"Not sure why Ellen is so surprised by this ability. Portia is Australian and speaks with an American accent." Perhaps you need to consider that this is a talk show and in order to make the conversation interesting to viewers hosts sometimes ask about or converse about things that they already know the answers to but the audience may not.

Ellen's southern accent has been diluted from all her years of living in LA but you can still hear some of it from time to time, depending on what she says and to whom she's talking. I think it comes out more when she's talking to another southerner. I'm originally from the northeast but lived in "the deep south" for 10 yrs as a kid and even though I've since moved far away, I still hold strong to the "y'all." I totally agree with Ellen - it's just so much more inclusive than "you guys" and rolls off the tongue easier than "you all." I managed to drop most of my southern colloquialisms but "y'all" is going to stay with me for life!

I think it's much easier to do an American accent as an Aussie or Brit since their accents are effectively one or the hardest to imitate. Just the other day I was watching Daredevil and Charlie Cox had such a perfect American accent that I completely forgot he was Brit. On the other hand, I've heard Anne Hathaway completely butcher the British accent before.

Hilarious. Ellen is genuinely funny. Rose Byrne is hawt, and does a perfectly undetectable American accent. I wanted to hear her do a Southern accent too. I loved Byrne's imitation of the Kiwis....the 'fush and chups' line was something I learned playing WoW with a bunch of Kiwis and I was able to discern their accents from the Aussies quite easily after a while. ***** You are just being as critical as you possibly can. I've seen your type before. Nobody talks like you're saying. You know you're full of it. You're warped in the head. It annoys me you selected, "They". You could not possibly defend any of what you said because none of it is true. You've probably seen an Aust'n.Extreme Comedy sketch on TV regarding the fascinating acquiring of accents. And that is not something unique to Australia. It's a ubiquitous truism. You'd find it in Poland eg. You will find individuals, often rural, that have found their own, unique way of speaking differently from the rest. This feature is not lost to comedy sketches. I've seen the English do it. I've seen Americans do it. And you've allocated it to a whole population of a City which is untrue. You are gullible but chose to make your gullibility sarcastically critical. Like I said, Your type has been seen & heard before. Take all that you said, into a Sydney Pub & they will show you how you're wrong.

We quite often omit spaces when we speak in Australia...for example... "Howyagoinmateorright? " ("how are you going, mate, all right?") - refined translation: "how are you, my friend, are you well?" The most commonly used word in Australia is "G'day" - pronounced "Gud ay". It's a shortened version of "Good day". It is used as a preferred replacement for words like "Hello" or "Hi".

The only movies I've watched from Rose Byrne were Annie and Peter Rabbit. And in both films she has an austrialian accent and works with director Will Gluck. However, i watched like a boss and there she has an american accent. I had no idea if she really has an american accent or if she's just faking it like Anne Hathaway's french accent in the movie the hustle.
