I think there were some old frets they called bar frets and they could be drove out but they were not made like the frets that are used now.

??? Yep. Some Fender frets come out sideway . Stewmc has a fret work handbook on all technique necessary to replace them . True enough

You can drive frets out the side. There are examples of it if you google it???
