@englishmanspeaks I didn't say it wasn't. I said the distinction is irrelevant since in both cases you're wriggling out of paying your fair share. One's legal, one isn't, but in both cases it's unethical. But like I said I'm not interested in having some argument with you about this. I know people like you and I know the things I'm going to hear: 'scroungers', 'free-market', 'too many people on benefits', 'taxes too high', 'get Brexit done', etc. Everything about you screams little-England Tory, right down to the username, and it's rarely productive to debate with people like that.

He baldly stated that his morality was flexible. I don't know what more honest thing he could say about it. The loopholes never get closed because the super-rich have no intention of giving them up, and this is true of humanity in general, all over the world, and occurs everywhere that it isn't expressly prevented and constantly enforced. This might be because many of the persons who make up humanity have flexible morality as well.

I would put people who pronounce the letter H “hache” into room 101. I’ve heard Brits on other shows pronounce it that way, but many don’t. Is it a regional thing? I realize Brits pronounce many things differently from Americans. If, for whatever reason, they want to pronounce the letter Z as “zed”, that’s fine, but, for some reason, the “hache” thing bugs me. That, and when they pronounce “tortoise” as “tor-toys”
@cubworx73973 жыл бұрын
I agree, speaking as someone to moved to England from abroad ('the colonies' where we learnt proper English). It is a Northern thing I think, for both the H and the tortoise pronunciation. My grandmother, from Lincoln, said 'toy-toys' for tortoise. You learn to accept it. England is full of these little anomalies.
@TheValeyard923 жыл бұрын
You're not meant to aspirate an H whatever side of the pond you're on, and not all of us do. As for why Z is "zed"; that would be because every step of that word's evolution has had a hard consonant sound at the end until it got to the States and they decided that was a wee bit too difficult for them. And "taught us" is a description of what a teacher did, not the name of a marine reptile.
@asterix78423 жыл бұрын
@@TheValeyard92 Yes, you're right, when it comes to the letter Z, the US is more evolved, but no one said anything about "taught us". Actually, Z derives from the Greek Zeta, which does not have a hard consonant sound at the end. Zed is one letter and one syllable shorter than Zeta. Does that mean the Brits found Zeta to be a wee too difficult?
@TheValeyard923 жыл бұрын
@@asterix7842 That'd probably be a real zinger if the Greeks used the same alphabet, if the "a" at the end of "zeta" wasn't indicative of how most Mediterranean languages elongate words with a small vowel sound, and if "zed" had come straight to English from Greek with nothing in between. In any case, I have no problem with any evolution of any word. You lot, however, always seem to treat anything that came before your version as some kind of mistake... Even though the language is called (say it with me now)...
@caliente-frio3966 Жыл бұрын
It's more of a stupid thing than a regional thing. I think the biggest cause of this is bad teaching in nurseries and primary schools. Some teachers would go through the alphabet, making the sound each letter makes, like, "T. Tuh, tuh, T. As in T for train." So, with H, they'd go, "H. Huh, huh, haitch. As in haitch for happy." I used to have a (pretty stupid) girlfriend who worked at a nursery, and we would have arguments over this. She insisted that it's haitch because it makes a "huh, huh" sound. I thought it was shocking that she was allowed to teach young children. Well anyway, these children then grow up saying haitch, and they pass it on to their children. Any sensible, educated person in England knows it's aitch. However, some people who _do_ know better still end up saying haitch in an attempt to sound more tough, common or working class. There's a real stigma in England about being too posh or middle class. My brother is a good example of this. He would say aitch normally up until he was about 16, and now he says haitch. Yeah, so I guess there's a sense of peer pressure too; maybe one or two of the cooler/tougher kids at school say haitch, so others start copying them. It's got really bad though. When I started primary school (in 1993), everyone said aitch. I didn't start noticing haitch being said until about five years later, but still, only about 5% of the people would use it. Honestly, it now seems like it's at 50/50 with haitch and aitch. You even get people doing voice-over work (perhaps for an HSBC or H&M commercial), saying haitch on national TV. It's awful. It's definitely not a regional thing. I'm from the southeast of England, one of the least "regional" places in England (the accent here is pretty much the standard English accent you'd hear in films or documentaries), and people still say haitch here. Frank Skinner (the host of this show) is from Birmingham, one of the more "regional" places in England, and he says aitch properly. In fact, you see he does say haitch at first, probably to make the woman feel comfortable, but he then thinks better of himself and goes back aitch. The Scottish man (also with a pretty "regional" accent) says aitch properly too. It really just comes down to the person, rather than where they're from. I have heard that it comes from telephone operators back in the day, having to say haitch because H could be misheard as A, but I don't know if there's any truth to this. I still say it just comes down to people being stupid. Sorry for the long rant, but really hate this. This is something I would be putting in Room 101 too.

Most importantly I should make it clear that I’m an American and an American talking about British tax rules is probably the height of arrogance. However, I’ve been called a very arrogant person so I’m going to live up to that standard. I think Jimmy Carr is wrong or was wrong to cave into the pressures by the government officials who are doing exactly the same thing that he was accused of as being inappropriate. Tax avoidance should be okay if there’s a law that says you can do it. Jimmy Carr should have in my opinion made a public statement that until they change the law that he was going to take every advantage of tax avoidance that he possibly could because all they had to do to correct the situation was to change the tax rules so that everybody paid the same tax. Otherwise, if they are willing to do that then it shows just exactly what kind of lying bastards those government officials truly are. Then Jimmy Carr could have kept the prices for his shows down and he would be a whole lot richer until the government finally admitted that they were greedy wealthy individuals.
@gyroscope9152 жыл бұрын
The thing is, and its pointed out on his speech here, despite what alot of people think, he is a decent guy. He could have just not payed the tax and carried on not paying taxes, none of what he did is illegal. But it is unethical And that's what he had a problem with. That's why he paid the tax and stoped doing what he did and went out of his way to learn about the topic. For him it isn't about the legality of it. But the morality of it. And that's what he says in his speech, is there is always going to someone else that does what he did and doesn't care about the morality of it. So the law needs to change because those people never will. He saw why what he was doing is wrong but the next 100 people that do it won't. So you need to change the law, because you can't have a system that rewards having poor morals. He has been very out spoken and active in getting the tax law changed the last few years. It does seem like he took it in his stride and learnt from the situation and educated himself on the subject and is now trying to make things better
@nycbearff6 күн бұрын
His public reputation is hugely important to his career - he handled the whole thing perfectly, and is still wealthy while also being still popular. If he'd continued the tax avoidance plan, his income would have taken a big hit and his TV career would have been curtailed. Also, hes a decent guy - that's not always obvious from his comedy, but it's very clear from interviews he's given. And - I'm an American who thinks that the common American I've-got-mine-screw-you attitude is immoral and disgusting. The tax loopholes for people, corporations and churches in the USA should be eliminated, too.

If you live on your own island which is not part of any other nation, pay for your own national defense, pay for your own policing, utilities, medical bills, etc, pay for infrastructure maintenance, pay to maintain the international relationships you have with other countries, pay for the medical bills and living expenses of any employees you have who become ill or disabled, and pay for the education of any kids your employees have, then you're doing what a normal government does. You do not live in isolation - you need to contribute to the country you live in because you benefit from all the services it provides for you and your fellow citizens. If you don't like paying taxes to allow the government to perform all those services, leave and start your own country. If you can't afford to do that - pay your taxes so the government you live under can do all that.

This show must have been created by someone from Scotland. It’s basically 3 rather successful people complaining about stuff 😂

Tax resistance is a civil disobedience meaning you can refuse to pay tax and the government must tolerate the disobedience legally. However, you better have a good reason - refusal to fund an unjust war for example - if not the government will drag you through the courts and prison time can and will be served. I'm slowly working towards a legally sound way of avoiding the license fee and other such obligatory but unjust taxes. If you have any let me know

1:19 Why does the illustration accompanying the question of Scotland look like someone from a continent far away from Scotland?? It looks like half african man with slight dreadlocks/curls. This isn't how scottish people look. WTF kind of weird propaganda is this?

J NYC I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to be William Wallace. Better well known as the main character in braveheart
