A floating artificial island built in Mexico by British artist Richart "Rishi" Sowa. He's first Island was destroyed by a hurricane in 2005; a replacement, Joyxee Island, has been open for tours since 2008.
In the waters of Isla Mujeres, the "Island of Women", near Cancun. It opened for tours in August, 2008.
The new island was initially 20 metres (66 ft) in diameter, which has since expanded to 25 metres (82 ft), and plants and mangroves are already growing on it. It contains about 100,000 bottles. The new island has three beaches, a house, two ponds, a solar-powered waterfall and river, a wave-powered washing machine and solar panels. Volunteers helped with the project. Sowa will continue to make improvements to the Island, so it will always be a work of art in progress.

He makes a little bit of money for his tour. Its not much. Its interesting. Its educational. And if people are willing to pay in exchange for an experience, how is that any different than paying a few bucks to go to a museum or a park? (Even free parks often have parking fees) Rather than funding,, he asks people for trash at the end 😂 in his beautiful little song lol

@samekogan
@samekogan 8 жыл бұрын
+Xaiano I just don't think you understand nor see the brilliant resourcefulness this man posses. you think you're headed up the hill? this guy has shit figured out once the engine breaks down and causes your vehicle to roll down backwards. this is using his surroundings to its fullest and finest. if you can't see that now then maybe you never will and that's fine. but it's amazing that you cant.
@xaiano794
@xaiano794 8 жыл бұрын
Sam kogan Don't you see the folly in your own statement? You say 'once it breaks down' - and go on to state that it is THEN that his work would surpass my 'machine', but that statement infers that PRIOR to it breaking down, my 'machine' is most definitely superior and furthermore that there is only a chance of it failing at some unspecified point in the future. Therefore, given a choice between guaranteed inferiority now, or possible inferiority after an uncertain amount of time, it is obvious that your 'free person' is always the lesser choice.

I'm not sure he meant a literal giant tornado. But the flight was more or less a joke, unless he was speaking of little gliding with a light enough island, and enough lift, it'd be more like a hop than a flight. but making your own tornado is entirely possible if you set it up correctly, as hot air rises rapidly, cold air will rush in, the trick to making your own mini-tornado is finding a method to control how the cold air flows down again. the hot air would have to be REALLY hot however.

You are completely wrong! For everyone saying that this man is a genus, solved mankind's problem for a sustainable development, or that he is making huge leaps forward in to our future...... you're completely wrong. What is sustainable about having a house made of "PLASTIC" and "Garbage". Did you guys not go to school? Garbage in our ocean is not sustainable, but in fact destroys our environment, the worst being PLASTIC! It slowly disintegrates in to microscopic pieces of plastic, which fish then eat/breath/absorb and it is one of the worst problems we have with our ocean right now. You do not want plastic in our water guys!!!! How is everyone so blind? Yeah it looked cool..... Don't be fooled by the visual aesthetics, this place is horrible for the environment and everyone who thinks this is a "Genius" idea, is either blind, ignorant, voted for Trump, or perhaps all of the above. He'd get about 10 minutes on his Island in the U.S. before some environmental agency would put an end to it. What he needs is a grant to go to the middle of the Paciific (the garbage patch), and build there were materials would never be a problem. Perhaps semi melt the plastic into float able cubes in a form design to interlock. He would have enough material to build his own floating continent. People could volunteer to assist in the cleanup/build as a vacation spot in the South Seas on a budget.

@cerebral3591

@Aron Speedy Yeah... doubtful on the flying part. A thunderstorm able to make even a weak tornado able to lift a house requires more energy than a nuclear bomb. Bob no, that is a bad idea because any kind of fuel still kills the planet. it is also stupid to do so much work to power technology if we can use the wind, the sun and the water combined with gravity. you can make biodiesel out of any biomass, it does not have to be hemp. but, the governments are about to invade rivers and the sea to strip the bottoms off of life and plant algae to feed them with gmo corn and then harvest them to make fuel.

There is a dude in Rio who did similarly and parked his 1980s Chevy Opala on it and installed a pool. The island was floating on top of very dirty polluted waters and he built it from the trash that was floating on it.

Yo, stuff is controlled by big companies. They have a say you dont. Many solar and nuclear power companies have been slandered by the fossil fuel and coal companies. Because ibviously, they don’t want to lose their job- or power. If that is what you meant then cool. Either way don’t sound so mean, it dosent help.
@wendygoerl9162
@wendygoerl9162 5 жыл бұрын
The problem is it costs so much to recycle. Mainly because there's so much labor involved in sorting out the different types of plastic. For example, you 2-liter soda bottle is #1, its cap is #2, and the cap might have an insert of who-knows-what. Or toothbrushes: the bristles are nylon and the rest of the brush isn't. Then you have filmy stuff like bags (and maybe bottled water, those things keep getting thinner), which can only be processed by specialized machinery, regular equipment gets gummed up trying to handle it. I've always thought a great way to deal with old plastic is to let steamships burn them for fuel. They could take them unsorted--even uncleaned--and they're big enough to spare the space for a bulky fuel. But thanks to all the "carbon footprint" yammering of the climate-change Chicken Littles, most of the remaining steamships are getting converted to diesel.

if you are wondering whether this guy is intelligent or crazy, he is definitely intelligent all the things he talked about are based on real science and would work. the information is known by many who understand science and physics like weather and how things react to each other, it is not new theories it is just science and ecological ways of living all put together for an whole island rather then just a house. but the fact he knows this science and physics tells me that he must have had some science/physics knowledge before starting and unfortunately most people do not, so i think he is pretty intelligent. the fact he is doing something different is not crazy most people blindly follow the norm because they think they should...maybe letting others ideas of normalisation control your whole life, which you only get one of is crazy. think about it you could have this man who never wears pink his whole life because some nobody years ago who is so unimportant there are even no records of them, decides pink is only for girls and why there is no reason people just let others control their lives, that is the real craziness.

Actually you're wrong, like other in the comment section, you immediately decide that this man is a genius because he did something that looks aestheticly pleasing, however this is the dumbest thing you can do to our ocean. He is not a genius, he did not solved mankind's problem for a sustainable development, and he's definitely not making huge leaps forward in to our future...... you're completely wrong. Open Your Eyes people!

I sailed with two german brothers in the 90s on The Eco Raft: a boat built of garbage The Kon Kreaky made of tires stuffed with 2 liter bottles. In the end (few years later) this 70'x30' raft was abandoned after getting waterlogged and grounding in the shallows and became a big cleanup issue for others. Flying island powered by a tornado is on the crazy side but his other ideas like electricity generation and power from the waves are true. I don't know about steering with the sails, I think a rudder is needed. Very cool, not very clean but I'm not pointing fingers.
