Robert Reed "relished" a part like this. Remember he was a "Dramatic" Actor who studied at Northwestern University (Megan Markle's Alma Mater), and he also studied In London, England at RADA (Royal Academy Of Dramatic Arts). Other alumni from the US were Ray McConnell (Ex Dr. Joe Martin) All My Children and Tamara Braun (Ex Reese All My Children) who was part of the first Lesbian Wedding on A US Soap. Other Alumni have been Joan Collins and Ralph Fiennes (Schindler's List, Maid In Manhattan). The Man who played Mr. Gardiner also played Hutch McKinney on Dallas who was fired by Jock Ewing for Stealing from him and was Pam's "Real" Father.

As a white man, I often have difficult times understanding how we are supposed to live in a haze like stuff like this wasnt extremely heinous and permanently damaging, life altering, and how people before me treated others like this. I'm not sure how to mentally deal with it. Im thankful for movies such as this, more grim, and dark, actual scenes that are difficult to watch, not even a percentage of how the actual experience would affect another individual, true history, although I've heard certain aspects of the film were fictitious.

Willard "Digger" Barnes confessed this to Miss Ellie on his Deathbed so that Jock wouldn't go to Prison.

While you are right that they probably didn't bother to take a look at real thumbscrews, I think it's not impossible to use those to inflict torture. I think I've seen thumbscrews before that were used in combination with tight-fighting metal rings that were put over the fingers before they were put into the vise. If the rings are thick enough and the right shape, you could use them with this thing. -- One thing I noticed when I saw historic torture implements in the Gottorf museum was how tight-fitting they were. One implement was referred to as "the scissors". You could put somebody's arms into it and then drag her around by it for others to ridicule and pelt that person -- in a similar way a pillory was used. The guide said that it was predominantly women who were humiliated that way, and I knew that people were smaller in past centuries, but to me it looked unrealistic that any adult's arms would fit into those holes. They looked small even for a 10-year-old child's. Addition: One thing I noticed is that a) many thumbscrews didn't limit themselves strictly to the thumbs but could be used to put in as many digits as you wanted and b) some didn't have an actual screw to tighten but a lever to pull. I suspect that they were meant to extract a confession by asking a question and then pulling the lever strongly but briefly, inflicting a shock of pain instead of pain that builds up, as you would with a screw. Or you could pull, hold, and give the person you are torturing the hope that you will let go if that person says what you want to hear.
