Why didn't Gardaí and politicians engage with the protestors and ask that the women and children be given clear access to the hotel? The protestors were polite enough to make their intentions to block the entrance clear to the authorities. From the footage I have seen, Gardaí were heavy handed, over zealous and turned a drama into a crisis.

Airlines/airports should be required to “temporarily impound” the passports, etc. - at point of departure - of non-EU nationals travelling to Ireland - then on arrival at Dublin, Cork or wherever - at “passport check” point - each of the relevant passengers - as a group - present themselves and, in turn, can be “re-united” with their passports, etc (a copy having been taken) as each has his/her name called out and asked to come up to collect their documentation. All this to be done in presence of Immigration officials - ok - it means delays but we need to have a “fool proof” system - a system which automatically denies asylum to anyone who - on leaving the airport - then claims - to the Dept of Justice - “me duckoments have bin stulen or I’z must ta dropped dem”. The basis of this lengthy comment is my understanding that no airline - at the moment - allows anyone on board without travel documents - i. e. the “disappearing trick” must be occurring at some subsequent stage.

Of course what Primetime is choosing to focus on, and what they don’t mention is the fact that the majority of these supposed ‘refugees’ seeking asylum here are men (incentivised by the government by giving owners of the properties more money for single men compared to women and children).
