I love how you just present the trips and focus on the good things, the rest is obvious and speaks for itself. In Queensland our trains have been designed to be as practical and cheap as possible, so first class is only first compared to the rest of the train. I hope one day we get genuine luxury train holidays here. Thank you 🙏

Thank you Rory for opening my eyes to the train travel that can be done in my own country. Great video, and you covered it well. We did this trip in about 2015, departing Roma St. at about 6pm. The carriages looked tired and worn then, and worse now. We absolutely hated the non reclining seats in the sleeper cabs, and spent most of our journey with the beds made (even during the day). The meals however are absolutely delicious. This is definitely a trip you wouldn't do twice-once is enough. And for those contemplating such a visit to Longreach; go in the cooler months. In December it's about 45C, not a cloud in the sky and you spend your time ducking from shady, airconditioned building to the next.

Great review of one of Australia's last traditional sleeping car trains that doesn't require one to take out a second mortgage to be able to experience it. It's on the bucket list for me but I probably won't be doing it soon because of the craziness we have experienced with COVID in 2020 and the ongoing dramas with quarantine, lockouts, social distancing and vaccines. I have self-imposed a five year travel ban on going anywhere in Queensland because of the attitude of their Premier to anyone that doesn't come from her State. I'll stick to Victoria for the time being. Enough negativity from me (grumpy old bugger I am)! You have done a really good job presenting this train service and the tourism potential about it. The staff hospitality and meal presentation make this a quality experience for any traveller and going First Class Sleeper is definitely worth it. Cheers from Michael.

@@RoryDing Also probably worth researching some of the reports made about her. Some of the tabloid stories stating they didn't let emergency patients into qld, for example, were corrected afterwards as untrue. People don't fact check all the stories they read and so the damage is already done.

I did this trip back in August 2020. Economy seat to Longreach and a sleeper back to Brisbane. Yes the food was fantastic on the way back but unfortunately due to a reaction to the fish I had for dinner I gave breakfast a miss (One of the dining crew came to my cabin to see why I had not turned up and even offered to bring my breakfast to me. I declined that offer.) I decided to get the "spare" seat made up as a bed and just slid off the end of the bed and exit the cabin when I had to get up in the middle of the night. Having the extra space, I found I had tons of room to store my bags. Table for a laptop? Your laptop is called a laptop as they were originally designed to be used on your lap. I enjoyed your video.
@RoryDing4 жыл бұрын
Hey thank you for watching! I know there’s plenty of space when you have the “spare” seat, but i wanted to show those who’s gonna travel together, that’s how much space they’ll get I don’t think I’d fit my suitcase if I only had the single cabin 😅

The last time I caught this train trip was in 1969 from Rockhampton to Longreach. It took three days back then
@colinandpeter8 ай бұрын
Thanks we watch your review and booked a trip from Caboolture to Rockhampton a couple of days there and then Rockhampton to Longreach. Unfortunately the train was 2 or more hours late getting to us at Caboolture with little information to the staff as to why there was a delay. Either way there were issues with a generator or something. The staff I think Stewards were brilliant polite and helpful. The dinner car was full from people only just getting fed from Roma Street, this meant we were greeted by a rude "Karen" who we think was in charge or the food service, but really should be working elsewhere. Made it a bad experience from the get go. We had our meal served in the seating area of the club car, we order steak and it was appalling, most people couldn't or wouldn't eat it. "Karen" finally got the message and offered my partner another, to which he said I'll have the pork. That thank goodness was really nice. For those who were drinking alcohol there was no suggestion that the bar service was closing shortly would you like a bottle rather than a glass. So of course once the small glass was consumed there was nothing more as the staff had to go to bed. Once we got back to our cabins the Steward had set it for sleeping, they are cramped but once used to it very comfy. Toe to Toe. Not bunks but two cabin with the bed set so toe to toe. Showers and toilets were kept clean not sure by who but thank you. Plenty of 240 AU power points in the room, and lot of lights once we figured them out we were able to get the mood right. The steward knocked and advise he would wake us in time for Rockhampton which was nice as even though the cabins had the PA speaker volume knob controlled we didn't appear to be getting any announcements probably because of the hour. Our luggage was offboarded along with us in Rocky. Rocky to Longreach was a couple of days later, all of the staff I can comfortably say and they know it where the "A Team" so polite helpful My breakfast was great and lunch was really nice. So thank you to the A Team for giving us the better part of the trip really appreciated it.

I've watched first-class sleeper videos from the US and Europe, and their cabins are larger and with more amenities. Some even offer ensuite toilets and showers. That being said, you found the bed to be comfortable and the space adequate - once you squeezed past the door. The food service on the Spirit of the Outback looked outstanding! Some US sleeper trains now provide only prepackaged food. :-(. My guess is that the train staff was first class, and one thing that no train in any other country can match is the scenery. I'd say that you had a memorable trip.
