Rack that I am using in this video: amzn.to/3uMGnQa FYI: This has been a great rack for the price. Very durable. The 3 crossbars are very wide and the stock mounting brackets that come with the tent do not fit, I had to make some of my own to mount the tent. I did so by cutting some steel straps and drilling holes and adding weather stripping to the underside. It worked great, just a little extra step if you plan to run this rack. Thanks for watching!

Sam, I appreciate your video. I am in this major researching mode as I just bought a Jeep and want to start creating memories with my family (4 total people). I originally thought Ikamper but am now leaning towards Roofnest Falcon XL or the Condor. Now I'm trying to figure it out via reviews. Yours helped. Any other tips or advice is welcome. Ps. I live in Bozeman Montana to help the climates I will be camping in. Mostly spring and summer camping with some fall hunts mixed in. Thanks Sam and thanks for being real and not fake with your review.

Great video. Clear and concise. Hope Roofnest compensates you with some perks. And at 36yrs old you are not anywhere close to being a “senior”citizen. I’m 70 and even though I get the 10% senior discounts at some stores/restaurants, I don’t see myself as a senior citizen. You’re as old as you act. So I suppose I’m 25!🤣🤣🤣. Seriously, keep camping, introducing your kids to the outdoors, spending quality time and teaching them skills they’ll be able to use when they get to be your “senior “ citizen age. Awesome job. Rock on!

Thanks for the review. I live in Arizona and do a lot of back road hunting and camping. I would rather use one of these over a tent, but then I'd have to take it down every morning when I go off to hunt. Not sure the extra work each time would be worth it, but again, thanks for the review.
@SamBischof
@SamBischof 3 жыл бұрын
The roof top tents are definitely convenient. But I agree if you move around a lot during the day, it can be a pain. Two solutions: get a side by side or pull a small overland trailer and put the tent on that. Detach the trailer during the day and you’re setup and ready to explore. Thanks for watching!

Yeah that would work great! So far I haven’t had any issue just rolling it up out of the way. I kinda like that I can see better out the window when the awning is rolled up. Thanks for the video. Been looking for the best tent that suits us and this helped. I hesitate a lot on this tent as I know velcro wears out and is not strong, especially in the wind. Sure at first it does but them straps, especially the cheep hold down system is not good, Should have buckles and if I were you, I would be getting ready to install some soon. No where do I see what the material is, Is it ripstop and how heavy. Other than that, the tent looks good.

Thanks. Few questions: Why remove the shoe bags prior to folding up? Can they not stay? What would you do different when setting up (and breaking down) in a driving rain? Could you not do all the awnings from inside the tent? When opening the shell, how long is the period of time the underside of the mattress (at fold) is exposed to rain? How long for the mattress entry edge? (How wet might it get?
@SamBischof
@SamBischof 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Ralf! Thanks for the questions! The shoe bags stay on full time now! I don't know why I was taking them on and off. I leave them on and everything closes just fine. The awnings can definitely be done from inside the tent, I did it last night in fact. It wasn't raining, but I didn't feel like climbing down to do it. If you are anticipating rain, I would suggest keeping the doors and windows zipped shut when closing it down. That way when you reopen in the rain there will be no way to get the mattress wet. There is no benefit to leaving them open while the tent is closed, You don't get any airflow in there with the hard shell down. I deployed mine in the rain recently just like this, and climbed in to a perfectly dry mattress. Hope that helps!

I have had mine for a couple of years and never had an issue until last night. I swear the wind picked up and was gusting 60-70 mph out of complete no where. The zipper on the fly came u done leaving me to holding onto it for dear life for 20 minutes u til I could fully detach it. I notice there is a zipper on the bottom of the fly came what is that for? I put in the locks for the struts and that held up fine. However, disappointed with how the fly cover came undone.

@SamBischof
@SamBischof 2 жыл бұрын
I have camped in the rain and the snow in this tent. I have never heard of pooling water and never had an issue with that. You can definitely keep a condensation mat and some thin bedding. There's not a lot of storage while closed. A few items that squish flat wouldn't be an issue. As for closing it, that all depends on the height of your vehicle and your climbing ability! They do provide a nice strap to pull the lid down that a shorty would have no problem reaching :)

Hi Sam, what type of solar panel would fit in the weird indentation on the top of the roof? I see there are some loops to tie a solar panel to, but unless they are zip ties or something similar, it seems it would be hard to tie something into that space. Any idea what the manufacturer had in mind for that indentation?
@SamBischof
@SamBischof 3 жыл бұрын
From what I understand that indentation was made for storage with the tie downs. Fitting a solar panel in that spot wouldn’t make much sense as you’d have to always park in a way to face the sun when the shell is open. I think you’d be better off with a flexible solar panel you can lay out in any orientation when you’re parked. So far I’ve found no real need for that spot up top. Thanks for watching!

Hi Sam, thanks for the great video coverage on this INCLUDING the commentary on withstanding inclimate weather; invaluable content there! Was curious... what are your thoughts on the Falcon XL for couples camping sans kids?
@SamBischof
@SamBischof 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jack! Thanks for watching! I think if it were just my wife and I, we would do the Falcon XL as well. The slim profile is really nice and I really like the wedge form factor. The falcon XL and Condor XL weigh the exact same. It comes down to how much room you want. The condor XL is really nice for only two people because you have all the extra room. I think you get better views though with the wedge tents. Hope that helps!

Will the XL fit on a short bed Tacoma tucked behind the cab on a mid rise rack? Without going past the tailgate?

Yes it should if it’s a 5.5’ bed. Same size as mine in length I believe.

I wish many of these tents would have a small fan (thinking BunduTec tents) - any problems with condensation?

Like any well sealed tent, there are condensation issues. But they can be managed by cracking windows at night and getting a little airflow. Thanks for watching!

I'm kinda bummed. Just got my condor xl in and my darn LED light strips don't work. I used 3 different battery packs to make sure that wasn't the issue but still doesn't work. The little power light on the controller turns on for about 10 seconds then turns off by itself for some reason. I called roofnest to see if they can help me out. It's a brand new tent so we'll see...

That’s a bummer dude! Sorry to hear that. Roofnest should be able to help you out. I have had a couple issues with something similar with my connection being to loose. Not sure if that USB plug is just slighting bigger. If you hold the plug in place can you get the LEDs to turn on at all?

Thanks! I'm pretty close to a decision to get this for me and my two big kids for our Mitsubishi Outlander. This was helpful! Can you leave sleeping bags and pillows in the tent when you're closing it?
@SamBischof
@SamBischof 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Dena! You can leave some bedding in, but it depends on how thick it is. I wouldn't recommend trying to push it, but once you get the tent you can test how it closes with different items in there to see what works. Just don't force it closed. I've seen some people take out the mattress and do an exped inflatable mattress, if you do that you can get away with fitting more bedding in as long as the mattress is deflated. Hope that helps!

Funny no one talks about wind noise. I have had some miserable night sleeps due to wind noise on my RTT. I feel it is much louder than a ground tent due to its height.
@SamBischof
@SamBischof 3 жыл бұрын
I can't remember if I mentioned wind noise in this video or my other, but I don't notice any significant increase in wind noise compared to a ground tent. That being said, I sleep like crap if it's windy at night in either one. Thanks for watching Phillip!

what ladder rack is that on the truck? looking at this same setup for my f150. i like how your rack has 3 support frames instead of two like most thule/yakima have

The rack I’m using is by Hooke Road. Just as a heads up I did have to make custom mounting brackets for the tent because the cross pieces were too wide for the ones that come with the tent. Thanks for watching!

Would this fit on a Jeep Grand Cherokee? I like the size of the XL and think it could work with a Chief Products or Front Runner Rack setup (I think crossbars would work, but I would like some more security.

As long as you have perpendicular (to your vehicle) mounting bars that can support the weight, you should have no problem. I’ve seen them mounted on Teslas before. Thanks for watching!

Question for you - The website says this tent is 74 inches wide. In the vid it looks like it's barely as wide as your truck bed length of 5.5 feet. Can you clarify the dimensions?
@SamBischof
@SamBischof 2 жыл бұрын
The dimensions on the site are correct. Width of my truck bed is different than length. Remember the tent folds out too. So that’s probably the measurement you’re referencing. Thanks for watching!

Quick question... how hard is it to install and uninstall the tent because when it's not camping season I don't wanna be driving around with it everyday. I also have a 4Runner and does affect the vehicles center of gravity while driving? Anyone has experience?
@SamBischof
@SamBischof 2 жыл бұрын
The tents are big enough that I usually use 3 people to take it off and on. It can be lifted by two people but it’s an awkward shape. There are lots of pulley system setups out there that can help you do it solo. It’s only 160 lbs so it doesn’t take a big toll on your center of gravity. I leave mine on all year. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the video. My wife and I have a 4 year old and a 7 year old. After watching your video my wife was much more comfortable about us getting a RTT. I have the same truck as you however I have the Leitner Forged rack system. Im curious to know how tall the Condor is closed? The specs say 13 inches, is this accurate?? I'm trying to get accurate measurements to make sure it will fit inside my garage. Cheers!

Thanks for the review! Super helpful! Quick question tho... You mentioned staying in the roof nest during cold weather. How you do feel the tent holds up for cold weather camping? Did you feel using the tent with a rated sleeping bag provided you adequate warmth?
@SamBischof
@SamBischof 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Carrie! Thanks for watching! To answer you question the tent did great. But it is a tent. So even in the cold it’s still cold and doesn’t provide much extra insulation over a regular tent. So like you said it comes down to your bag or bed roll and clothing. I camped recently in temps that got down to the low teens at night. I have a 20° bag and then I layered my clothing and I slept comfortable. Down is your best friend for staying super warm. Condensation can be an issue at temps that cold so be sure to leave the windows cracked. I was warm but I woke up with ice on my mustache and beard haha! Hope that helps.

If you check out the Roofnest short film on my channel I filmed that in 13 degree weather with snow and sleet that night. The tent held up great. Same with rain. No issues. The only thing I run into is condensation on the inside because it keeps the heat in pretty well. So I always crack windows at night to keep the airflow moving. Thanks for watching!

Great video Sam (as well as the other on the comparison). Would you mind sharing what bed rack you have in the video? I drive a 2021 Frontier 4x4 with a six foot bed that has the factory Utili Track system installed and the rails are about an inch below the side rails. Could you recommend a manufacturer that would provide a rack supporting this configuration? I'd like the same setup you have in the videos, basically inline with my cab height and nothing over the tailgate.

Thanks for watching! The bed rack that I have now (in this video) is by a brand called Hooke Road. It's been a great rack so far, zero complaints. I'm an ambassador for CBI Offroad, so I do have a CBI bed rack on the way and will be switching it out when it arrives. The Hooke Road rack mounts through my bed rail system on the Tundra, so if they have one for your Frontier, I would assume it would as well.

Sam...are you Not worried...that the Roofnest does not have locks to Secure the Tent?.( only Straps/velcro...doesn't 'sound' SECURE..)...other then that Great ''LED Light Feature..( Indoor & Outdoor ).!! Is the Stock Mattress Comfortable for 'Side sleepers' as well? ( i can't sleep On My Back..). ..So ..what about 'COST'? Cheaper than the 'Competitor'?...Will they 'Fit' on A 4 Runner..or other SUV'S?..... Cheers From Canada..
@SamBischof
@SamBischof 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question! Not having locks doesn’t bother me. It would take a lot of work to unbolt the tent and I’m not worried about anyone opening it to tamper with it. I do keep it garage parked though. Locks could easily be added. We love the mattress! It sleeps firm obviously because it’s only a few inches thick, but I’m a side / stomach sleeper and I do well on the mattress. Roofnest comes in the mid range for pricing. There are cheaper tents and there are more expensive tents. Your most likely need a custom roof rack but it will totally fit on a 4 runner! Thanks for watching!

I would appreciate your thoughts whether or not you think this would be difficult or easy for 2 people (5"5 & 5"9) to deploy and put away higher up than your truck situation (on top of my SUV).

I can tell you from personal experience that it is not easy or super fun with two people. I just did it on my truck and scuffed up my tailgate. We were moving and I needed the bed available. 3 people makes all the difference just to have the extra set of arms to help stabilize. It’s not so much the weight as it is the awkward hand holds and shape of the tent. Hope that helps!
