Good example of why recognising someone's ethnicity by skin colour is dumb. Considering it is boy-Ru, and RuPaul haven't been out since forever, filming dozen seasons of Drag Race in past 5 years - when Raven have been over-tanning for past decade. Out of drag Raven is actually darker than Rupaul, if you look at pictures.

Tanning is one thing, but you can’t be surprised if someone call her out for cultural appropriation. But I suppose some of her hats resemble for example mild version of typical zulu hats (like wide on top, smaller on the bottom ones), but those types of hats in this shape were also popular since centuries in Russia and are part of some traditional outfits (and I think in many cultures those styles of having big hats are also based on fashion from the colonist countries, like replicating the Liz 2nd looks, not specifically the zulu hat, but just big hats in general). And also there is not much you can do with a hat, so there is also that. She also loves her headwraps and bows, so maybe that's also what you are talking about, but then again all of it comes from centuries of mixing of cultures, and they were popular even in the last century in America, Europe and Asia, like the ones for example Liz Taylor wore. So I don't think that should be something cancellable really. Unless on that photo she actually had worn like specifically traditional or fully religious headdress, from specific tribe or culture with specific decorations and made out of traditional material.

I would also argue that whole idea of cultural appropriation is bs as it is against the idea of cultural evolution. We wouldn't be here, if not for cultural mixing. And whole idea goes on a dangerous territory of mandating what people can or can't wear. Most of the hats, clothes or even patterns wouldn't be open for most of the humanity, if that was a case. The only problem is when it goes into an area of mocking. So staying in drag race universe. I would argue that Raven matching her makeup to her tan and wearing interesting hat is far from what for example Scarlet Adams did.

@@mjm3091 first of all thank you for your reply and interesting point of view. Just wanted to say that above all I like Raven and cancel culture is really stupid. Cultural appropriation is not bs, but it can be seen as a positive thing like a cross contamination that creates new culture and so on. But the term mainly refers to the controversy about appropriation of culture from minorities by “dominant” ethnicities. In the fashion industry it may be hard to actually call someone out for culture appropriation, but in many other things is not like that. The appropriation of symbols, for example, in history to be used as a symbol for some thing completely different is cultural appropriation (just think about the swastica). Plus, all black music that didn’t pass on radio but were re-written by white people is a form of appropriation and this lead us to more subtle form of appropriation nowadays. But, again, your point of view is interesting and cultural mixing can be a positive thing, but that’s another topic.

Also confessionals aren't good example of person's skin colour. For one - it has been like what 12 years ago? For second - in confessionals they are put into major spotlight. For example check how Jan looks in confessionals and how she looks in the workroom of AS6. In confessionals she just looks like any basic American, in werkroom you can actually see that she is of Italian-Armenian ancestry. It's also very noticable on black girls as well, where a lot of undertones are just lost in the lighting.

That's what Scottish, French, and Asian accents make me feel. ESPECIALLY Scottish.
