Part 1 in my Digital Room Correction Series. In this video I show how to use Room Eq Wizard to create corrections filters, that can be exported as an impulse response, then loaded into a convolution plugin on your master out.

I will be adding links to debate and science as well.
A flat frequency response is not necessarily better.
Some will feel as though there is a lack of low frequency content,
and that the sound is very bright in the higher frequencies. This may cause you to
overcompensate when mixing/mastering, leading to a boomy, dull sound.

Hey, great videos!! I've been using KRK ergo but i want more control so i'm looking at something like this. The only downside is that i would have to bypass the plugin everytime i bounce, or the fact that i'll not have the correction enabled while listening to itunes, youtube etc. One thing that came to my mind just now is that you probably could send the masterbus from your DAW out via Dante VIA (noticed the wordplay?) and host the correction filter in another program... maybe even a stand alone vst host like chainer or something like that. Then in Dante Via you send it from the "host" to the physical outputs of your soundcard. That way you could set up a Dante preset so that all your audio applications play thru the correction. Set Dante and the filter correction host to auto start so that there's no extra setting up. Never have to worry about accidentally sending the final master to vinyl cutting with the "room correction enabled" :)

Great, I haven't seen any video so far of eating doing this correctly. I have a 1616 emu, these interfaces are really cool. I also have an 1820 but the audiodock malfunctions. I will try to calibrate and apply the filters to see what results with the ECM 8000

This was incredibly helpful. Thank you. Can you advise the mic positions when taking the left and right speaker measurements? I'm using a Behringer ECM 8000 and believe that for full range, this should be pointed at the center and horizontal. So do you keep this position the same and just take two readings? Or are you pointing the mic at the speaker (from the listening position)? Or quite probably something else entirely? Thanks again

Note: A flat frequency response may not sound good to many people. A flat response may sound as if there is a lack of low frequency, and abundance of high frequencies. They may prefer a boost in the lower frequencies, and a slope drop-off on the higher frequencies. Research "house curves". Also, doing the exact method shown in this video(I called it the "no boost" method) may not sound great either. It could cause ringing and other undesirable sounds due to large amount of cut frequencies and slope of filters. I recommend meeting half way as discussed toward the end of the video. I recommend you not use this as an all around solution, as proper treatment is recommended. A better acoustic environment may lead to better results due to less correction needed. This however can be used as an alternate method of reference to check mixes/masters.

In my case, the Target level is only 60, therefore the final overall volume after Fog Convolver is to low. It is because when I was doing the measurement, it overall loudness is is too low. May I know is there any method to manually increase the filter's volume (for the final result)?

Hi great video, I want to do room EQ for a stereo system. I use the emu 1212m as source, no DAW and such. Is there a way to add the correction filters directly to patchmix DSP? There is a parametric EQ in Patchmix can it import the plugins directly? Thanks.

Hey, I'm a little late on this but great video. Question: Is there is difference between using a Linear Phase EQ in the Master Section of my DAW and a Convolution Reverb? I thought the EQ is for the frequency correction and the C-Reverb is for the Delays of the frequencys.

hey chris. i think he only took the room response so he could load it in his DAW using SPAN to show how the filter effects or flattens the room. i think all we need are the filters response to load in the convolution plugin.

Quick question, your mic has a frequency response to record sound, you mentioned that is was important.. don't you have to calibrate that first before anything?
@SawUp
@SawUp 5 жыл бұрын
Peaks and dips of a measurement mic are negligible compared to those of the acoustic response and thus can be ignored (check Ethan Winer'site on measure mic comparison). Mic calibration is useful when doing precision measurement of sounds in anechoic room and so forth.

I use system wide convolution and with this method (and some focus on my render settings) don't have to disable it at any point as it is not part of the rendering this way. Equalizer APO would be a place to start. If you're on a mac, things are a bit more complicated without any external correction devices, like a dsp

I have a question. if you don't correct above 1K to avoid phasing issues, and you correct only downwards by setting up the target level lower, how is your entire frequency spectrum not slanted so that it's louder above 1K? I hope my question is clear. this really bothers me. I would really appreciate an answer!

this is a great article on what to do with your measurements and applying the eq correction filters. using 'variable smoothing' might yield more natural results, and could help you with the correcting above 1k concerns: www.pro-tools-expert.com/home-page/how-to-set-up-room-eq-wizard-to-eq-your-monitoring-system when exporting the correction filters, use @Dozerbeatz method for exporting impulse files (vs the standard eq filter for correction)

@SawUp

In the lows yes, but mic has to be omni. Thin design of measure mics is there to prevent interferences in the highs. You can definitely start with your condenser, small diaphragm being better.

You don't really want to EQ above 3-400Hz, or the Schroeder frequency if you want to be bery conservative. Because at higher frequencies, we don't really hear what we measure.

Old comment, but a good question. So just in case anybody else comes across this: You put the filters in a plug-in that sits in the monitoring bus of the DAW (or in a system wide eq like EQ APO), So you hear the correction as you're mixing and affects the way you eq things, but the correction is not printed to the final mix when you render it, because it's not a part of the master bus effects chain.

This is a terrible technique. This EQ correction must have been measured for that point of space in room. But even one single cm away, your room might have a very different frequency response. There is no other way except to acoustically treat your room with absorption and diffusion. And secondly, it won't fix ringing in your room.
@AceDeclan
@AceDeclan 6 жыл бұрын
How would moving 1 cm back change the response? Its not like the eq isn’t applied further back in the room.
@hidjedewitje
@hidjedewitje 6 жыл бұрын
Daltira The eq is applied on everything that is send to the speakers. Therefore the filter will be the same for every spot in the room. The problem however is that the room doesn't sound the same everywhere. This means the filter should be different for every place in the room. Which is (as of today) impossible.
@SawUp
@SawUp 5 жыл бұрын
Nope. If you use the variable smoothing on your measure, the response is flattened in the high frequencies, so the number, gain and Q of the filters are very light, but still very effective in the lows, where wavelengths are greater (100Hz > 3,4m), so moving a bit won't affect the response. But you're right, EQ must be done once all proper acoustic treatment has been done. EQ and convolution can nothing against modal ringing.
@NIGHTWULF
@NIGHTWULF 5 жыл бұрын
you're right that different areas of the room have different frequency responses but you're over exagerating by saying a single cm
