In the Rocky Mountains of Colorado (1963 approx.), near Glenwood Springs/Aspen it got as low as 30 deg below zero on occasion. It was so cold I saw a 3 -legged dog frozen to a tree... LOL

I'd bet it's the top of an antique ladies makeup compact. Does it have a place for hinges? or do you think it was snap-on/snap-off. I'd also bet that it's silver plated brass, but could be solid silver, based on the surface. Silver plating will usually rub off underground as the part moves due to frost heave.

I agree, what would a guy carry something like that for? Compact, powder/blush case more than likely. Tobacco snuff highly unlikely... it's too big. It's not rusted, probably silver... Did they have tin/aluminum/pewter 100 tears ago. Maybe?

A container for tobacco? Too big for snuff. Ladies' compact, as suggested by commenter below sounds plausible too, I think. Why nail it to a wall? Picture inside at one time? The tag on the top might me for initials on a tag. Got me stumped.
