Smithsonian Magazine ( Nov.2014 ) has a lengthy article on Rosanne Cash and the creation of her album The River &Threads .Included in the issue is a copy of the lyrics and a description of each stanza. This certainly made the song resonate to me.

I believe it means their marriage union.

nicholasjkane Yes, you are, but it's subtle. I believe it refers to God's collection of believers ... that union to be unbroken or "made whole." Just examine the context and I believe it makes sense.
