what equipment is needed to make multitrack on the mixer?
@DMKahn
@DMKahn 3 жыл бұрын
Well this mixer has built in inputs and outputs, but it's old - Firewire. There are USB mixers like the MTK22 that can do the same. Otherwise you need a multi channel interface and a bunch of 1/4" cables to send to and from the computer to the desk and back.

If i can figure out how to get multiple outs from my pc I will most likely be grabbing some of your stems. For some reason my Presonus 1818 keeps wanting to do strange things like combining 2 tracks down one output. I don't seem to be able to unpair the outs from a stereo pairs. I have recently bought an A&H digital mixer so i might try and get the outputs that way, but probably then into an analogue mixer . I watch dubs from Breadwinner, GDC Prince Fatty and you and really fancy having a go.

What if you paired the tracks strategically so when routed it would still work? But yeah, that’s frustrating for sure. Shoot me an email, i want to give you something to practice with.

What is your receipe for a good piano/guitar skank sound? Bit of distortion on the guitar? Very very short guitar chord with almost no pitch? What volume relationship etc ? Thanks
@DMKahn
@DMKahn 3 жыл бұрын
Precisely what you describe. A little bit of crunch on the guitar, very quick decay with little to no pitch, and piano playing at the same time. The piano is 10%-15% quieter. This is a general rule of thumb, and is just one way of getting that sound. You can play more note content or pitch as you Call it on the guitar too, as long as it doesn’t clash with the tone of the piano too much. Also I tend to EQ the guitar to have more treble, and the piano to have more mid range. Bless and thanks for the question
@willdatsun
@willdatsun 3 жыл бұрын
@@DMKahn awesome thankyou. Any timing offset? I was wondering whether to have the piano lag slightly. I know the sound I am trying to get but I rarely get it, perhaps because the guitarist is not very good at super staccato strums.
@DMKahn
@DMKahn 3 жыл бұрын
The guitar should be slightly before the piano, I’m talking about micro timing differences

@@DMKahn yeah that's probably my best bet, ableton panics sometimes warping large samples so assumed it might be that I've just been cutting what I need from them to loop for now Cheers for responding bro!

@@cainfoxfolkpunx in ableton there's an option you have to deselect, something like 'auto-warping for large samples' which is set to on by default. If left checked it cuts out any 'silence' at the start of the track, so if instruments arent all coming in at the same time it will throw of the timing

This is great! One question: do you have latency issues? I imagine that all the A/D conversions and monitoring (logic out -> board in -> board out -> logic in) come with a latency of some sorts. I am trying to build e setup for dubbing with an outboard mixer and fxs but I am afraid I will bump into latency issues, do you have any advice?
@JahServant
@JahServant 3 жыл бұрын
If you're running all the tracks through your board and using all outboard effects then there are no latency issues. You work according to what you hear as monitored in your mixer. If you're running sound in and out of the DAW and monitoring it after it's returned, or using DAW effects then there could be some latency. If the DAW is just running your tracks only, then there's no problem.
@DMKahn

Jah Servant said it perfectly.

@@JahServant Thanks a lot! I would have thought that when going back into the interface and the DAW would have created some phasing issues.
@JahServant
@JahServant 3 жыл бұрын
Generally you are just running your tracks out and then recording on a stereo track to capture your mix. That stereo mix may not line up perfectly with the stems, but it doesn’t need to anyways. Then you have your final dub to master.

Bless Khan, a newbie question: it seems when you open the delay on drums stem only the snare is dubbed. Not the kick and hats…is it only a “time question”” or do you map it in some way? thanks
@DMKahn
@DMKahn Жыл бұрын
You are on the right track in your thoughts. You can do it both ways, if all the drums are mapped to a single fader, by timing it just right… or by mapping the snare separately to it’s own channel and not have to worry so much about the timing or hi hat bleed
@simonedv4243
@simonedv4243 Жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for your answer! The “dubbing with Khan” video is a masterpiece: really funny and useful! So Is not possible to open delay only on snare even if all drums are mapped on a fader?
@DMKahn
@DMKahn Жыл бұрын
Well yes, if you’re very precise on your timing. If you send the delay at the exact time the snare hits then return the knob back to zero very quickly. In essence you will send the signal from whatever is coming into that channel. So if there’s hi hat at the same time (and there usually is), that will be sent as well. Hope that makes sense. Otherwise you need to send the snare to its own fader.
