My husband told me, "Anything worth doing, is worth doing poorly." For instance, if you're out of toothpaste and you brush your teeth with water, it's better than not brushing your teeth at all. That's really helped me, because I tend to be really hard on myself and think that I can't do something at all if I can't do it perfectly.

“It’s not a fear thing” … agreed. It’s a wisdom thing. I’m so proud that you are speaking out. IF we’re wrong, we can EAT our mistake. What will others do? God tells us to store for the ‘off season’, and if we are gardening biblically, we need to store enough for two years in that 7th year of allowing the ground to rest. I am currently canning meat from the freezer because I have concerns around our electrical grid. Wisdom tells is that the things that are happening now will roll over into next year - farmers unable to plant for a myriad of reasons, truckers unable to move food, etc. We need to hone our critical thinking skills to anticipate what might lie ahead in light of current circumstances. God is still on his throne, but we must be open to listening to his voice, not just praying without thought to a response. His sheep KNOW his voice ♥️

About 10 years ago I actually heard the words to prepare and that’s when I started. Little by little I have been able to build a pantry that I hope will sustain my family for a year. And mine isn’t out of fear either. It’s about honoring that inner voice and saying yes. I’m 73 and we were poor when I was growing up. I’ve eaten more boiled potatoes in my lifetime than I care to say. Cardboard in the bottom of the shoes and there was a hole to keep the rain out sort of thing. And my mother was a depression child so we were raised with that mentality so if suddenly the fast world slow down it would be a very familiar place to me if that makes sense. All I can say is to listen to your inner voice. It will never steer you wrong. But I’ve also been told to prepare to feed the 5000. So yes I prep for my family but I also prep to be able to help those in need. And everything I buy for my family or things that we eat on a daily basis. So that will never go to waste. And the extra bulk items that I buy for the “5000” can go to a food bank. Nothing will go to waste.

We have a saying around our house: “Meet anxiety with action” If something is bothering you and causing you stress, anxiety, fear, any kind of negative emotion, don’t let it consume you. Do something. Even if it’s something small, it will help calm you. It’s so sad to me that people, including you Jess, feel that they need to apologize in a way for feeling the way they feel about what is going on in todays world. Never apologize for how you are feeling. You are allowed to feel however you feel, however, it is your choice in how you act regarding that feeling. Being in my late 60's I have been in the high and low end of the money range. I learned very fast how to get the most out of my grocery budget. Now I'm helping my daughter and grandkids know how to stretch not just the budget, but their imagination for menu plan. We are on a very tight fixed budget, but we have a pantry and freezer that is enough to get us through months if needed. We make from scratch meals, bake our bread, make homemade snacks and desserts. Our teens help plan, cook, and store our food. Since they are homeschooled that's 24/7 feeding three very "healthy" eaters. We are not in "fear" mode, rather we are in "prepared" mode. Our neighbor is a prepper and shares as she doesn't want to waste what she can't use. our kids help her with her chickens and ducks, and fire wood. We have a wood stove for heat and our teens cut and season the wood that is needed. We didn't panic when the shelves were empty (except for toilet paper lol) as we knew it was time to go shopping from our shelves and freezers. We keep a list of EVERYTHING on shelves and in freezers. We also have our menu plan on phones to keep track of what we have fixed and what our ideas are for the remainder of the month. We don't always make what we planned, but we have the ingredients to change it up. Those lists are our base for knowing what we need to restock and what we can carry over, including condiments and basics like flour, sugar, coffee, tea etc. My daughter makes sure that the kids are involved in every part of the process, this is teaching them budgeting, cooking, menu planning and these are life skills that they are going to need to be independent adults.

Beautifully brave talk! Good for you! As a trained Chef and someone that has known hunger, don't forget some extra of your favorite spices. People who are hungry like things to taste good too! This is so do-able. And no matter where you live find out some information on wild foods around you! It took me years battling two different weeds in my gardens to learn that they were edible, tasted better than some greens I struggled to grow and were more densely packed with nutrients! Lambs Quarter is one, wild amaranth is the other. And don't forget stinging nettles! Extremely high in nutrition! You can blanch and freeze, can or dry. If your budget is low, look to see if you have wild foods! Creator never gives us more than we can handle. Don't apologize Jess, you needed to share this. You were lead. Thank you! As a long-time "prepper" -granddaughter of depression era - I have been trying to encourage my son to store food for his family. Although they usually eat organic, natural, etc [which is good, but usually very expensive] , I have told him to store some just basic foods and not be so worried about minutia.. My advice to him is to stock "tummy-fillers" and if they end up not needing that food then next year they can donate it to a very grateful food pantry and go on with life as they know it. He agrees, and I'm hoping he is following my advice! I also gave him a greenstalk and am trying to help him learn to grow some food, a challenge being 1200 miles away.

My church recommends that everyone have at least a three month food storage supply in case of natural or financial disaster. I think it's great advice, and though I'm a student right now with very limited storage space, I try to have a more substantial pantry than just a few bags of instant whatever. It makes sense.

Jess, this is good advice. Being prepared is wise in any case! When I was little, we were in the midst of fearing a possible nuclear war. My parents started a small garden and drove two hours to a farmers market where we bought fresh vegetables and fruits in large quantities on a bi-weekly basis. I learned to can and prepare food when I was in second grade! Our basement was full of canned goods and we had a freezer full of meat. Of course, we didn’t have that nuclear war, but we were struck with hardship that was almost as difficult. My father went blind unexpectedly, my siblings were in a terrible accident and four members of our family of six were in the hospital at the same time. It was a devastating blow, financially snd emotionally. But, because my parents prepared for that nuclear war, we had food, clothing snd shelter. It’s good to be prepared! Thank you, Jess!

Coming from a third world I am well aware of my modern conveniences. For the longest time it was handwashing clothes and letting dry on a line. Dirt floors. Gardening and livestock. No electricity or running water. No AC. I am blessed to be here where I have those things now. This is why I am not above working hard and putting up with discomfort. My nephews on the other hand would combust if they can't game or be inside a cool house during the summer. Even ice was a luxury back in those days! I think this is the season of revisiting the art of growing our own food. We’ve had a good run, but we should all have gardening in our list of life skills. Some tips: 1: Get 5 gallon food safe buckets (most buckets are food safe) with a food lid. 2: Dollar tree sells food safe storage containers for $1.25 3. If you can afford, food seal, but don’t let your freezer become the place where “good intentions go to die” 😉 4. Herbs in your window sill. Add herbs to your food for extra nutrition 5. Compost if you have space. I have not done this yet, but when done right it won’t smell, is not expensive, and it’s how you can learn to make your own rich soil for nutrient rich foods!

Just picked celery out of my garden that overwintered and I plan to dehydrate. I am in my 70’s and do believe as you do about food preparation and having enough to share!!

Thank you for creativity, I wasn’t aware of the fact that you could re-can already canned items. Thank you, I’m going to look into this! Continue to strive for excellence, and being creative. Wishing everyone peace, happiness, and sustainability!

Bravo Jess. Your honesty and genuine nature are always well received. Gotta say, I’ve been waiting for you to bring this topic to your vlog. So many look up to you that not addressing food insecurity in todays climate might give some a false sense of security. Everyone needs to learn how to be more self sufficient, now. I appreciate your candor on canning. I’ll just say that the national center for home food preservation website is FREE and gives TESTED, SAFE instructions and recipes for both water and pressure canning. That said, once a new canner knows the “rules”, and why they are the “rules” (botulism kills), your kitchen, your family, your choice on what and how you put things in jars. I’ve been watching you for two years now. My garden has quadrupled. I can, dehydrate and now freeze dry. I feel way more prepared and secure about my future, come what may, in the next few years. You are a blessing. Thank you, Jess!!

Thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you for talking about this. It is a serious topic and needs to be discussed. It’s not fear, it’s common sense. And never apologize for that! There will always be someone negative, who has nothing smart to say but complains when someone else says something. Keep up the good work and advice, we’re all looking forward to them. In the 2 years I have been following you, you have helped me grow as a person, as a gardener and as a mother. Thank you!

It’s just prudent to have food and supplies put back. It’s also economical.......when ketchup is $1 a bottle I buy 12. That way I shop my own shelves where all items are on sale🙂 I understand the concern lots of homesteading KZbinrs have in not wanting to perpetuate a spirit of fear. But encouraging people to watch the times and to be wise will help stem the fear. Thanks for stepping out and talking on a subject that for some reason is being villainized. Scripture calls us to go to the ant who puts food by for the winter but Scripture also warns us not to trust in our full barns. Thank you for encouraging us to prepare as we trust in the Lord🙂

YEEESSSS... "Just be lead..." I love that statement so much!!! It is exactly the way I am living my life; more so these days than I ever have... listening to the Holy Spirit speak through my heart. And it is precisely giving me the peace I need in my soul. Thank you Jess... I love your videos and perspective so much.

I just love your honesty and imperfect way in preparing in wisdom for the urgent times we live in. The Bible tells us that a wise man sees trouble and prepares. Couldn't be any more clear and simple than that 😊🙏

Jess, you have always presented things in a very well thought out manner. You have been very careful how you teach things and I appreciate that. I started a channel to teach people about canning and gardening (which I need to do a better job at lol). I realize how hard it is to do that clearly an accurately. You do that very well and I appreciate your channel. God bless you ❤

I absolutely love your videos. My husband and I moved into our very first home with our son and daughter about a year and a half ago. We are planting our very first garden this season (on a super tight budget) I am so excited to finally get started planting! Our dream is to one day have our own homestead and I am so excited to start learning how to grow my own food where we are now. Ive had my kids out in the garden almost every day with me now, and I believe they are almost as excited as I am. I truly appreciate all of the wisdom you share, all of the tips and tricks, and all of the mistakes, I cant wait to make some of my own. Thank you so much for continuing to share your journey. I cannot wait to one day be where you are in an established homestead, you’ve given me so much inspiration. Thank you.

I grew up in a house that, out of monetary necessity, had a pretty stocked pantry and the routine was to shop only the sales at the store and plan meals from what was on hand. And I’m a 90s baby, I’m not old!! It was a shock to grow up and see that people didn’t typically have that.
@Smacsek2 жыл бұрын
90s baby here too and I think one of the hardest things to wrap my head around in early 2020 was that people don't have things to throw together a basic meal with? Like, not even chicken, rice and a veggie on hand? I realize that I live by myself, but the whole 1 pack of meat didn't phase me that much because there was meat in the freezer and side dishes/ingredients in the pantry

I adore UK allotment gardening and follow several accounts. I've often heard them use a term for the lean months in the winter garden...they call it "the hungry gap", and prepare for that time during the bountiful harvest. I want to thank you for touching on this topic because we need people to share food storage skills, and we need to learn those things without being consumed by the element of fear. (our HR freeze dryer has finally shipped so I'm hoping you'll be sharing some freeze drying in the near future)

I started building up food storage in 2020 as the ‘illness’ was spreading. It is SO REASSURING to know that I have the things I need and will use in the future. It’s insurance and it’s an investment nowadays. Thanks for sharing!!!

Thank you for sharing Jess! Too many folks think it's great, but it's actually faith in trusting in the leading by the Spirit to not only prepare for your family, but for your community as well. Be led, be wise, be prepared. Also, Rainbow's are a sign of the promises of God and He is Blessing you and Jeremiah.

When I was a kid, some almost 60 years ago, we always grew a garden. my grandparents only had a tiny yard and grew what they could. I always thought it was fun. didn't realize it was actually a necessity. We would can so much applesauce on the years that the apples were plentiful because it seemed like the next year or two would be leaner.

Jess - Fear thing? NO! But be prepared for emergencies! I’ve never worried about extended power outages or needing to stay home for an extended period of time because I know that I have what my family will need. It’s not fear - it’s peace of mind!

I love your approach and your mindset about this! I've been on a food security journey for a couple of years, and we recently moved to a bigger house with a bigger yard; I am so excited about the opportunities that gives me! But I am also so thankful that I found you and took your advice to turn my waiting room into a classroom while I was living in the city in a smaller house. It gives me confidence that I will now use my new space in the best way possible and thrive in it. Thank you!

I have appreciated your preparedness classroom sessions. My family and I decided to invest in a small high tunnel this season and our garden is doing great, and that's because of you. I have watched your channel for years and it gets me so excited to grow my own food, and this year growing some flowers as well, because we also need the beauty. But you have been such an inspiration and we began with building a preparedness pantry a year ago and it helps with that feeling of security. That things will be ok if it falls apart again, and it looks like it will. I was at the grocery store today and I seen parents loading up on diapers and wipes, and any formula that was available, and it truly broke my heart to have to see parents worry about feeding their babies and have that fear of not knowing when more will be available. All we can do is pray for God to see us through, and prepare. That you Jess for always providing that education we need to feel secure. God bless. 🙏❤️
