That bird thing is true! It might not have been used in every mine, but my parents tell me about my grandpa mining. I think you mean a Canary but yes you’re correct. Miners did in fact use canaries as a carbon monoxide alarm. They would be affected by the gas first due to their breathing rates and small size. If the bird became sick or died, the miners knew they needed to leave.
