Much better. Good job Dave. I'd like to add a tip that's easier for me on doing the reef knot. Mind you I'm no expert. But if you form a bend in one line and come up through the loop/bend and behind then back down over and through the bend you'll get the Reef Knot with less fuss. Similar to the way you do the sheet bend. Again, Thanks Dave for all you do. I've been following you for years and have really learned a lot from you. Love you brother.

Tying a reef knot that way makes it easy to dress the knot exactly as you want it.

That is one of the ways to tie a Thief knot so always make sure the short ends are on the same side. I believe it is not as strong as a Reef so be careful with that method.

@@benthere8051 Try the larks head method you can do fun things with it, like slide to tighten and then turn into a reef.

That double fisherman's knot is a great one to tie to form an adjustable neck lanyard for a knife or ferro rod. You can pull the knots together to make a big loop that fits easily over your head and then you can pull the knots away from each other to shorten the loop and draw the knife up closer to your neck to keep it from dangling and swinging around too much.

Dave had a great fisherman's tutorial...If you wanna make something more permanent with thinner rope, follow the same steps but wrap up twice and down once making a triple fisherman's knot. I'm guessing it's more secure because rope manufacturers recommend the triple fisherman's with small rope like 5mm
@benthere80513 жыл бұрын
I use a double fisherman's knot on my Boonie hat strap to cinch it as tight and secure as I want. I like your sheet bend example and will use it to very securely attach a tarp to a rope. That is the high point of this series for me - I learned something new. I like to tie a reef knot like I tie a sheet bend - you don't have to remember the sequence and you can dress the knot exactly like you want with no trouble. It is very interesting to note how the good knots are symmetrical like the Zepplin, the constrictor knot, the reef knot, the fisherman's knot, the water knot, and many others. There seems to be goodness, truth, and beauty in symmetry. Thank you for this series of videos - knots turn a rope into an invaluable tool.

Great stuff. FYI, in the UK the 'water knot' is known as the 'tape knot'. As eluded to in the video, it's great for webbing tape and was used by climbers/mountaineers to complete slings and extenders long before manufacturers began stitching webbing tape together.

Really enjoying the rope clinic Dave. If I may add, I'm no expert, but I believe the sheet bend is more reliable when both tails of rope are on the same side

Loving the series, I lost count anyway so I don't care which part this is LOL. When I was in the Army a lifetime ago I'd tie a knot in something, or in civilian life afterwards and someone would ask if the Army taught me that....Nope, Boy Scouts back in the early 70's! Added a few along the way, including some here. Great series.

I like to take some paracord on my very long plane flights to/from Asia. Improving muscle memory by practicing knot tying is a very good way to pass the time on 30+ hour flights. TSA's machines can't detect rope so it's a toy with no consequence.

The fishermans bend work really well on the same or similar thickness rope. I really like that double version so might start using that instead of the single. The water knot shines in strap and it the only time I use it. I cannot think of a reason to add the Zeppelin to my use a lot knots so what do people use it for? Ok, this a bit geeky. The bowline bend runs the risk of forming a thief knot over a reef knot. It is my understanding that the Thief is not as strong as the Reef so would this be a problem? I do not think so however maybe someone knows if they ever tested it. Dave, as a last video or videos could you do for the ones that have it, other ways of tying them. There are at least 3 ways to tie a reef knot, the larks head version is really useful I have found. Plus both the bowline and the double figure of eight have hanging off a cliff one hand tying methods. Also alternatives to the knots as apart from tying my shoes I really do not use the reef knot however the surgeons knot gets a lot of use. Never really use the clove hitch however the constrictor knot works.
