I have walked there every day for the past ten years at least. It’s really lovely, there are foxes, rabbits, hares, Guinea pigs, and I’ve even seen goats.. oh, and many many red belly blacks in the summer! Some famous graves, some very funny tomb stones inscriptions.. and it used to be the place to get sunset shots, but lately many big units/ sky rises have been constructed, so it’s not much good.. but you can still get lovely panoramic shots into the distance.

Beautiful place too Although one correction I’d just like to point out is that the photo you used for Bing Lee is actually his son Ken whose buried next to him, both were very instrumental the creation of the business but yeah just wrong face on the wrong guy

It was called Haslem Creek because that was the suburb. The superstitious locals had the town name changed to Rookwood but this only made people call the cemetery Rookwood also. The town finally changed its name to Lidcombe and Rookwood Cemetery stuck. Haslems Creek flows through the area into the low lying Parramatta River, due to the body fluid run off serpentine gutters where added and flow into water features and reeds. Correct me if i’m wrong as its been 10 years. I love the Devonport story, he travelled with his brother to do shows in late the 1800. He was a mentor to Houdini who came to visit his grave. When he saw the grave was disheveled and in the wrong religion Houdini paid to have him exhumed and interred correctly. Houdini then went on to fly a historic flight at Rosehill and went into the record books as a world record aviator! I don’t think Davenport’s wife got to visit the grave.
@cemeteriesdownunder924710 ай бұрын
Thankyou so much for some of this info , how sad for Davenport's wife , I didn't know Houdini did that that what an amazing person he was . I remember doing the Davenport story and thinking I'm standing in the exact spot that Houdini would of once stood . sadly that area is often neglected with overgrown grass , and forgive me if I don't know all the details .

Hi, I'm writing this on 5th July 2022, and we're having floods at the moment. I drive a van for work, and today was driving on Church Street, which runs between the cemetery and the train line. There's a dip in the road there, and at that point a large chunk of the cemetery is completely underwater with just the tip of the headstones poking out. That water has to be several feet deep. It's a hell of a sight. Very eerie. I was actually searching KZbin to see any footage of it when I came across this video. If you live locally, you should go take some footage of it.

I worked as a Land Surveyor for the cemetery trust in the 90's & 00's. at 5:30 you can just make out the rail corridor which came in from Lidcombe Station (formally Haslems Creek) and up through the middle of the tombs. there was also a caretakers cottage near the original gates to the right of the screen (william drive), which was later resumed by the road widening of railway street. It was an interesting job and I learnt so much about it's history & stories of some residents and characters that had lived there.
