I knew Rory pretty well: first saw him in 1968 at the Woburn Abbey Festival - and then 37 times after that. I took him to supper, played his guitar hall a dozen times and spent many happy hours with him. He also played saxophone, harmonica, mandolin, slide guitar and was a great songwriter. My daughter Isobel Thatcher (new single Wings on KZbin) met bass man Gerry McAvoy last year in London and they had a great chat about Rory and his songs. Thanks for putting him on your show. He was the finest all-round musician I’ve ever known and the kindest, politest man imaginable. RIP dear Rory, 1995.

Thanks for checking out Rory! This is really just the tip of the iceberg of Rory's spectacular musical abilities. He was a self taught multi-instrumentalist (guitar, mandolin, harmonica, alto sax and more), a brilliant songwriter and a great, unique vocalist. His catalog is so diverse encompassing electric and acoustic blues, jazz, folk, and a bit of funk. I've seen so many performers and no one comes remotely close to seeing Rory Gallagher live, in terms of music, it was life changing for me.

I spent most of my childhood listening to Rory Gallagher, because it was mostly all my dad played around the house and on car journeys (along with some Cream, Groundhogs, Pink Floyd etc). I couldn't appreciate him as a child, but he's always on my playlist as an adult. I remember the day he passed away. My dad came home from work with tears in his eyes and said he'd just heard on the radio that Rory had died. It was one of the few times I've seen him cry. It was like we had lost a family member. That's how deep Rory meant to his fans 😢

Saw Rory live in 1979, 3+ hours concert, he was unique, so genuine! The medication he took for years for his fear of flying ruined his liver, he literally performed until he dropped, was playing in Amsterdam when he collapsed on stage due to liver failure. He had the transplant but caught MRSA in the hospital ward and died in 1995 at 47.

A live Rory show was amazing.Rory started on the showband scene where bands would have 6 or more members they played for hours in ballrooms with up to 3000 people dancing .Showbands played anything from Irish traditional through country and rock and roll to the hits of the day. Showbands were driving all over Ireland.,a band could travel from cork to Portrush a round trip of 600 miles in a van or coach ! For a young Rory check out the Fontana showband and the song slow down in 1964. You know it's Rory in seconds with the vocal and his playing

I saw Rory six times and on one occasion actually met him and his long term bass player Gerry McAvoy. Two more humble, modest men you couldn't meet. Rory was a proud Irishman and a great ambassador for his Country who left us all a great legacy with his albums and, with me my memories. His death from complications following a liver transplant robbed us of a genius and a genuinely decent, humble man.

Probably one of the most underrated guitarist. Irish Rory knew how to rock with the best. He was one of Eric Clapton's idol and influences. Rory made up for no other band playing there as he was just amazing and all that was required to satisfy a blues lovers taste. I still listen to his music and never tire of it. Harri, Rory played on Jerry Lee Lewis' "London Sessions" album in 1973. You heard correctly. Rory, due to ill health and some bad career decisions, should have been a much bigger star. After a star-making performance at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970, he was approached by Led Zep's manager, Peter Grant, for a management contract but declined, as earlier misadventures with previous managers made him very wary of having anyone but his brother manage him. Nice debut on the channel. Thanks Miss B and Harri.

Rory’s decision to go with his brother Donal, rather than Peter Grant ensured Rory being in charge. He was stubborn about some things, like not releasing singles. Rory was known in the states because he toured here relentlessly for decades, but it wasn’t possible to become a household name in the states without radio exposure. Maybe you can call that a bad career move, but Rory was his own man.

In fact the 4 tunes he plays on are coincidentally the best tunes on the Killers London Sessions LP. Rorys nightmare was to have a big hit single. He fought tooth and nail against it his whole career. He did not want to be sucked into the "cloak and dagger limousine lifestyle" of rock stars.

Thank you! Rory was absolutely amazing and 2-3 hour performances were the norm for him. He lived for playing in front of an audience and fed off of their energy. Please check out some of his other videos, such as "Do You Read Me?" from 1979's Rock Goes to College. For his early stuff, "Sinner Boy" or "What's Going On?" with his first band Taste at the 1970 Isle of Wight festival shows his mad skills at the age of 23. A good quality video of a later piece is "Don't Start Me Talkin'" Cologne 1990. At 42, he didn't have the same high energy to run all over the stage, but his stage presence is still amazing and his guitar skills mature. Please explore more of his wonderful catalog and introduce Rory to a new generation.

I was lucky enough to see Rory many times in the late 60s and early 70s, both with Taste and with his eponymous band after Taste broke up. He was an amazing live performer - the energy went on for the whole gig, often two hours or more! He would play his beat up Strat, use a Telecaster for fantastic slide guitar, sometimes an old Gretsch as well. He could also play mandolin and beautiful acoustic guitar as well as saxophone. Try “Bullfrog Blues” or “In your town” for slide playing or “Wave myself goodbye” for acoustic (with guest Vincent Crane from Atomic Rooster on piano). Never saw a below par performance once in all those years - he loved playing for his fans and gave it his all. A quiet gentleman off stage and an influence on Brian May, who spoke very highly of him.

I'm in my sixties and Rory was the soundtrack of my life. Saw him live several times and met him once. It's wonderful to see somebody discovering Rory for the first time.

I'm so glad that you finally did a reaction on my favourite guitarist of all time. I have seen him live a couple of times and it was like nothing else just pure love for his music. I was deeply saddened when I heard of his death but he was sick for quite some time and it was so sad when I saw him last in 1991 he wasn't just the same although he did some good shows after that before his death. You will find many great performances here on YT one I want to mention is "Do you read me" from Rock goes to college

Harri, after you're done with Rory's solo career, you should look into his first official first band TASTE. I recommend any footage taken from the Isle Of Wight Festival 1970. Powerful trio of blues, progression, hard rock and even jazz! Enjoy!

The best Irish guitarist EVER !!! I was lucky enough to have seen Rory twice here in the U.S. and his stage energy, as well as his guitar skills, are unmatched. I would recommend checking out the live video of Shadow Play and the Live performance of Bullfrog Blues on The Old Grey Whistle Test. 🔥🎸🎶✌️

You mentioned Jerry Lee Lewis. To see both him and Rory playing together would have been a wild, crazy, awesome show and experience!

There are no other members in that band, only Rory Gallagher, Gerry McAvoy (Bass) and Ted McKenna (Drums). Rory played the longest time as a 3-piece, earlier he had a Keyboarder too, i.e. Lou Martin during 1974 Irish Tour. Rory for me was not only one of the greatest guitar players of all time, he was THE performer. He was no rockstar-like snob, when you watch his concerts, you will see him climb off the stage, interact with the audience and he loved it. As the old german music lover i am....Rory and his worn-out Stratocaster....the best Ireland gave to the world! 🤘

After a concert, I was asked out for a drink by two gentlemen, Rory and his brother Donal. Took a shine to my sister and I. And believe me. After he opened his gig with this very song, the place erupted. I was so bowled over by Rory's music during this era, and his concert that nothing has bettered it since. The energy during the gig was amazing, it lasted for over 2 hours. There were no barriers between fans and the band, afterwards, my younger self met Rory and I fell head over heels for this unassuming shy gentleman. Presently, I have been, and have been for some now time writing a book that includes an up-close observation, of meeting Rory Gallagher and with that, I give a snapshot of his lifestyle on the road. Recently, contacted his brother, who remembers me, and has no issue with my account. However, since then, the book concept has morphed. I hope to finish the project soon. But for now, folks you will have to wait just a little while longer.

I do hope your book is coming along splendidly. Your story sounds so lovely, and evocative of a much more innocent time in Ireland. God bless your path.

@@zepmaid Just what I needed to hear. Thank you. Aside, I am having a rotten time at the mo and my writing has come to a halt for now. But I hope to be writing again soon. It has taken me decades to open up about meeting Rory and what happened that night and a long time to write it down. In doing so, I have felt so many emotions and come to terms with much more but now I love my story which is the best rock 'n' roll fairy tale ever. Written through my youthful eyes. I knew at the time Rory was a major artist but he was such a humble man it was easy to forget. He actually teased me something chronic, at first I thought he did not like me....After he saw my reaction he burst into laughter, and I was not pleased. So he laughed even louder. Though, I did not meet Rory in Ireland. I met him in England. You are correct of course. The era which I speak of was so much kinder and innocent. We just loved music and had that in common.
