Wouldn't necessarily describe them as beasts. I prefer to call them the most beautiful thing ever invented by man as they seem to have an elegance that diesel and electric locomotives don't have. Each has their own character and everyone should see at least one in person during their life or they have not lived.

Asbood112: I agree. I think that an encounter with a steam locomotive is a paramount aesthetic experience. It changed my life :) Until about three years ago I had no idea there were steam locomotives still in operation in the Czech republic and when I finally saw one, it was so strong experience that I found my creativity again. They are so inspiring! (Only yesterday I was out to make a few shots of my favourite steam locomotive, the video is available on my channel :))

Beautiful trains. I once got to speak to the crew of Union Pacific's Big Boy. She's a humongous 4=8=8=4 designed for huge loads and straight rails. He said they always bring a d.e. locomotive in their consist. They can't always get the non chlorinated water they need. (Clorine does terrible things to the boiler when it's under pressure.) So they can just coast and let the diesel do the work. Just keeping enough steam pressure to blow the monsters whistle. Besides She's over 80 years old and outside her base there's just not enough people who know how to operate a steam engine.
