water is driven up under the metal. The reason we run purlins is due to the fact that I have seen the screws being used to fasten the metal pull out of the roof sheathing fairly easy (stripping out); so we make sure that we screw the purlins down to the trusses and then attach the metal so it has a secure hold. I also recommend choosing 26 ga. Metal opposed to 29 ga. It has less chance of being damaged during install as well as holding up in bad weather. In regards to the screws and their washers, for a little extra money they sell what’s called an “XLM” screw. These have an attached collar that covers the washer completely and if installed correctly has an awesome seal on it which we install on all our roofs.

Some of my dislikes about metal are that the screw do back out over time, Their slick to walk on if you need to come back and do a repair, A lot of installers of metal are DIYers, good ole boys and carpenters that have no conception about roofing. Color fading would be the other biggie to me and they do fade. Exposed gaskets do go bad and for goodness sakes never screw a metal roof right into a shingled roof. Always use 1x4's for a solid bite when you drive the screw in.

I live in a rural area. That means that ALL access to internet comes in via wireless cell tower access. Metal panels and wireless cell signals do not seem to get along very well. Neighbors near me who have gone with metal for it's longevity and low maintenance, have suffered a loss of 30% to 60% of their available signal strength due to metal roofs "bouncing" the signal. The only solution seems to be to relocate and elevate your cell signal antenna at least 20 to 30 feet from the metal roof, and elevate the antenna another 10 to 20 feet above the metal panels. Just thought I would pass this information along...
@davidbrewer7937
@davidbrewer7937 5 жыл бұрын
This is a very likely scenario. The steel acts as a reflector causing echoes to the antenna & data errors meaning the data packets must be reported as CRC error & resent. It causes delays. We rebuilt our home with a steel roof screwed to batons & Xplornet was unreliable on the steel. It was over to the shingle roofed barn at the back of the house & the problems cleared up but Xplornet still sucks anyway. We have since abandoned Xplornet as expensive, slow & unreliable. We had a cellular antenna installed on the soffit edge of the steel roof building & there are no problems. The steel roof does shed snow but with snow guard rails it gets broken up before damaging the eavestrough. Personally I do not want 6 feet of snow accumulating on my roof to collapse it thanks so this is a positive not a negative. The paint alone has a 35 year warranty meaning I will be 89 when the warranty runs out!...in that time I would have replaced a shingle roof at least twice, possibly three times. Steel is the best as far as I am concerned....well worth the expense

Low rib standing seam metal like horizon loc is absolutely the best thing you can put on your roof if installed properly. It can literally last as long as you live. Shingles will definitely not. There are no clips for this panel. The screws are installed on the inside female side of the panel left barely snugged in a slotted hole but not tight to accommodate expansion and contraction. The tar paper/underlayment is vital to be a properly sealed sub-barrier. Just as is needed for shingles. Then you wrap a reflective wrap (like bubble wrap with foil) in opposing directions on roof which reflects heat thereby protecting plywood, tar paper, home thermal protection and adds extra condensation protection. Then yes you use Ice guard and gutters, snow or ice is never a problem. If you have gutters and a steep roof then you should have gutter covers to keep clean and should not be climbing on a roof unless knowledgeable about roofs anyways. Whether you have shingles or metal. Yes the metal cost more but it’s one and done. Shingles are constant re-roof and weaker to storm damage etc. There is really no comparison.

Yea dont use atlas, sorry they are the cheapest shingle on the market, they have done some great stuff trying to hey into the market with the major brands like certainteed and gaf, I wouldn't out Owen's Corning on my dog house, they left a customer of mine high and dry one time with discoloration and we hadn't even got on 3/4 of the roof at the time when we notice it, I oay for it out of my pocket, I was at that time spending around 4 million a year on Owen's Corning and never used them again sense, I think that was around 25 years ago, I e been doing roofing for close to 40 years, certainteed has been the best shingle that i e found offer my customers, i don't install any others for several reasons even though they are the most expensive shingles. They do have a great product but the biggest reason is they, for me, have always stood behind their warranty. We install all our roofs to manufacture specs so the warranty is valid by the codes they set, also being a certified installer gives the customer a better warranty and registers they roof with the manufacturer, nice feature, i always use synthetic underlayment, paper OS to hot and bleed down the roof over time. I just am not comfortable selling a product that doesn't stand behind there own products or have to jump through alot of hoops to hey them to do what they promise and thays what i e found to be the case with certainteed, gaf has to many granules that fall off from the first time you open the package, I've never liked that, ibe had roofs that were down right dangerous because of so many granules that come off the shingles while installing, plus they want you to pay for there programs, no thanks, certainteed offers them free to insure they're shingles are being installed properly free of charge. 40years, hands on every shingle know for the most part, i use what i know from experience to offer customers what i would use, metal of course is the best roof you can get, it can last you if maintained 200 years no problem, i have houses that have the original galvanized roofs on them and they are over a 100 years old so yes exsoensibe but will out last even the youngest person if installed properly. One of my biggest selling points is decking, a product is no better than what it's attached to, so making sure the customer has good decking not just when you look at it but that is going to last the life of these lifetime heavy shingles is very important, ibe seen these companies come out and do a one day job and the decking in a month or so is sticking up through the shingles cause they didnt de-nail the deck off, nails dont hold for ever, especially when you walk all over them, it works them lose and most times your replacing the roof so the decking has already been there for 20 or more years, hooe so of this insight helps someone, thanks for video

Thanks for the products data & lifespan, My desire would be for you to include Architectural defined appearances with the products you discuss. Such as, Metal roofing is well suited for Contemporary styles. Composition roofing is architecturally suitable for current pitched roof styles ... Esthetic should be discussed in your review of roofing products.

Another thought I had was damage from hail. I would think the metal would get dented and look terrible, whereas with the three dimensional shingles they would 'soak up' the impact and no damage.

In my area, there’s a lot of hail. After a damaging hail storm, the roofs in that neighborhood are replaced on insurance claims. If you look at the downspouts, you’ll see piles of aggregate. Once that protective layer is hammered off from the hail, the exposed shingle breaks down quickly.

the one thing that no one does is ice and water shield the whole roof. i did, every nail on my iko roof is sealed for life. But, if the roof does have an issue, i would put plastic roof shingles so it would last forever.

Vented. So the plywood can dry quickly due to naturally occurring condensation.

I think that ~1/4 inch thick plastic mesh mat layer is maybe a better option. It goes between the waterproof underlayment and the metal roof panels. It allows water to drain and there is enough airflow to allow drying. You can also walk on it normally since the roof is consistently supported. It also doesn't have a large enough gap to allow critters to make a home. It seems like the best of both worlds.

There is a different version of "standing seam metal roof" that doesn't have the extreme costs of the traditional standing seam metal roof systems. I've installed asphalt shingle roofs, ag style metal roofs and the different version of standing seam metal roofs. The metal roofing that I used only cost about 20% more than asphalt shingles. Some of this 20% product cost increase was offset by income tax return rebates. I don't know if the income tax rebates still exist since the new tax code has been introduced. The only real extra labor costs for us was the fact that valleys take more time to complete. I'd always recommend a metal roof over any asphalt shingles. I do agree that snow guards need to be included wherever pedestrian walkways or driveways are below the roof line. Proper gutter installation is important to keep them from being ripped off.

I highly recommend sheet metal. Roof the longest you screw it on top new plywood.. and set the screw in the flat. Not on top of the rib use a impact drill so you can control how tide you. Want it" we use a C metal channel and screw it tru plywood into the trusses with a 3 inch deck screws and then screw sheet metal on it. Never had problems with. Talk to your cell phone company if you loose crevice they 'll install a antenna and you get full bars.

Um you use 2x4 to raise it up not 3/4. Quit being cheap and do it the right way. And it needs the air flow thats why they have foam strips for the bottom and foam strips for the ridge cap.

I agree with the Shingle option. I install metal and shingle. With the metal the snow comes off and rolls to the house. Even with break points. Shingles it’s easy to replace and fix any leaks

No, it's really not unless it's installed like a barn/carport/etc where the metal is attached directly to trusses. If you have underlayment, sheathing, insulation, and ceiling drywall in between the metal roof and the interior of the house then you don't really hear the difference.

Using purlins on top of rafters or the existing roof deck is ridiculous. Standing seam panels are fastened right to the roof deck. Corrugated metal that is screwed down is not a good product. Most metal roofs are plagued with problems especially in snowy regions of the country. If I were going to go that route I would try to rhino line the entire panel to give it grip and allow the snow to fall off of it more slowly. Traditional roofing systems are still the best. Slate, or tile. Flat lock copper or double lock standing seam. 9 out of ten times I would recommend slate roofing for anything more than a 3/12 roof. Hundred year product if done right and properly maintained.

I like to have metal roof over cow barn, and architectural asphalt shingles roof over my house 😊. Asphalt shingles are extremely flexible and easy to work with.

Spot on with this. Installed all three types for over 20 years. Bang for the buck for the arch shingles can’t be beat. Exposed fastener roofs have a lot limitations on complicated roof systems.
