Whites Eagle Spectrum Overview and Air Test

As the title states, this is an overview and air test of the Whites Eagle Spectrum, one of Whites' first digital metal detectors. This Overview will feature the Eagle Spectrum's stock coil only. The Whites Eagle Spectrum is an ancestor to many modern day Whites metal detectors, and if anyone has been mding for a while they have probably heard of this old boy.
The Air test is simply testing a few common targets to see the VDI and target ID that the Eagle Spectrum gives, as well as to hear the sounds it makes for each target. The targets were not buried, and therefore real world hunting conditions may give you different results. With that said, take the air test for what it is.
This particular Eagle Spectrum is over 22 years old, although it is still in relatively nice shape, with no broken pieces or deep scratches.

Robert, From my experiences, with each having their stock coils, the Eagle Spectrum will outperform the Ace 250 in most situations. One has to remember that even though the Eagle Spectrum is much older than the Ace 250, it was a mid-range or above unit back in the day. The Ace 250 is a beginner unit. This difference in age is overcome quite easily by the Eagle Spectrum due to its tech. As far as accuracy, I find that the Eagle Spectrum is generally more accurate due to its use of VDI AND Target ID through word.

+Roscue2 Comparing an Eagle Spectrum to an Ace 250 is the equivalent of comparing a fighter jet to a slingshot. Despite all the raves, the Ace 250 is an entry level toy.

True, but comparisons need to be made on such things... such as the Ace 250 vs AT Pro... sure you pay more for one, but what exactly is the difference and is it truly worth the cost?

The Ace 250 is in no way a toy. I'm not a Garrett guy by any means. I have more Whites machines than I know what to do with currently. I have had a couple 250s and a couple AT Pros pass through my hands. I learned pretty early on that the Ace 250 provides far more value than it's MSRP. It's a very capable unit. If it does fall in the low grade, then it falls near the top of the low grade or bottom of the mid. Not bad at all for a $212 machine that can often be acquired on the used market for $100-$150. I admit I was once skeptical of the AT Pro. Seemed a bit overhyped. Having a couple months to play with the last one that passed through my shop changed how I look at it. In standard mode the AT Pro is not really much set apart from the 250 with the exception of some added depth. In Pro mode however, the lines of distinction become clear. Its performance in iron, its depth, and it ability to identify bottlecaps and other bad targets increases substantially. It has killer audio. The AT Pro earned its seat at the top of the mid range among many great machines like this one, which were once the top of the food chain.

@@Mr.Technical77 as someone about to buy a machine for the first time, would you go for a newer model costing a fortune or an older model that's lost its value but does the job still, also how heavy is this spectrum? Looks easy to understand for a beginner and I have the option of buying one

gravelbags 247 I couldn't in good conscience recommend an Eagle over some of the newer machines for a couple of reasons. One is that the Eagle is now so old that hardware failures, LCD in particular become more and more likely. Second is that the performance gap in trash laden sites between newer units and older units has now become substantial. Therefore there are now better options even on the lower end of the scale. There are about to be quite amazing options on the lower end of the scale if you could get your hands on a Simplex by Nokta-Makro or especially a Vanquish by Minelab. There's a bit of a waiting period for their release, however. The Simplex is due out anytime now. The Vanquish early next year. Even right now machines like the Teknetics Liberator will outperform an Eagle. If you're willing to spend a significant amount of money there are machines that have set themselves apart from every other machine out there. Machines like the CTX-3030, Equinox 600 and 800, Whites V3i and VX3, XP Deus and XP ORX, Makro-Nokta Anfibio and Multi-Kruzer. You can't go wrong with any of these and they do offer superior target analysis, superior depth and most of those offer superior target separation/unmasking. The best value for the money is the Equinox 800, especially if you can find it gently used. I always recommend gently used, particularly when you get to machines as expensive as CTX, V3i and XP Deus. A $2,500 CTX can often be had for $1,000-$1,200 on the used market. A $1,550 V3i can often be had for as little as $600-$700. My two favorites are the V3i and Nox 800. The V3i is very complex though and most people don't get along with it. That's important to know.

A friend loaned me his WHITE SILVER EAGLE ( it is not a "Spectrum" and there is no moel number on it) last week, in order to possibly help me find a hearing aid that I lost on my acreage. I know the exact area where I was standing when I picked up a large tree branch to throw it a few feet away. As I threw the branch, one of its smaller branch tips at the end of a branch on it caught my hearing aid's tubing and pulled the hearing aid out of my ear, taking the hearing aid away with it. I pruned that tree branch down into individual small pieces ( 3 inches in length on average) by hand before depositing the pruning into the yard waste dumpster... no hearing aid found. I have cleared the immediate area of pine needles and the large oak leaves very carefully, slowly hand sifting the debris through my fingers twice (into two different wash tubs) before putting that material in the yard waste dumpster. Having searched the cleared area ( and the pine needle strewn border around it) ,with the metal detector, I have not found the hearing aid yet. Using the other hearing aid that I have (the same make & Model), the WHITE SILVER EAGLE detects it on the ground out there by quickly interrupting the 'hum' of the metal detector... the search with the metal detector goes on.... Maybe a coyote, raccoon, or a squirrel might have made off with it?

Bernie Pokorski it is definitely possible. Another possibility is that when it was pulled from your ear it went further away than you might have expected being that it is so lightweight.
