Root Cause and Solution of Internal Conflict in Sikh Panth over Different Interpretations of Gurbani

Sikh political analyst and author Bhai Ajmer Singh addressed a gathering organised by Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle (GGSSC) in Kotkapura on December 9, 2017 where he shared views on topic "Contemporary Challenges before the Sikh Panth and their Solution" in detail.
This video clip is taken out of that speech. In this part Bhai Ajmer Singh explained the root cause of internal conflict between some sections of the Sikh panth over the interpretation of Gurbani. He said that sincere Sikh sections must effectively intervene in proper manner to place an estoppel on propaganda that is dividing the Panth in a very concerning manner.

Deconstruction of rational binaries (or certainties) 1) pacifism vs violence Eg. 1st 5 Gurus Vs last 5 Gurus Deconstruct to reveal that all of the Gurus had instructed Sikhs to resist social oppression. Guru Nanaks sayings against exploitation, caste prejudices, Bhai Lalos story, Guru Angad Dev on training, wrestling and physical fitness, Guru Arjan Dev keeping horses, community service, uneasiness between Sikhs and govt, political threat, Guru Hargobind - swords. By drawing straight lines we immediately imagine the first 5 Gurus to be pacifist and withdrawn from society, and the last five violent and less peaceful, when violence and peace can be present on both sides of the constructed/assumed divide 2) Religion v Secular Private v Public Deconstruction reveals that there is no public or private sphere. In Sikhism politics is a form of religion. We are religious in both word and deed, and what we practice has public consequences. By shutting Sikhism up in a box it is wrongly aligned with spiritual traditions that focus only on the self and ignore social responsibilities (ie hinduism). By the term 'religion' secularists are referring to private worship at a synagogue, church, temple, gurdwara, or mosque, and they wrongly assume them to be the same. 3) Speech Vs Writing Speech is privileged by Plato, Rousseau, Levi-Strauss, and Suassare over Writing because speech is taken to be more direct than writing. In India the introduction of the textual tradition by the West (eg Islam and Koran) was seen as violence against the oral tradition of hinduism. Deconstruction reveals that Writing is another form of speech, so writing can't be violence. In the Sikh tradition, their is no privileging of orality over textuality. The Sikhs believe that the Shabad (Word) is Guru, it can be spoken or read. 4) Nationalism (Pakistan v India) Hindu nationalism and Pakistani nationalism. They are not homogenous nations. And they are not merely Indian, Pakistani, Hindu or Muslim. India was part of Pakistan, and Pakistan part of India. 5) Sikhs v Hindus No religion emerges out of a vacuum, Islam and Hinduism were present in Punjab for centuries before Sikhi(sm) took birth. Deconstruction reveals that there are Sanatan-Brahmanized sects (Udasi, Nirmalla, Meenas etc) under the category 'Sikh' (lying in between), and that the uniform Sikh identity is a colonial construct. However the Khalsa form of Sikhism (mainstream) is the most authentic and has been for decades until it began to be polluted around late 18th century. To preserve mainstream Sikhism, it's purity and its unique 'identity' from Hinduism Sikhs must follow the teachings and practices of the 10 Gurus to arrive at (or get closer to) the Truth. Article 25 is controversial because Sikhs have been grouped with Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. This should be challenged as it doesn't tell us what the differences are. Emphasis is placed on Sameness and not Difference by the Indian nation.

Derrida's deconstruction can be liberating at times and sometimes a nuisance. He deconstructs oversimplified national identities and homogenized nation states, but continues with his method to locate heterogeneity in sub groups, preventing any kind of unified cohesive community to form. Consequently the community is depoliticized, and has no target - no political aim, no struggle for self determination. Edward Said was critical of Derrida for placing things out of context. Edward was a campaigner for Palestinian political independence and his work is indicative of this, whereas Derrida remained almost absent from politics. Derrida's greatest contribution however is on interpretation and translation of texts, and Edwards path breaking book Orientalism owes much to Foucault and Derrida. Orientalism has the tendency to universalize identities. There are people today who talk of the universality of Islam or Buddhism and Confucianism, when it is apparent that the people who practice these religions are divided on national lines. Vietnamese for example are not Chinese, centuries of conflict divided these people. The Vietnamese are proud of their distinct identity and cultural heritage, just as Japanese are proud of theirs. But Japan is not homogenous, and neither is China, though Buddhism or Daoism may have a universal appeal.

The Guru Granth Sahib Ji is in Gurmukhi, not English or Hindi. The Sikhs have affection for their native language that only they can understand. They wear turbans not European hats, and have distinct values and customs. They prefer to live the life of saint warriors, and not ordinary people driven by personal interests and desires in modern societies. They don't relegate their heritage to the past (as is done by History), but keep it breathing by following the examples of their ancestors. Though the message of Sikhism is universal, the culture itself is relative.

The root cause in Sikhi is Apostasy; departing from the Truth. No more Guru, no more Truth. The scholars and PhDs will never understand Guru ki Bani. They are no more connected to Akal Purkh, as were the gurus. I dare to say that they cannot understand one word of Gurbani as it should be understood by the power of the Holy Ghost or the Spirit. Yes Bhai Sahb, logocentric (absolute) meanings can not be found in the teachings of the Guru Granth Sahib. The meaning can not be deciphered by the intellect, a relationship between the unconscious (and conscious) and the GurBani must be established. The spirit must transcend to the level of super consciousness (towards the infinite) to 'understand' the Gurus sayings. Mere logic can not grasp the infinite, it can only conceptualise and give fixed meanings to things in the finite world (from where we get our categories). Christian metaphysics, western rationality and Hindu interpretations have failed to give correct translations. Sikh scholars too are doing PhDs on Guru Granth Sahib, but these translations are also poor.
