I've been doing genealogy since I was 13yo. I would skip school to go to the Family History center in Santiago, Chile. Now, I'm 36 and I'm still hooked. I just love it so much!!!

Even though I have been working on genealogy for 17 years, this methodology is a fantastic way of recreating the wheel, so to speak! I have had many questions about how to properly use Family Search and with this conference this time (2023), I am learning more ways to use it. The 5 steps are wonderful to start over making sure the records I have are accurate to that person. Thank you for the three presenters and the written ideas on the white board. Great class I enjoyed so much!

This is why Reddit is helpful to me - you can throw out a question and people help in literally seconds and minutes. Others point out the obvious issues, or give ideas.

GIRL SAME!!! To the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints: Food for thought. I'm 24 this year and I was inspired by my Dad who works for familysearch to nourish my love for family history. Y'all are already doing a great job trying to reach younger audiences! A word of caution, maybe take a deep breath aaaand release. I'm 24, I am disabled, I do my best but your wonderful workers are working too fast for us to keep up with! I'm so grateful for you, and because I want to push for change, (not as a prophet, but as an individual), I would encourage you, from one morally upright person to another: if you are trying to reach a young audience, you will learn to speak to a young audience. if you are trying to reach an old audience, you will reach an old audience. I encourage you to prayerfully continue your efforts to reach a universal audience, as part of the building of Zion.

A month late in seeing this lesson. My question is, and a few more than 10 words. When looking for documents on one ancestor, should I be looking at the person closest to my target ancestor for documents that may only be initially found under that closest relative? If that makes sense. Sometimes this is what I have found to be the case during my searches. Loved this lesson, it will help me teach my friend

My dad wrote a note on the back of a family group sheet that said that a women's husband's parents had died when he was young, and he ended up living with the neighbors, who were his wife's family. I looked and looked for him in census records thinking he would be there with her family. Couldn't find him. I finally found him in a guardianship record when he was 17, taken in by his wife's family. So, they had the info right, but the time wrong

Finding a birth record for someone when the court house burned down. I know the date and place and his name. He was born in 1900. The county court house burned down. I was able to get his sister's birth certificate from the same place. She was born in 1897 before the court house fire. So how do I find my grandfather's birth certificate?

I am so sorry to hear that you went through this. Have both you and your younger sister taken an AncestryDNA test? That will show if you are full siblings (with the same two parents), half siblings (with one parent in common and another unrelated parent), or 3/4 siblings (with one parent in common and the other parent are close relatives).
