Many thanks for this splendid piece of history! I moved from Blighty to here (USA) in 1983, but I was born in Barnstaple in 1950 and spent my first 18 years living in Braunton. I saw 34046 at Barry in the late '70s early '80s but to see her in full flight at the start of your video brought tears to these old eyes! Thank you from the bottom of this wicked old heart! …you've made this old man very happy! :) :) :)

When steam engine came to India it united India in a big way because people started travelling to faraway places to get jobs or for education.My first journey to Bombay from Kochi was by steam engine driven train.Those were the golden period of railway journey though bit smoky.Now they are just nostalgia and memories.Happy to see that steam engines are still running in Britain.

Wouldn't necessarily describe them as beasts. I prefer to call them the most beautiful thing ever invented by man as they seem to have an elegance that diesel and electric locomotives don't have. Each has their own character and everyone should see at least one in person during their life or they have not lived.
@BlanCamCZ

Asbood112: I agree. I think that an encounter with a steam locomotive is a paramount aesthetic experience. It changed my life :) Until about three years ago I had no idea there were steam locomotives still in operation in the Czech republic and when I finally saw one, it was so strong experience that I found my creativity again. They are so inspiring! (Only yesterday I was out to make a few shots of my favourite steam locomotive, the video is available on my channel :))

Beautiful trains. I once got to speak to the crew of Union Pacific's Big Boy. She's a humongous 4=8=8=4 designed for huge loads and straight rails. He said they always bring a d.e. locomotive in their consist. They can't always get the non chlorinated water they need. (Clorine does terrible things to the boiler when it's under pressure.) So they can just coast and let the diesel do the work. Just keeping enough steam pressure to blow the monsters whistle. Besides She's over 80 years old and outside her base there's just not enough people who know how to operate a steam engine.

Super collection of material so well done for that. Having said that it would be great to have more details - engine number, where taken etc - either onscreen or as a text - a shot-list with timings? - with the posting if that were possible? Appreciate that it adds considerably to the task but if available would add greatly greatly to the viewing experience and make a great set of clips even more memorable!

You are too kind to call it a small point. To me, a real enthusiast, the lack of captions was very irritating indeed. The video was a string of unconnected shots with no context whatever. Some of us have quite a deep knowledge of all this stuff and want to know more. I gave up after 5 minutes. I'll avoid this kind of thing in the future.
