St. Pope John Paul II - “The rosary is my favorite prayer…A prayer so simple and so rich!…From my deepest heart I exhort all to recite it.” The Rosary - Latin: garland of roses, the flower symbolizing the Virgin Mary. The Catholic rosary is a devotion dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, the Mother of God. (CCC 971)
St. Mother Teresa - Interior Vision 1947, “- Bring them to Jesus - Carry Jesus to them. - Fear Not - Teach them to say the Rosary - the family Rosary and all will be well - Fear not -.”
St. Padre Pio - “The Rosary is the ‘weapon’ for these times… for her Rosary is the weapon against the evils of the world today. Say it as often as you can! Be souls of prayer. Prayer shakes the Heart of God, it obtains necessary graces!.. kneel down and pray the Rosary. Pray the Rosary before the Blessed Sacrament or before a crucifix.”
Prayers - A set number of specific prayers: Apostles’ Creed (Credo), Our Father (the Pater Noster or the Lord’s Prayer), Hail Marys (Aves), Glory Be (Gloria Patri) with the concluding prayer Hail Holy Queen (Salve Regina).
Decades - Between the introductory and the concluding prayer of the rosary are decades. Each decade consists of 10 Hail Marys bracketed between 1 Our Father and 1 Glory Be.
Mysteries - refers to a truth of the faith, not incomprehensible. 4 groups of mysteries contain 5 decades. Each decade focuses on a “mystery in the life of Christ and his Blessed Mother.” When “praying the rosary,” it’s customary to pray one group of mysteries at a time.
Five Joyful Mysteries (Monday and Saturday)
Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, Presentation, Finding in the Temple
Five Sorrowful Mysteries (Tuesday and Friday)
Agony in the Garden, Scourging at the Pillar, Crowning of Thorns, Carrying of the Cross, Crucifixion
Five Glorious Mysteries (Wednesday and Sunday)
Resurrection, Ascension, Descent of the Holy Spirit, Assumption, Crowning of the Blessed Virgin
St. Pope John Paul II - October 2002, created the “Luminous Mysteries.” Christ, in his public life, manifested himself as the “Mystery of Light.” “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” Jn 8:12
The Five Luminous Mysteries (or) Mysteries of Light (Thursday)
Baptism in the Jordan, His self-manifestation at the Wedding of Cana
His Proclamation of the Kingdom of God, with His call to conversion,
His Transfiguration, His institution of the Eucharist, as the sacramental expression of the Paschal mystery
The Apostles’ Creed: original form of the creed around A.D. 125, and the present form dates from the 400s.
The Our Father: or Pater Noster (from its opening words in Latin), is from the Bible in two slightly different versions (Matt. 6:9-13; Luke 11:2-4). Matthew is the one most commonly prayed by all Christians today.
The Hail Mary: The angel Gabriel greeted Mary, “Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee,” (Luke 1:28). Mary’s cousin Elizabeth said, “Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,” (Luke 1:42). Only the names of “Jesus” and “Mary” have been added to these two verses for sake of clarity as to whom is being referred. CCC 971
2nd part, “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.” Mary is Mother of Jesus, (Luke 1:45), God’s only Son. The Bible calls Christians saints, “holy ones” (Eph.1:1, Phil.1:1, Col.1:2). “Apostles’ Creed” AD 125, Christians profess to believe "in the communion of saints,” in heaven. “The twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and with golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.” (Rev. 5:8).
In heaven, Mary is a holy saint, we can pray and can ask intercession of saints in heaven, “Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.” (1 Tim. 2:1- 4). see CCC 2676, 2677, 2678
The Glory Be: or Gloria Patri (opening words in Latin version), “Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.” 4th century hymn of praise.
Hail Queen: (Salve Regina), Hail Holy Queen, 11th century. “Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy, hail, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.” Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
