CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Rosencrantz (Gary Oldman) infuriates Guildenstern (Tim Roth) with a seemingly endless series of correct guesses in a coin toss.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Much as he would later do with Shakespeare in Love (1998), writer Tom Stoppard delivered a tale of Shakespearean origin from a skewed and unexpected perspective. In this case, it's the perspective of two relatively minor characters from Hamlet, Rosencrantz (Gary Oldman) and Guildenstern (Tim Roth), courtiers who, in the original play, were dispatched offstage before the narrative's conclusion. In Stoppard's script (which he also directed), the two supporting players take center stage as the events unfold in Elsinore Castle. Unable to determine the source of the prince's tortured despair, the duo ponders the question of fate as their predetermined roles are played out. Meanwhile, they dabble in a little verbal tennis and some ill-advised science experiments, and endure the puzzling attentions of mysterious wandering thespians led by (Richard Dreyfuss). Ordered to accompany Hamlet (Iain Glen) to England, the pair learn that the letter they carry instructs that nation's king to decapitate their mentally unbalanced and irksome charge, a revelation that Hamlet overhears.

Guildenstern is a deeply philosophical thinker, but cannot identify the importance or relevance of anything around him, while Rosencrantz has an incredibly intuitive and perceptive grasp of the physical realm, especially when faced with anything out of the ordinary, but is too stupid to follow his observations to any kind of logical explanation. Since they are always together, there must be some barrier to their communication, some inability to understand each others’ thought process, because otherwise the two of them would make a pretty smart individual.

True story: I had a silver half dollar that ALWAYS came up tails when my friend flipped it. I mean, it was uncanny. I used to carry that coin around in my pocket. We went to a baseball game once and I was buying tickets from a guy scalping them outside. After haggling a bit over the price, I said, "Okay, we'll flip a coin. If I win, we get my price. If you win, you get yours." He said, "Okay." I said, "I have a coin right here." He said pointing to my friend, "Okay, but HE FLIPS IT!" Of course it was Tails and we won. But in the end, I gave him some extra money because it wasn't really fair.

about 10 years before I acted in a stage production of this play. Just a minor part, I was one of the players in the play-within-play theater troop.

Consider. One. Probability is a factor which operates within natural forces. Two. Probability is not operating as a factor. Three. We are now held within un- sub- or super-natural forces. Discuss.

@@marcelhagen300 Nope, i've never read any of the shakespearean books, are they worth it? What makes them so highly regarded by the literature community? I see a lot of people rave about them but i've never understood the hype. What are your thoughts?

@bzoa430 His plays are quite good if you enjoy reading poetry as its closer to that than it is to prose. They are extremely important for their cultural significance. If nothing else, you can go "Ohhh, that how that literary trick or character archetype got popular."
