i liked it when you took it out of the pot and placed it on the table... like a cut out from nature and it held in shape perfectly like a slice of cake or something

It's nice to see this, it means it is a good time to repot. If your soil falls apart, it's too soon!

That's some vintage Nigel root correction. Something I learned watching your videos...nobody really shows that part this detailed. Many bonsai people tend to say well this tree has a good root base and this one has a bad one.. And don't do much to correct it. So I guess you taught me how to correct roots!
@1958bytor
@1958bytor 3 жыл бұрын
I would take the second one off on the right too. It gives a hump to the root base.

Doesn't there come a point where you can say that all the roots are crossing each other on that tree? It really is a slippery slope.
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 3 жыл бұрын
It's good to build up a basic radial structure and then later you can have fine roots crossing, creating an outer mesh.

There's a point up to which having all roots perfectly radial is appealing to the eye. It looks more natural with a mix of the two. But as you said, the artistic sens will dictate which way to go.

What happens if I repot and bare root one of my maples right now. The first flush of leaves has hardened. I've pruned long growth. If I cut roots now will it die
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 3 жыл бұрын
They could do OK. It's better in spring, but I have planted many maples mid summer. I would take it easy on the root pruning.

how often is "regular" repotting for a ficus?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on many factors. If your tree has grown out a lot, usually the root system does the same. If your tree is just growing slowly and you are keeping it shaped, then the roots will grow slowly too. A ficus that is growing with vigor, I would root prune every one to two years, a slow growing Ficus, maybe every 5. The pot, the climate, and general care, are all factors!
