ROR: Pac Man World: 20th Anniversary (PS1 Vs. GBA)

Finally, more Remake or Rebreak! ROR is a segment where I examine the classics of the past and compare them with subsequent significant rereleases to see whether they hold up today, with a special emphasis on whether and how well those releleases improve upon the original experience.
This time we're looking at the PS1 Platforming classic, 20th Anniversary: Pac Man World. Originally released on PlayStation in 1999, this game was later remade on the Game Boy Advance in 2004. No, the Game Boy Advance is not like the version of Pac Man World 2 on GBA, which has its own levels and whatnot.
As someone who played the second game first and didn't play the first one until almost a decade later, how does the game stack up today? Is there a reason that the Game Boy Advance is largely unknown? All these questions and many more addressed in this exciting new episode of Remake or Rebreak!

Remake or Rebreak Scores:
1- Rebreak: Fails to resurrect the same quality standard as the original due to incompetent design, technical failures, etc. A virtually worthless remake/port overall.
2- Re-Meh: Not as good as the original, but a relatively competent recreation that is still very playable. Additionally, a Re-Meh may not address the original's salient issues or fail to add anything meaningful.
3- Remake: As good or even slightly better than the original, but not necessarily worth playing if you already own that version. Typically adds some new content or fixes salient issues with the original.
4- Replace: A remake/port that changes, fixes, and adds so much that it renders the original virtually obsolete. A Replace not only faithfully recreates the original, but fixes most (if not all) of the original's issues and adds a sizable amount of new content.

the remaining 5% comes from completing marathon mode where you play through every galaxian maze in a row in one set of lives. its hard as balls unless your profile has a ton of lives on it. also thanks for the shout-out at the end, it put a big grin on my face

i completed it and i had like 759 when i started the marathon (now i have 1255 and got them by the galaxians in the machine) so 20 lives are enough if u will complete it i can't see how much progress it gives because my game is broken and the percent says 265672 percent complete when i destroy tocman (i play on psvita and zig zag on psvita is very fast) i also have the cutscenes but that doesnt fix the percent number error

Awesome video! I think the longer format really suits RoR, since it allows you to get much more in detail over what the game differences are and why you feel the way you do about them. Can't wait for the next one! You make these reviews interesting even though I've never played most of them. Also I really have to commend you for being so committed to playing the games on their original hardware. Not a lot of folks would go through the both of doing not just that but also getting appropriate capture hardware, so it's pretty amazing! I've never really understood why people seem to shit on linear 3D platformers, Crash in particular. To me I see it like an obstacle course where there's a new challenge waiting for you around the next corner, and it helps make the games stand out from the crowd. I see it as focusing the game over the rather aimless feeling I get when playing most open-world titles. (also if you ever do the N. Sane Trilogy as a RoR, please please PLEASE mention that while the slipping is an issue and ruins levels like The High Road, there's also actually a larger window on jumping OFF the edge of a platform as well, especially when sliding OR sliding whilst Crash Dashing)

The Crash 1 remake might actually show up on this marathon. I'm still debating it. The new controls really don't work for that game's level design, especially without Crash's slide jump to ease longer jumps. What I've played of the Crash 2 remake fares much better and I hardly notice the control differences.

Funnily enough, a lot of the more egregious issues of the original (and GBA for that matter) were fixed up pretty well in the REPAC version. -True analog control rather than being stuck in 8 directions. -All the bosses are revamped for the better, with almost all of them having unique phases that change up the flow of the fight and change things up. Clown Prix being the exception, but even that got improved with a better camera and a more interesting course. Krome Keeper even got fully reworked into an actual fight this time, and a damn fun one too. -Proper level completion tracking, mainly pertaining to scores, letters, keys, and Mazes. -Chrome pellets actually respawn this time, making some levels way easier to 100%. Also with that last 5%, you likely didn't miss anything in the levels. Completing Marathon Mode will unlock the final few percents.

It's obviously much harder in the original due to needing a million points to get it, but Re-pac lowered the amount to about 750k-800k, meaning as long as you get all the fruit doors in a run and get at least one 4-ghost combo in a maze, you should get it no problem.

I can confirm that Super Mario 64 DS feels great with the circle pad. But the transition into the directions is so smooth that you barely notice its D-pad origin. However, games like Rayman DS or Gex 2/3 feel very clunky with analog controls because there is no transition at all. Makes you jitter your way through the levels.

in the gba version it's anyway due to hardware limitations, despite the tiny cartridge, if you play on the emulator, it's likely to have the noise, but that's just the game, all gba games, the audio sounds great, yeah the way to remove a lot to port in gba.

Rayman vs Rayman Advance would be neat, though I should definitely stress that the DOS, Saturn, PS1, and Jaguar versions are all substantially different from each other, despite being released around the same time. The PS1 is the most well-known version.

A better comparison would be with the DOS version, all the versions of Rayman released after his original release (that include Rayman Advance, Rayman DSi and Rayman Classic on iOS and Android) are based on the MS-DOS port (and to be fair, the PS1 version had many differences compared to all the other releases, even compared to the Saturn port).

Advance wasn't really based on DOS, it was basically its own cut-down version. As for version difference PS1 is the most well-known and seems to be somewhat of a standard. It was released first and has the full OST, including drum tracks. Saturn is slightly different with a few new/changed/removed graphical assets, and jaguar is cut-down. DOS is somewhat gimped but I would call that a port, not a remake.

The GBA is based on the PC port, just look at the placement of the cages, it's the same between the PC version and the Advance remake (minus one or two moved because of the cut levels), when it was different on PS1 and Saturn; the songs are based on the original PC version (it wasn't before Rayman Forever on GoG that the PC players had almost all the music from the PS1 version) and a lot of the glitches on GBA were already on the PC port. If you want to talk about the original, the Jaguar version is the correct one, the PS1 version was only a last-minute decision (and they did a freaking good job at porting the OST on the console, it's sooo freaking good!) (Funny fact : the Sonic Gems Collection version of Sonic CD and the iOS remake are not based on the Sega CD version, but on the 1995 PC version, as we can see with slighty different water effects and the US OST)

The original CD release of the PC port had most of the soundtrack from PS1, just a bunch of tracks were lumped together and played in sequence throughout the world. Rayman Gold cut out most of the OST to make room for designer along with the original game, and the GoG release was Rayman Gold and missing the same amount of the OST. However, in the GoG version they changed it so that you can simply download the rest of the OST and put it in the files. As for cage placement, I guess you might be correct there (I won't fact check it). Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the developers didn't port it to PS1 last-minute, they developed it alongside the Jaguar version for a decent duration of the development cycle. And finally, which glitches are you talking about that made it onto both PC and GBA but not other versions?

To get 100% in the original Pac-Man World, you have to complete the Maze Marathon, which requires you to unlock all the Galaxian doors and complete the mazes. Those mazes become unlocked in the Mazes section of the title menu and you press the circle button to activate the Maze Marathon, which requires all of the mazes to be unlocked. Completing the Maze Marathon gives you that final 5% and unlocks the gallery which is basically just concept art for the game

I'm scatlink sean's brother and I'm doing a 100% walkthrough on Pac-Man World. When I decided to actually beat the game a few months back, I beat the final boss with all letters and mazes complete and thought "Shouldn't I have 100 percent?" But then I figured I need to do the marathon. Then I beat Toc-Man again and then I got 100%, but you can't keep it on your file as it doesn't save after the final boss.

If you play on the Japanese version, you don't need to do Marathon Mode to achieve 100%. You just need to collect all the letters, complete all the mazes, and beat every level.

Pac-Man World 3 for the DS is awful. just when you think it can be good since handheld can do 3d, it messes it up with gimmicks. you know the charge/run in place that you can do since Pac-Man World one, you have to touch the screen to do it then quickly go to the buttons to change tragectory (it sucks if you're right or left handed either way in my opinion). anyways i just needed to get that off my chest, sorry for the rant. Not really, for as finite as our time on this earth is, we've got to make it enjoyable some how. Sure, we could be spending time doing productive things, but what is productive really? Yeah, we could be working to better the world, or our selves, but at the end of the day, if you're not happy then what does any of that matter. @@JPAgain except, no it isnt. nearly every flaw in this review has been addressed. the metal powerups respawn, the power pellets are buffed, theres a flutter move to save you when you need it (and an easy mode that gives you near-infinite flutter as well as adding some blue blocks to help a new player), theres a checklist readily available, and the family members are optional: fail to save some, and the original ending plays (with the ones you failed to save getting released anyway) save the family, and a much sweeter ending plays. yeah i dont get "remaster" from this. theres enough changes for this to be considered a remake.

I need to break it to you simply that the game has a bug where all copies complete up to 95%. This is because of a scrapped level that was cut from the game, and forgot to patch it up in later versions. It might be a glitch recurring to said scrapped level, and personally I don't find it bad, but honestly it does ruin a completionist.

say what you want about this game but i played the everliving shit out of it as a kid on my ps1 it will forever be my childhood game along with rugrats search for reptar and the re pac remake was a day 2 preorder for me i still have my original ps1 copy but its super beat up and some of the audio tracks are corrupted or something as certain playstations wont play the game at all some will but the audio tracks will play in the wrong sections (i.e buccaneer beach playing during the slot machine bonus game) overall i cant stop watching the repac trailer august 26th cant get here soon enough

Gamecube Games in general are hard to find unfortunately. I go to Retro Shops, Thrift Shops Pawn Shops and I see many PS2 Games and to a slightly lesser extent OG Xbox Games but I rarely see Gamecube Games anymore.

Good ROR, dude. Me personally, everyone I knew who had a PS1 had this game back when I was a kid. I didn't play it myself until I got into PS1 collecting in my teens. Pac Man World is one I haven't played in years, but I remember it just being decent. I did like Ms. Pac Man's Maze Madness a lot more, though. I always liked how the maze structure had some puzzle platforming elements in that particular game. It just felt more like it knew what it wanted to be. Something that had its own identity.

I had this (and still have, in fact) game when I was a kid. One of my first video games in fact. I have a ton of nostalgia of it as a result, though I do remember it taking me months to beat, and that the isometric camera angle made it awkward to play at times.
