'Almost nobody dances sober, unless they happen to be insane.' - H. P. Lovecraft
And we were insane, weren't we? All 243 of us. Insane with love and drunk on memories - memories of how these 4.5 years had changed us forever. Of all the marvellous people we'd met, all the glorious places we'd been, all the delightful bonds we'd formed, all the adventures we'd had and even the ones we didn't. All the vivas we flunked, all the classes we bunked, all the successful proxies (and the failed ones too). All the teachers who inspired us, all the patients who taught us, all the seniors who loved us and all the juniors we were loved by. Memories enough to last a lifetime.
We began this journey with those upsetting pangs of homesickness and here we were back to square one again - by the time we'd found someplace to call home, it was time to leave again.
'Then we should bid good-bye for a little while?'
'I suppose so.'
'And how do people perform that ceremony of parting?'
'They say, Farewell, or Sayonara, or Goodbye.'
'It seems stingy, and dry, and unfriendly, doesn't it? We feel there should be something else too: a little heartfelt addition to the rite.'
And we did add something - those who knew how to dance and especially those who did not, in the campus we'd come to cherish and with people we'd come to love.
'This is the goodbye song.
It doesn’t rhyme but at least we’re singing.
There will be silence between now
And the next time we see each other.
But I like you still, so let us keep.
It really was something and we were this.
Thank you for being you.
You’re welcome for being me.
And now I will say: goodbye. Goodbye!'
