The reasons for rooting and installing custom ROMs have largely become obsolete. The main motivations, such as removing bloatware to improve phone performance or sideloading apps from other OEMs that wouldn’t typically work on the Galaxy S5, are now irrelevant. Today’s midrange and flagship Android devices are incredibly fast, even those with excessive telco bloatware. I came across this video after finding my Galaxy S5 in a drawer, and when I removed the battery and saw (or rather, was forcefully reminded) that it only has a 2800mAh capacity, I was shocked. Despite deleting most of the third-party apps I had installed, this relic still drops from 100% to 90% in just 2 hours without any use. If you actually use it, the battery drops from 100% to 90% in under 20 minutes. The real issue is that the CPU, RAM, and GPU chipsets from a decade ago, when this device was released, are incredibly inefficient compared to even the cheapest low-spec phones available today. The only way this phone might last a full day of normal use is by using one of those questionable extended battery packs with a replacement back cover from AliExpress, which would give it a 5000-6000mAh capacity to consume all day. Meanwhile, my Galaxy A70 from 2019, with a much larger screen and a 4200mAh battery, easily lasts a full day and outperforms the Galaxy S5 in every way. The only chance of getting a full day’s use from a Galaxy S5 today is by installing an extremely stripped-down ROM, but even then, many modern apps are designed to detect rooted Android phones and won’t open, instead displaying a security warning. There are workarounds for this, but they’re unreliable and involve hours of flashing different kernels from questionable sources linked on XDA Developers.
