Rory Stewart breaks down 'rotten state' of UK politics | LBC analysis

Iain Dale speaks to bestselling author and podcaster Rory Stewart, with one week to go till the general election.
On Rishi Sunak he told Iain Dale:
"I thought that he was somebody who was very, very confident in argument. So you could see that in the debate last night. He's very good at arguing. And I as a minister when I was trying to convince him of something, we'd often get in these very long arguments and he's very good at that kind of debating.
But I never felt that he had the kind of big sense of who he was and where he stood on the really big issues .I wasn't completely convinced on where he stood on Brexit. I couldn't understand why he endorsed Boris Johnson so quickly, except because he wanted to get a fast track into the cabinet.
It's very understandable that many other people I joined Parliament with were like that -Matt Hancock Priti Patel had a bit of that going on as well.
I think in a way to survive as Prime Minister, he needed to have a sense of who he was and who his values were.
His biggest chance. I still think as if he'd come in and said, ‘I'm distancing myself from Liz Truss, Boris Johnson. I'm going to vote on this privileges committee report. This is a disgrace. This is a new direction. I'm changing things’. He might have had hope in this election."

Spot on Rory. If Sunak had made clear from the outset he was distancing himself from the previous numpties and had stressed a record of recovering some stability and competence, he might have stood a chance in the election. As it is, he’s just another Tory leader who is out of touch and in the game only for themselves. There is not a shred of public service evident anywhere in this Government and people up and down the country are sick to the teeth with all of them.

I refuse to believe that these two are so unintelligent to be this naive. Sunak has been a shocking PM by any measure, preceded by being a pretty shocking chancellor prior. The simple fact is, is that the forefront of politics in this country has been exposed to show the levels of corruption that truly run this country. Whether it be by influential think tanks, dictatorial media moguls financing the party which best benefits them - to the levels of incompetence we give responsibility to for running this country. And the worst thing is, the public lap it up. The Tories have imploded both themselves and this country and still they have support. Labours fulcrum and what it stood for has been ripped apart just to gain power until it largely represents what used to be called conservatism. Neither party work for us, and so through apathy and dislike, you have parties like Reform who can come in with ridiculous claims that are completely unworkable (mixed with a decent side of racism and bigotry) and worryingly larger swathes of disillusioned Tory and Labour voters find themselves pulled to them. Yet their leader is exactly the same, a self served faux-Trump former banker who just wants to hand-grenade the Tories with his ridiculous claims about what his party will do, knowing full well if the Tories confess they cant match it, then it wins him votes and seats. Doesnt matter how outlandish the claim is, make it and the Tories have to either ignore it or counter it - both of which lose them voters. Politics as it is in this country does not work for average people, doesnt matter which of the two main parties are voted in.

the key to understanding why it's almost certainly not finished, imo, is to consider it as an arm of the british aristocracy, maintained now through links forged between the future politicians & the future landowners at eton - where rory also happened to go to school. the reality today is that rural britain is still home to huge estates, & families with massive local sway that, when combined with favourable electoral maps & clubs like the garrick, mean the a tory party filled with old etonians can effectively never be pushed further than the next election away from the possibility of returning to power. until there is a reckoning in british instiutions with the obvious reality that eton is a particularly aggressive parasite on democracy, the party will party on :(

The problem with politics in the U.K. and much of the democratised world generally is a lack of preparedness to reform the systems that actually support our politics. We’re approaching a point where the entire artifice needs to be reformed root and branch. The institution is rotten pretty much sums it up for me. It often feels, sounds and looks like morals, ethics, integrity and honesty just don't matter. Politicians can often sound like they are hiding something and not being upfront. Part of the issue of calling it "minor corruption" is in itself a part of the issue; 1) it downplays what happened. 2) it's wrong regardless if it was minor or major. I would love to hear more of Rorys thoughts on how parties, parliament works etc and his ideas to change that for the better. I may disagree with some of his ideas but I respect him.
