Rory is irritating. What Dean is saying is true: Rory always says "I don't want to talk about it" when people try to help her with the breakup or she tries to avoid him and act like a drama queen instead of reflecting on the situation or confronting him. Maybe she didn't feel comfortable yet to address the problem, but that does not mean that she should make the breakup seem like Dean's fault when she was the one who didn't say "I love you too" (although I understand she didn't know how to react at that time). Now the whole town is against him when he did nothing to deserve it. After the breakup, Rory fought with her friend and her mother over really stupid things while Dean did not make it a big of a deal even though he was extremely hurt by her.

Rory is dramatic. She should have just said that I didn’t want to say I love you to Dean and that is why he broke up with me. He had a right to feel hurt that she didn’t say it back to him but he was immature in breaking up with her for it. She has a right to be hesitant about saying her feelings about him. She acted like it was something bigger than it actually was and that made everyone think it was something bad. Lorelei shouldn’t make her feel like she has to say I love you to him if she isn’t sure how to feel about him.

I was happy that Dean defended himself after Lorelai verbally attacked him like that. I would have done the same thing in his position. When I watched the show the second time around, I found it annoying that the whole town ‘demonised’ him like that. The first time around, that all somehow passed me by.

I can understand that Dean wanted to have his feelings reciprocated, but I also think he kind of overreacted when he didn’t get the response he wanted. I mean they were 16, they had only been together 3 months, and he was Rory’s first boyfriend. Rory is also at fault here. Not for not saying I love you back (it’s understandable if she wasn’t ready/didn’t know how to respond). She’s at fault for not giving anyone any information on why the breakup occurred. She literally gives no one any context about what happened and avoids talking about it. I get that it’s a tough issue to talk about, but because she never spoke up she ended pushing the people she cared about away and letting everyone jump to conclusions about what happened.

Rory always does this. She always says, “I don’t want to talk about it,” whenever she knows she screwed up. When she slept with Dean while he was married, when she quit Yale and her life fell apart, and pretty much whenever it was her fault, but she had been raised with the mindset of being a “good kid” and I guess it gave her a borderline narcissistic mentality. Not that she was a bad person, her mistakes were pretty normal, she just couldn’t accept that they were her fault. Even when she missed her mother’s graduation to visit Jess in New York, she literally said that she had a stroke and it couldn’t have been her because she was a good person (of course she didn’t mean literally, but it shows she really couldn’t believe it was her own fault). It’s ok to make mistakes, we all do, but to think you’re incapable of it? That was where she got lost. A lot of this came from the endless praises by her mother and the town and school, she was pretty much a burnout gifted kid who couldn’t accept her own flaws causing her to develop a narcissistic mindset and bring pain to herself and those around her.
