This was perfect timing for this video. I'm currently writing a fantasy book, and I recently added in an anthropomorphic mushroom creature named Gustava. Originally she was supposed to just be for a joke (a character gets bored of a conversation and says he has to go take his pet mushroom for a walk, other characters think it's an innuendo, then they go to his home and he ACTUALLY has a pet mushroom), but this video has inspired me to actually do more with her

I really love this series, partly for the art, partly for the ideas, and partly for the fact that each one of these videos inspires me to delve further into how something could be fleshed out or made more interesting or unique, which, as an amateur writer and DM, is very valuable. Speaking of... I like the idea that the myconid telepathy, through some quirk of how it works by reading brain chemistry and hormone levels (meaning that it wouldn't work on constructs, undead, or most extraplanar creatures), is less about literal mind reading and more about being able to read the emotions and intentions of other creatures through examining physical processes. So they can tell that you are angry, but not what expletives you are shouting at them, and they can communicate their unwillingness to fight by broadcasting their calmness, or maybe their fight or flight instinct depending on the situation. With this flavor I might give the myconid some innate ability to cast Calm Emotions and Fear, but only on creatures infected with their spores. Though, that could also be very impractical, so maybe instead it just means that they always get the to-the-point meaning of what people are saying, giving them problems with euphemisms and metaphors. Not because they take them too literally, no, but for the OPPOSITE reason. If a myconid lady looking person was hit on by a human in a bar, the myconid wouldn't so much get a word for word translation of the pick up line, but just the impression of what the human's goals are. "Did it hurt when you fall from heaven" becomes "your appearance inspires reproductive urges in me and I am initiating mating rituals". Thus understanding perfectly what people are saying, but still struggling socially because they understand perhaps TOO perfectly. While this wouldn't necessarily be perfect lie detection or anything, it does cut out a lot of the fluff and various tricks people use in language to avoid questions, distract listeners, etc., and so with this interpretation I'd give the myconid advantage on insight checks against creatures infected with their spores.

Interesting ideas, I think your on a really good path for making my one's telepathy a fun element for players. Communication being non traditional can create some really interesting situations. Thanks for checking out the video and the well thought out comment.

@@Rookzer0 why not give *the slime* symbiotic myconid armor? the slime can be a protective skin layer and the myconid can share consciousness with it. or have a warforged druid wear that combination so that he can -be a real boy- have living components to his body in some semblance of flesh.

Welp, now I really wanna play a Myconid. I doubt I’d wanna take the negative of sunlight sensitivity to the point of death, but it’s still a unique class that’d make for some really good roleplay. I just would love to play some curious & silent character that just messes around with everything to see what happens and like, calls everyone by descriptors such as, “Void haired friend” and “Towering thorn-fanged friend”. I dunno it just sounds like fun.

Me & my DM always take homebrew to be simple & revolve around something that already exists to keep it balanced. My homebrew Myconid was taking the Hill Dwarf, scrapping the axe/hammer proficiency & heavy armor bonuses & replacing them with the rapport spores ability all Myconids have equal to 1/2 my proficiency score (rounded up) per long rest as well as moving movement speed & height to that of normal humanoids. I know giving up 2 features (technically 3) for just one (technically 2) seems underwhelming, but Rapport Spores can be DAMN useful if you know what you're doing & it guarantees you won't be overpowered compared to the rest of your team right at the beginning of character creation. You still have bonus health, poison resistance, advantage on poisoned saves, a fair distance in darkvision & a +2/+1 to Constitution/Wisdom so all in all you're keeping everything you would NEED to roleplay a Myconid & still have scaling in player levels. Mid to front line tank? Done. Druid or even Cleric? Done. Out of combat utility? Done.

I always had the idea of Myconids getting along with spores druids, the spores druids spread the spores of the myconids around new areas as long as they don't grow to much to fast and the myconids help newer spores druids train their powers and help the spores druids by making them armor and weapons of mushroom. I don't really care if this would be in canon in any world but it's a fun thought.
@mme.veronica7353 жыл бұрын
I think limiting your telepathy to a more cinematic experience could be very interesting if your group is up to that roleplay. Here's an example, you found an enemy to the west of your camp you might explain that through the ideas of a snarling wolf and the setting sun. It seems difficult but so evocative that I'd want to roleplay it ay least once

If someone really want's to play a fun-guy but aren't allowed to be one as just a race, then i can imagine a great old one warlock could fit the bill rather well. (yes i know spore druid exist) all of it's abilities could easily be converted to fit your needs. Awakened Mind could be you communicating through spores. Entropic ward could easily be that you shoot out a small spore cloud to give your enemy disadvatage on that attack. Thought Shield... magical spores? Create Thrall, this one is the easiest, some mushrom spores can control insects so that was easy. Now, i'm new to dnd but i'll give it a go to come up with something. The veiled lady they call her, tall, willowy, with a greenish brown hat and a nettet veil that covers her from her shoulders to her angles. She sees no one as she has no eyes, she speaks no words as she has no mouth and yet through the soil she feasts and through her spores she speaks. Long have i traveled with her and she speaks to me and only me, or so i thought as my other companions to heard her voice. Foes would often choke in her spores as she mercilessly struck back at her suffering opponent. One foe lived.. she kneeled down to him, none of us saw what she was doing but when she got back up again, shockingly so did our foe seemingly unharmed but calm, collected and without a will to fight anymore. She pointed towards the nearby woods and our foe, known as Fabian spoke as if he was talking to royalty, "yes my queen, i shall gather wood for your companions fire" and that's where we realised that Fabian was under her control. Long have i traveled with her, long have i feared her... long have i wished for our paths to split, and to start life a new. I've seen many monsters and i rather fight a dragon unarmed than fight the veiled lady, for i can see the hatred, the fear and the fury in a dragon, i can hear its mighty roar and gruff voice. The veiled lady however.. there is no face, there is no sound unless she wishes for you to hear and there is no telling if she already won. Check out the veiled lady mushroom to get a visual idea about the character. Sorry if this isn't from the perspective from the warlock itself, but i hope anyone who read it enjoyed it. And sorry if there are any grammatical errors.

I’m going to take part in a campaign in which I play a 10 ft tall Minotaur barbarian, ( yes, I asked my dM if I could be a large creature and he said yes! :D ) for a backstory: I’m the Minotaur from the mythology, after I got killed the gods snapped me back to kinda make fun of me and after that they just dropped me back to the plains, 1 of the other party members found me and kinda adopted me. Although my Minotaur is stupid as they come he knows that the party are his friends and will do anything to protect them ( since they were the first other beings that actually cares about him ) does this sound good for a character?

I say that the exact form depends entirely on the intention behind its creation. If it is a combat form then it would probably look quite bizarre as efficiency in neutraizing and dispatching threats is emphasized, but a form for communicating with other lifeforms will probably be quite a general one composed of all the shared traits observed in the other races. That being said now I am imagining a Myconid Artificer that was made for diplomacy but due to an unfortunate interaction with gaint magic became permanently enlarged and now has to act through her creations for practicality's sake.

After reading the lore into Myconids, i discovered that dwarves eat them. Apparently they are a delicacy, there was a dwarven cook who made Myconid pies and they would go 500 gold a pie. So a funny idea for my Myconid character would be having them have a street urchin background. "Stuck in a dwarven city, making my way to the surface fleeing from short, stouty, impressively bearded men (and women) with white coats and tall puffy hats, holding metal pans and knives whilst searching for rich nutrient dirt in a labyrinth of stone and metal. In here i knew i couldn't trust anyone, they always kept saying i was 'delicious' though i have no idea what that means"

Hey I’m about to run a short underdark adventure and a player wants to do myconid! I found a pdf that makes literally everything in the monster manual a playable race, including shroom bois that seem pretty balanced, but I appreciate the length you went here. The odd thing is that they only allow rapport spores once per short rest. I’m guessing to balance the fact you can communicate with almost anything, but just once is a little brutal. Do you think a number of time = con mod or prof bonus is more fair though?
@Rookzer03 жыл бұрын
I think that could work. I'd say it would be more fun to use it all the time. But it will be more work for you as the dm to balance and keep fair. Try the con mod out and change as need be.

Or maybe number of creatures per con mod/long rest?
@17joren3 жыл бұрын
@@Rookzer0 thanks for the feedback! do you mean with the second suggestion “communicate with # of creatures = con mod, once per LR?” The author’s justification for once per rest was because it’s basically like having Rary’s telepathic bond, a 5th level spell. I agree that it would be fun to not be limited with # times, so I’m considering even giving them basic telepathy like GOO so it’s only 2-way comms, rather than being a hotspot for everything in 20ft.
