I mean. In Forgotten Realms at least, they do come from somewhere, it's just complicated. But fuck it. I'll give it a shot. Dragonborn are a race of humanoids who were originally a part of a world known as Abeir, which is a mirrored copy of Toril, save for all but one thing. Except for gods and their creations ruling the world, it was primordial elementals. Being treated like slaves to do all sorts of work, the Dragonborn eventually evolved from a regular Human, into what they now are. A being who is able to put up with the elements. (Side-note: This is why I don't like that it says you have a Draconic lineage.) But then everything changed when a smart-ass prodigy decided to become a god. You see, back in Toril, there was a young Arcanist named Karsus. I say Arcanist because magic was highly specialized, and all sorts of other stuff were going on. Back to the story, Karsus was a young prodigy who was doing magical feats that took other people years to learn. After getting cocky and spending a lot of time experimenting, he cast the only known 12th level spell, killing Mystryl, and becoming the god of Magic. This, however, created cataclysmic events. Plural. As magic was so wild because of the Weave needing constant repair, that even a farmer could cast something like Firebolt. So in a split moment, magic in Toril shut down. Floating cities fell to the ground, Karsus was immediately booted out and forgotten to become a Great Old One, whilst a new God of magic, Mystra, came into existence and shut down the magic system, whilst repairing the Weave. This however ended up killing her I believe. (That may not be it, but she did die shortly after). So one of her greatest Clerics took over as the god of Magic, keeping the name Mystra and changing the magic system to what it is now. What about the Dragonborn? Weren't you going to explain their appearance? Well during all that chaos that happened in but a single moment, let's say a time period akin to one round of combat. (6 seconds). Abeir and Toril become one once again, as the primordial elementals were kicked into the elemental plane of their respective domain, and the once Human, now dubbed Dragonborn, "came into existence". So there you go. If my memory serves me correctly, this is the history, with some added information, as to how Dragonborn came to Toril.

The story of how my Goliath turned into a kenku. It was the first character I’d ever made and I had planned on playing a goblin and it had a whole backstory and everything, but due to the limited options that we had starting out on dnd beyond there was only the phb races and for some reason Goliath, and so kind of just annoyed that I couldn’t play this character I wanted to for so long I made a character really quick, a Goliath barbarian, what makes him different from grog you ask? He wields a greatsword instead and his thing was that he really hated raging, because being angry caused him a lot of mistakes in his past, and then to get the goblin in there that I loved so much I made it that he learned goblin to stop the ongoing raids on a small town at the foot of his mountain and they were friends and everything was fine. But here’s the catch, a few sessions in and me and my younger brother, (a tiefling rogue) were sent to explore a goblin hide out, so me as a brand new player, innocent and bushy tailed assumed that I could convince the goblins to be our friends, as we entered traps were sprung I was hurt as I yelled out into the cave for peace with failed roll after failed roll, as goblins stabbed my Goliaths legs down to 0 HP and me and my younger brother were cast into the feeding pit for the wolves, luckily we got to make death saves, I failed all three but my brother survived, it was the saddest death any character has ever had for me, as the only thing that made his death not in vein was the fact that we ruled that the only reason my brother survived was because the wolves focused on eating my character. My DM and I were saddened by either off our first character death and so he instead of letting my character die, which he honestly should have he sent a new group of players out with a stone of reincarnation, I don’t even know how they got it we were like level 4 or something and we rolled on an extended table and what do I get, a kenku, that is the story on how my Goliath Barbarian turned into a kenku for pacifism towards goblins.

I really love the Goliath but have been surprised to see that there aren't any subraces for them that dabble with the other Giant types. I personally think that a Frost or Fire Goliath would be awesome. You can make your own Barbarian Elsa. The cold never bothered that Frost Goliath Princess anyway. Or a Zuko Fire Goliath that is hunting down one destined to topple the plans of his Kingdom.
@Rookzer04 жыл бұрын
Yeah Really cool idea, I think they got a little lost in the transitions from earlier editions, I would say any giant race that works well for you just go for it. swap out stone's endurance with their elemental type and rock on!
@shaynewaugh21114 жыл бұрын
@@Rookzer0 Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. My mind always goes to giving the Goliath subtypes resistance to their element but that never seemed quite balanced with the one off that Stones Endurance gives. Would it make more sense to give them something like a one time Hellish Rebuke, or innate spell casting to cast an offensive cantrip of their element? Or would it just be fine to replace it whole sale with the resistance?
@Rookzer04 жыл бұрын

I just play a Way of the Four Elements monk and I've completed the Storm King's Thunder campaign setting. Also you could make a Runic Warrior fighter if you want to allign more to giantkind. But as the video states at the start, Goliath doesn't have an affinity to the elements or nature like other nature-oriented races. They are just really good at living on top of the mountains.

I LOVE that he brought up the tattoos and their connection to the Goliath’s fate. I made a Goliath Barbarian with a Nobel background. The whole thing about her was that she was living a conflicted life and didn’t actually have the typical Barbarian personality. Her father was Nobleman and her mother was a Barbarian Chieftain. Not gonna go into how that happened, but young love and all that. Moving on, her whole thing was that she was fated to lead her tribe in the name of an evil god. It’s this god that actually is responsible for the rage that flows through her people. It was a “blessing” *cough curse cough* She DID NOT want to follow this fate. She didn’t want to rule and pointlessly kill. She actually prefers reading over fighting and preferred to talk things out when she could. Unfortunately she still suffers from the curse of rage so a lot of times a fight is inevitable. So she left home and set out on an adventure in the hopes that she could free herself and her people from the dark god’s curse. To free herself from her fate.

Goliath is my favorite 5e race, and I don't think they get enough credit. Most recently I've made a glaive-wielding goliath with fire giant heritage who's a ranger in a druidic tribe(specifically the Fire Ashari from Critical Role). He's actually rather quiet and subdued, but a killing machine if his clan is threatened. He has a loving wife and son, but he begrudgingly had to leave home to help the tribe clear out a large area influenced by the fire plane on another continent. He absolutely hates elementals after a rogue fire portal allowed elementals to wreck his tribe previously, so clearing the suckers out to help people avoid the hell they faced was something he had to do. I absolutely love him.

Confused by the Bill Roper name drop, as a Happy jacks fan lol. I've loved Goliath's since they first came out in Races of Stone, way back when. They where a little broken then, but now they are fine, if mechanically shoehorned. My favorite 5e PC so far was a Goliath Monk, his marks where skeletal looking so his tribe dumped him on the door step of a temple of Ilamter. I reflavored Monk Of the Long Death to be him working hospice care, and gaining insight into death in a peaceful caring way. His full name was Guides Souls to Rest, or just Soul. He was a good boy, and I miss him a ton. He's like a more stoic Caduceus in a way. (Years before Caddy was made) ANYWAYS, nice vid!

The idea that I have is this: there is only ONE Goliath city, Olympia, considered their sacred home, located on the slopes of the tallest mountain of the world - called in Giant "The Womb of Iron", considered the birthplace of the race - and in there, they train a warrior order known as "Panzer Knights", an elite unit of Warriors where they use super-heavy black armor, but their only weapon is their +3 heavy gauntlets and boots.

I honestly think they should have a power set/history related more so to the coldness of the mountains rather than earth-related powers. We don't have enough ice-themed races in the main races, and it would make sense in a lore sense. Goliaths could be cold, stoic killers, moving away from their barbarian stereotype and moreso towards the "honorable samurai" archetype. But that's just how I utilize them personally, they're a very malleable and diverse race lore-wise.

Note how "stoneskin" plays into Goliath's tendency to eventually overchallange themselves. At early levels the d12+con modifier is a huge deal, but at later levels it's mediocre at best. Oh right and something I've realized and DM out there might find it useful: Goliath have their motting they believe has something to do with their fate. And Storm Giants are stereotypically oracles who read omens. So Storm Giants can literally read a Goliath.

I personally really like the idea of making Goliaths Warlocks or Paladins. The fact that they are somewhat nomadic in nature means they can easily fall for a lot of hooks that the outside world uses to draw people into their religion. I mean if you told a Goliath, "Hey if you worship this god you can kill people with the power of the fucking sun" or "If you worship this demon you can suck the life out of anyone and never be close to death again", I'm sure Goliaths would love that shit and eat it up. At the same time though, they could be a big hazard to the cause if they don't truly believe in it, I mean, not exactly a wise idea to have a giant dude with a war axe try and sneak past the guards to slip that poison into the king's drink because Azmodan of the nine Hells commanded it.
