Considering that Johns 13.16 was the second highest of the entire round of 32...to bad the first highest was Morgans 17.13, the judges scoring was not an issue for John. Crappy waves were more of the problem and Morgan is obviously accustomed to it as its his home break.

Great riding by the local boy but its a shame the world champ has to surf in marginal conditions to advance. JJF coach should have told him to avoid air moves due to low chances of scoring potential and high chances of injury in these conditions at this break.

That was a clinic. John was rattled after the first exchange, that's why he went to the air. Without perfect wave selection he knew he wouldn't be able to compete on turns, in those small waves. The confidence that local knowledge brings was definitely a factor.

JJF can compete with anyone's rail game, even in small waves. His combination of power, style and variety is unmatched, no matter how small the waves are. I can agree he may have been a little rattled, but he also got unlucky as Morgan was just on the better waves (and definitely surfed them well). In a 30 minute heat it doesn't take much to lose; a couple of mistakes and unlucky wave decisions is enough, even for the best in the world.
@shockmarkets7384
@shockmarkets7384 3 жыл бұрын
@@callumw5 You're not really giving Morgan or his coach their dues, bringing it down to luck. I like John's surfing, but he was easily matched yesterday by a man with a plan that was executed, pretty much, flawlessly. Ask John if he thought it had anything to do with luck. He'd probably refer to his equipment, and he'd be right. I don't know how he goes over his losses, but there's plenty to go over with this one. I wish him all the best.
@callumw5
@callumw5 3 жыл бұрын
@@shockmarkets7384 Morgan definitely surfed extremely well, but what I'm trying to say is that 30 minutes is a really short time and it doesn't always reflect how good or even in-form a surfer is, anything can happen in 30 minutes. Any surfer could be in the form of their life, going into a heat with everything on their side but still a couple if mistakes and miss some good waves and lose, and vice versa. I just think it's hard to judge the form or talent of a surfer on a single heat, but morgan's had another good one so its starting to look very promising.
@shockmarkets7384
@shockmarkets7384 3 жыл бұрын
@@callumw5 Yeah good on him, I haven't seen any of it today. John doesn't need defending, he's a two time world champ. That speaks for itself. He had a bad heat. It's no biggie. I wholeheartedly agree with you. In saying that though, JJF turns we’re so much more intentional, creative and precise. Aside from the first turn on the 9, Morgan kind of threw his board up and the lip knocked it back down, his cutback also caught the rail and he staggered through it. In terms of judging, the style and true performance didn’t really factor in and clumsier surfing won.

Lol the ride as a whole was incomplete. And since the points are given for the whole wave it doesnt really matter

@@coulrovedadi If that is true then why did Billy Kemper win the Peahi last year? He pulled into a lot of barrels but didn't make any complete barrels and still scored high. I'll never understand how they judge waves.

@Aquatic Mullet Yeah he did and if you anything about surfing the maneuvers that John was doing required higher skills than the easy old school moves. Plus an additional barrel ride.
