Differences:
1) Price
Big box stores are typically priced lower
2) Warranty
Most Big Box Stores got 1 year store credit. Rose vendors online warranty varies
3) Graft vs. Own Root
Note: We are talking own root, not bare root!
Own root means both the root and the top plant is the same plant. Graft means the root is more more vigorous plant, with the top the plant you purchase. So you pay money for the top. If the top dies all the way down to the bud union, then you are left with the vigorous plant, not the one you purchase.
4) Disease
Big Box roses might have disease like Rose Mosaic disease.
In general, you will pick the one look more healthy in big box store, and with the 1 year store credit policy, it is pretty safe already.
5) Mislabelled rose
Big Box roses might run into risk of mislabelling, but that is the same for online vendor, depending on which you are dealing with. Big Box risk might be slightly bigger because it was in more contact with people during transit. That's why most people will first plant in a container for a year and move to ground the following to ensure they are dealing with the "correct" rose.
6) Risk / Reputation of vendor
Most big box stores, you don't have to worry about customer service or non-deliverables.
There are lots of rose online vendors and customer should beware to find a reputable one.
