Jerry: From Tom of REGAL WRECK (Ref RSW 161) About 5 years and 410 videos ago I saw you use the Bridge Hole Drill Jig I had made to help you wth the GREAT repair you made on my Father's Regal guitar. I believe I saw it again in this video. If that Drill Jig has been of use to you in other repairs, that would bring me great pleasure. Recall that I had originally thought about fixing the Regal Wreck myself but came to my senses and sent it to you. Next to selection of my wonderful wife, that was one of the best decisions of my life. I believe I made that Drill Jig to help me with the repair but sent it to you to help you. I believe I have watched most, if not all, of your videos. You are truly an artist. For those who have not viewed Jerry's repair of my Father's Regal guitar, please check out REGAL WRECK (RSW 160 and 161) for , I believe, these are one of his greatest and most enjoyable guitar repairs. I still play the Regal Wreck often and it is great. Thanks for the great videos and the joy you have provided to me wth the repair of the Regal Wreck and all your great videos. Sincerely, Tom

Actually when you first had it at pitch with the cracks & original bridge etc and strummed it cleanly, the sound was "there" as you noted and we all could hear. You're work is incredible. I've always found that new strings will "settle" just a smidge...then it's PERFECT! Cheers!

Fantastic job on that old Gibson. I have really missed spending time in the shop. (via video) When I first found these videos, I binged watched most, if not all of them. I even got the courage to rip out a loose bridge plate on my guitar and cut and glue another one in, using everything I learned from Jerry. I was really scared. After I ran out of videos I strayed away and this is my first video back. I love the way Jerry talks to the camera. Makes me feel like I'm right there in the shop. Thank you Jerry.

When I worked on the Apollo Command Module if you said that what you had worked on was good enough you would get a dressing down. Perfection was expected. Perfection was meeting or exceeding the specifications as measured with instruments. Jerry you are artist both in music and craftsmanship neither can be calculated or measured with a set of calipers. you measure with your knowledge, skills and hearing. if you say it's perfection I have to agree with you. The Aussie needs to find a picker and go look for nit some ware else.

Getting rid of that tone assassin height adjustable bridge really woke this old guitar up. I don’t know why so many of the manufacturers fell in love with those things. Martin never used them but most everyone else flirted with them, some up into the early 70s.
@zapa1pnt2 жыл бұрын
Plastic bridges, plastic saddles, screwed and bolted bridges, plywood bridge plates........ Gibson has been through (actually originated) every bad idea, in lutherie. You would think they were owned by AMF.
@edwardfestor87262 жыл бұрын
@@zapa1pnt Yeah, they did some things worthy of Harmony at that time. Almost every guitar maker was bought by a big corporation that knew nothing about making guitars. Gibson by Norlin, Gretsch by Baldwin, Fender by CBS. AMF didn’t wreck a guitar company, as they were too busy wrecking Harley-Davidson. Martin was in family hands, but had other problems…..

1:01:12 if you reverse the order you avoid pulling the string through the post this exerts sideways pressure on the post every string change... this can loosen ferrules and crack the finish around the ferrules , if you start at the top with the string already through the hole, top wrap the first wrap this locks it in then bottom wrap the rest three or more wraps, way easier than pulling it through at the end like you said getting older so try switching to this method . Peace!

Re the word "Perfect". It is a very subjective word. One person's perfect can be another's "sloppy". The operative part of Jerry's comment "It's perfect for me" is NOT the word Perfect, but "FOR ME". I can watch and enjoy Ben Crowe or Ted Woodford or any of the other Luthiers on KZbin build or repair a guitar with the utmost accuracy. Measuring, filing, crowning and polishing individual frets with multiple tools, painstakingly making sure that every part of the guitar is exactly parallel, symmetrical and so on. The end product is a guitar that looks, plays and sounds as good as it possibly can be. Then I can get exactly the same enjoyment from watching Jerry tear the neck & back off a 60 year old guitar, repair or replace anything that is broken, put it back together, fix any issues with the neck, stick that back on then do a full setup "BY EYE", then sort out the finish. What he is left with is ALSO a guitar that looks, plays and sounds as good as it possibly can be! Both these things are "PERFECT"Ñ As Jerry said (to paraphrase) "If you don't like it, you know where the door is.... Don't let it hit you on the a**e on the way out"!!

It's so satisfying watching these. I'll try to catch a few more. Have an elderly Seagull 12 (serial number under 10,000) and a 20 year old Ovation Legend 12, both with bridge lifting issues (and the Ovation is split below the bridge to the edge of the guitar). Neither is really playable now, but maybe if I get enough confidence to tackle them, I can have some fun with them again. Both were sent to luthiers in the past who could never set the things properly.

On your drill chuck... I was taught to not tighten tooling using only one chuck key hole. Do a lap of all three lightly then another lap of all three for final tightness. Thus is only when precision is important. Basic stuff can be one and done. You said sometimes it's fine so I reccomend you try this on the low tolerance tasks.
