Been in roofing for 14 years. Storm chaser sales rep for 4 years. Owned a roofing company with my brother until 2013- 2022…..Don’t mix family and business. Now doing it all on my own. A lot more hats but technology and your videos really help me navigate this first year

My father started the company in 1989, now he's retired and I tookover the reigns. The very worst part is hiring sales reps. You go through so many sales reps just to get 1 good one. Selling roofs isnt like selling cars or vacuums, you actually need to learn how to be a roofer and almost an adjuster to be successful. The stage of teaching proper installation (they have to be able to explain it to the homeowner) and how the entire claims process works is where people fail all the time. It's just too difficult for most or too much to handle. There's a reason why you get 50%; it's hard work. Also, finding the rights subs. Not just roofing crews, but the gutter guys, painters, carpenters, siders, etc because as the roofer for an insurance claim, you're basically an acting general contractor that also does the roof. Any interior leak, water mitigation, gutters, siding, anything on the claim, you are expected to do for the homeowner. And even if the roof is perfect, if the sub messes up, then that's on you, even if you didnt do that work and subbed it out.

This video is spot on! The ups and downs are very accurate. I can relive all of them like it was yesterday lol. I know a lot of homeowners watch your videos so it's great for them to get a little insight into what contractors go through, good and bad.

I'm 40 yrs old, started my roofing company when I was 20... What makes roofing so difficult is the amount of risk that is involved. That's why insurance costs are substantially higher than other industries. What other industry has exposures to building dept regulations and inspections, OSHA, workers comp, dept of labor, with each project consisting of multiple manufacturers, distributors, subcontractors, employees, mother nature, hundreds of tasks per job, a customer overseeing every step of the process at their home, a lamen customer with varying personalities and expectations holding you to the highest degree of accountability with the ability of destroying your reputation in an instant. What other business does the owner risk going to prison for workers comp fraud or insurance fraud for sometimes a technicality beyond your control? I would highly suggest against starting a roofing business as it is no more than a very expensive education. My recommendation to someone in the industry is stick to selling for a roofing company, build your network, and invest your commissions in real estate.

I agree with advice. That’s kinda where I’m at . I’m doing good in sales, thinking of doing my own but at the same time. I’m better off saving and investing into other things. I bought an atm company through my commissions and that’s helped me out alot.

Me and a couple buddies have been talking about branching off to start our own company. We all do anywhere from 1-2M in sales each year and see how much money we could be making. It's such a tough call, sometimes it feels like the right move, but then I see comments like these that tells me that there is so much other BS that I am just not aware of as a Project Manager. My father was a plumbing contractor for 36 years and he always urges me to branch off and try my hand at starting a business. He says I'll never know if I don't try, and if it doesn't end up working out, at least I can say I tried.

Definitely ego, trucks and equipment and the need to have the best of everything was my demons. Learned the hard way. Learn to grow and buy equipment accordingly. Not as a spur of the moment thought.

I'm just now starting my roofing business at 30 years old. I am a first generation business owner in my Family and am starting this in Los Angeles area. I have worked as a sales person and a super intendent for a roofing company for a long time. What are some key points, tips, to help prevent racking up a big workers comp audit bill? How do you prepare yourself to stay profitable and not put yourself out of business with just the "first workers comp audit" or "taxes"? I never thought about this and concerns me going into business.

Great Video. This is my 3rd year into my own General Contracting/Roofing business after being a sub for 14 years. My biggest struggle right now is that I am still running the whole business by myself, but I did finally hire 1 full-time technician. I definitely need to hire some admin help and some sales/PM help, but my biggest hang up is that I can't find an office/warehouse space that fits my budget. Commercial lease rates are astronomical now after the pandemic. What are your thoughts about running a roofing business out of a home office/garage vs an actual office/warehouse space? With all my trailers/equipment I definitely need a warehouse and I'd like to have an office for my future hires, but unless I want to spend $5k/month, it's extremely slim-pickins.

I started with $2000. Do as much as you can for free (Facebook is free, KZbin is free) learn how to throw your name on the internet at no cost. Check MyMarketingFitness.com: I teach daily what I would do today if I started a roofing company. 10 minutes a day goes a long way!
