This is such a beautiful poem from the diwan of Sayyidina Ali, that describes the self talk (hadith-nafs) between the malaaiki and bahimi nafs. It portrays the bahimi nafs as a bank of sabr, that the malaiki nafs needs to beg from in times when the carnal desires are at an all time high and fulfilling those desires is prohibited. The malaaiki nafs begs the bahimi nafs to lend it some sabr that it can use to resist the carnal desires (shahwa) and promises to repay it when it finds itself in the context in which acting out on the shahwa is permitted by Allah. This reminds me of the hadith of Sayyidina Ibn Abbas in which it was said "in sabr is great good" thereby giving the impression that sabr is like a treasure chest or a bank that has wealth. May Allah make our malaiki nafs so rich, and our bahimi nafs so poor, that the bahimi nafs is the one who begs from the malaiki nafs and not the other way around.
