I like that hammer, I always used that for 20 years , the first guy that I worked for was a French guy that called my hammer a Yankee slugger! It’s a California framer although I’m from NY I just like the balance of the hammer and the wooden handle, I also use al the traditional slate hammers with nail hole puncher and slate anvil!

I have torn off 20 or more very old and non salvageable slate roofs in my lifetime and not one of them were ever nailed on with copper nails, hot dipped galvanized nails are perfectly fine to install slate and will never fail.

Should always use slaters latts! Your nailing straight through felt. Defeats yhe object in my opinion.

No cleats ? Face nailing that copper to the roof deck will not allow the metal to expand or contract with the seasons. If cost is an issue just buy a small sheet of copper and make your own cleats. Face nailing can cause the paint can effect similar to what happens when you overdrive fasteners when installing aluminum fascia wrap and vinyl or steel siding.

typically the valley has a bend on each side and you clip and nail it in. I mean either way it won't leak. but expansion it's why it's clipped rather then nailed. I usually try and nail slates out of the valley

You should go to slate school because your install is flawed big time. Your starting course is to short. That second course only covers overlap by one inch from what I see over starter. All slate should have a 3" headlap. Try reading the Slate Roof Bible by Joe Jenkins. Looks like your taking all the short cuts the cheap guys do. You also have no 3/8" edge starter at the bottom under the starter to keep the second course from having gap at overlap of first course. I have been roofing for 45 years and you are no slate roofer.

Thanks for watching the video ! This was a fun roofing project. There was a lot of interesting transitions that made this slate roof look awesome. It is called Mckinnely Blend, from American slate . Vermont slate is another good slate company that ships it tile anywhere We used all copper nails and flashing . Look for the video of the time lapse of the garage roof. There is also a video to show the installation of the chimney flashing. Cheers!

Yes Larry, the 2nd row of slate on the 3rd over lap only had a minimum head lap. but that was the only row. with the slate tile rep there, it was approved all copper everything nails etc etc very expensive. we did not cut any corners , in fact we did every thing above and beyond specs. how would you have avoided the short course in the second row. ? we only had 8 inch and 10 inch wide pieces to work with . we could only choose from these to pieces for the starter pieces. the 10 inch piece kick the slate up a bit and it did not look smooth. but bumpy, and made a permanent gap in each row there after so we choose to use the 8 inch piece to set up the starter piece. over all roof looks very smooth. That was the only slate row on the whole roof that had a minimum expose on the 3rd piece only. the tile was approx 16 inches long with a 6 inch exposure. this roof over all has a fantastic exposure. we actually had the rep from american tile come out to our job to show us the lay out for this roof. we actually had 3 pieces over lap at every point on the roof with proper exposure except the second row. good thing we install peel-n-stick on there edge of the roof line and rubber modified roofing material over every where else. I will try to look up the slate roof bible by Joe Jenkins for some more tips on slate roofing . thanks for the tip there are a lot of different ways to install this roof. this was the easiest way i thought to show the viewers This job looks amazing over minus the 2nd row which had the only short 3rd layer on the roof thanks for pointing out the short 2nd row. oh Ya we actually had a 3/4 inch rise built into the copper edge metal to answer that 3/8 edge starter cheers

True American Roofing- The Official Page You might have three slates overlapping as you’ve stated, but this head lap should be four inches especially at the roof pitch you have. Wind driven rain will get in there simple.

The valley is totally water proof and will last the test of time. with a 3 layered valley base underlayment with the peel-n-stick, and TU 35 modified base paper and torch down installed under neath this copper valley. this valley is good to go for ever. we nailed the valley off with copper nails. only 2 seasons in california summer and summer time . expansion and contraction in roofing go hand and fist. but you cannot be afraid to nail some thing off if you need too. when installing any type of counter flashing into the roofing surface or deck typically a nail will be somewhere close to follow . again expansion and contraction we still have to nail it in regardless of this effect. it just does not stay in place by itself. clipping the valley would be interesting to view post a video to show us how you would do it that way. kelsey & larry & Tony I will be looking for your videos on how to install anything that has to do with a slate roof in the future. Good luck Cheers !

I think their alot of smoking going onn. I know specs are different . You should have the DUBY brothers. its got like three underlayment on the roof already. I thinks he confused between slate and spanish tile . All installed backwards

So if the Slate rep told you it was OK to only have 1" headlap on first course how come you installed the copper valley's with 12 " overlap. If there was a slate rep out there which is very unlikely likely he never would have ok d that. Same with the valley being installed over the Slate under course . READ THE SLATE BOOK. Your guy's don't know how to layout slate plain and simple. Larry Crookshanks

This roof was really unusual with the different roofing transitions that connected in various areas. no there was more than just 1 inch of a head lap on the first row of tile. the slate starter pieces were 8 inches wide. we set rows with a 5 inch exposure. it was more than just 1 inch. hey did you see how we installed the chimney flashing on that same slate job next slate roof. i will all read the slate book .and actually have it on the job. the 1st row of slate was fun. what do use for the starter. if you set slate piece vertical it kicked the 2nd row up and looked like @#$%. slate rep from american slate told gave us this variation choice. Larry how would you have install those 1st couple of rows. what type of head lap do you typically use for each slate row. let the you tubers know the rest of the roof was played out perfectly. let me know when you post your video so i can check it out cheers

Length of slate subtract 3" then divide by 2 gives you your correct exposure also the drip edge I use has a 3/8s bump to serve for a cant strip with a return to be cleared down never nail through your copper flashing never cut slate with a grinder use a slate cutter and for example on what size starter say the slate is 16 inches tall you will a 6.5 inch exposure and a 9.5" starter or just use a 10 after you put first course on you need to find true ridge with 2 squares mark down the size of your ridge slate or copper cap then mark up 3 inches for correct layout pop line then adjust you should end with same size ridge course as your starter course you want same exposure just a few pointers dude you really shouldn't have video recorded tht it's a discrace to us true slators!!

Please read the Slate Bible or the National Slate Association's Standards and Installation manual before installing another slate roof. You're giving slate a bad name. The layout is incorrect, the valley is installed incorrectly, the laps are off, etc, etc, etc. You're wasting the materials!!!!
