Mal is just talent. He doesn’t invest his time & energy offscreen the way an owner should. I’m assuming he & Rory have a shared ownership agreement. That model didn’t work for the JBP, because Joe put up all the money & did the work, but if that if distribution of labor & resources works for R&M then great.
