I just decided to use Biblioplan next year for ancient history. It has Bible reading that goes along with the history reading and is very Christ centered. I love that Biblical history will be taught right alongside everything else. They have amazing literature suggestions for all ages, which I plan to take advantage of! My kids will be in 8th, 6th, 3rd and 1st. Have you ever looked into Biblioplan?

We are doing Vikings from Gatherround currently (Lesson 12) and are LOVING IT! I would recommend doing it before Middle Ages since it's the bridge between Ancient Rome and Middle Ages and since you're planning on doing both it would tie those two together nicely. Anyway, I have a 13, 14 and 16 year old and they find it fascinating and are GLUED to it. Love your channel and God bless you all.

So agree about how we teach our kids about other belief systems or religions! I’m not gonna tell my kids about all the different religions and let them choose what they think is true - I’m gonna tell them what IS the truth and how there are differing things that others believe. Obviously as they get older, they’ll likely have more questions and even doubts that we’ll need to work through, but I don’t need to tell my young kids they what I know to be true is just one set of beliefs they could choose to believe but there’s also others out there they could choose.

I'm considering using The Playful Pioneers with my 16 yo (11th grade), 14 yo (9th grade), 11 yo (6th grade), and 8 yo (2nd grade) this upcoming school year. I was wondering, from the sample pages on their website, I don't see any book suggestions for high school like I do in some of the other guides. What types of literature did you have your high schooler read while using the playful pioneers? It looks and sounds amazing...and I LOVE the Little House Books...so I'm excited to possibly use it, I just want to make sure it will work with the ages of all my kids! Also, do you have a video explaining what resources you used to teach your kids about foraging, herbs, holistic medicine, etc.? That is something I would LOVE to teach to my kids!

Thanks for sharing these! I'm curious how the health and physical body unit covers nutrition? Is it from a food pyramid point of view or a more holistic, whole foods way? We did ancient civilizations from GR and enjoyed it, but it is definitely one I would recommend spreading out. We attempted to do it as our main curriculum as written, and it was a blur of groups, names, etc. That said, there's a lot of interesting info in it. I would just say, spread it out :)

So we use Beautiful Feet (so far only the elementary) and here is my opinion (coming from someone with the same convictions as you when it comes to magic and darkness in general). I love it. We have the 'Around the World in Picture Books' and 'Early American History' some of the American history books touch on magic and the spirits the Indians believed in along with different religions that were popular at the time, but because it is done as read alouds and in a family style learning it has organically brought up really good talking points for me to explain in my own words what we believe and why. My kids are all very young (3,4,6,7,9) but I think it's really important to have these talks starting at a young age that there are people who believe other things this is why they believe that and this is how/why we believe what we believe. I think it builds their faith giving them personal examples that they can reflect on latet in life rather than shielding them from all other religions (I was shielded from all things not Christian my entire life and had to do some major soul searching once I became an adult to figure out why I believed what I believed other than "because my parents said"). I have lightly touched on magic, evolution and other religions and my 9 year old especially will point things out now that he hears or reads and tells me "this is what others believe but it is not truth according to God."

My Father's World price tag is a whooper but 50% of its profits goes to missionaries. Also, a representative from MFW calls you during the year and prays for you 🧡. However, this year we will be studying Ancient Civilization and Middles Ages but these time periods are not my favorite. I did NOT want to study it for a TWO year AT. ALL. with MFW. So we may use Sonlight, Masterbooks (accelerated) or Gather Round. I am leaning towards Sonlight because it already has the discussion questions, readers, timeline and crafts. I think maybe it depends on what you mean by convictions. And I mean this TOTALLY respectfully, for example, I have a conviction about not using TGTB because of its affiliations. So I think maybe knowing what your convictions SPECIFICALLY are it may help people give you a better idea. We LOVE Gather Round but I have also heard really good things about Mystery of History and Biblioplan. 😊 Maybe one of those would be a good fit for you if you want to spend more time on Ancient History than Gather Round.
@RootedHomeLife
@RootedHomeLife Жыл бұрын
I totally get that! I felt that way too initially, but my convictions have more to do with the actual content, which I haven’t found to be a problem in anything I’ve used/seen from TGTB, whereas I don’t want to spend a year learning about Greek gods and mythology from secular books. That’s not to say my thoughts would never change on any of the above, but that’s where I’m at with it all at the moment.

@@RootedHomeLife I think the Gather Round unit study is a PERFECT fit then 😊 Also, I would suggest Story of the World vol 1 as a read aloud. It covers ancient history and while it does spend maybe a chapter on Greek gods, it also spends some time on other stories too including stories from the bible.

We used beautiful feet books and I found it to be too Christian (we're not Christian)... Loved the literature based approach but funnily enough, given your qualms, I remember I kept having to interject to tell my kids, "now we don't believe this to be true, but..." Simply Charlotte Mason comes to mind, if no one has mentioned it yet, as something to investigate.

What psychology curriculum are you planning to use? I'd love to find one with a Christian worldview. I got my M.A. in professional counseling and that has helped me understand people and have more compassion. I believe it has helped me be a better wife and mother.

You are wrong about Beautiful Feet. There is a 2 page long explanation about teaching myths in the introduction of Intermediate Ancient. In that guide, there is a lot of Bible reading. Most of the guides in the intermediate levels include missionary or obviously Christian books like Sergeant York.

I did read that in the guide, and I respect that perspective, but I don’t want to spend that much time reading that in-depth on Greek gods, etc.

We love MFW. But it is pricey. We just finished Creation to the Greeks and enjoyed it. But also enjoy Biblioplan! That's a great one if you haven't looked into it. More affordable and a huge booklist in the TM. Along with a movie list as well. Everything comes from a Christian world view. You can do as much or as little as you want. We read the Remember the Days book and it was very enjoyable reading. Looks like a textbook but reads very nicely. It's biblical history tied into the Acient one. So lots of Bible stories.

I love Beautiful Feet books curriculum books precisely because they offer a wide range of literature (they could use a revision on some; more diverse titles imo) To quote Grace Lin (Ted Talk) and Amber O’Neal Johnston (Heritage Mom) children need windows and mirrors in education/literature. History is complicated and I have yet to find a curriculum, especially a Christian curriculum, that does it justice (they usually present a very white/ western world view ) when it pertains to history . I think it’s our job to keep reiterating that this is what “WE believe, this is what God says, and this is what THEY believe”. I really love what Rachel @SEVENINALL says about teaching history (she’s also a strong believer). Obviously it’s up to your discernment but I think the older kids are fully capable of analyzing cultural perspectives.
