About prisons, here is an idea: How about building new prisons and demolishing those victorian that are no longer fit for purposes. You could take lessons from Norway but Mr Stewart along with majority of convervative party and the public would be outraged with any proposal to spend money on criminals when young graduates can't find a place to live. Well build more houses as well. The problem is this reluctance to spend moeny on public sector services has been the conrner stone of the Conceravtive party that now it has become part of their religion. NHS is an example of it. They have run it down for so long that saving it is no longer a viable proposition.

He's a "proper" politician - he understands that one of the main aspects of politics is that it "mucks about with peoples lives, sometimes for the better but not always" and that some kind of consensus is required in order to be of benefit to more peoples' lives than the opposite. There are not enough of his ilk from the various political persuasions. No-one can be "right" 100% of the time, and sometimes that depends on which way the wind blows, Rory seems to understand this concept and be able to deal with and articulate it. If Rory were to head up a new "centrist party" with others of his ilk (even with the likes of the "politically opposite Alastair Campbell on board as some kind of political advisor) I would vote for it. We NEED good old honest debate, sensible compromising and testing of what the voting masses think, something which is sadly lacking now. . .

@@martinburman9790 His views are old style conservatism, a bit to the centre but he would never have felt at home in Labour. In a two party system the parties itself are coalitions of different groups who should be in different parties under a more democratic election system. If you define conservatism too strict you will get a party that only represent a fraction of the electorate that votes for you because the alternative is only one other party that they dislike more. What you really say is that the UK needs proportional representation then you can start the purest party you want. Until that time you can either have a broad coalition or you can have your party ruled by the lunatic fringe.

It’s impossible for one person to understand everyone they are a representative for. Can you truly understand someone else’s life? I would argue that there can be just as big of a gulf between “everyday” peoples lives. As Rory said, it’s wrong to think of politicians as representatives of their constituent, instead we should be thinking of them as a spokesperson or advocate. It’s about listening, understanding and empathising.
