This is a truly complete version of this remarkable match. No other available video shows what Ken Rosewall could do on the court.

This brings back memories of when I first discovered tennis, the 1972 WTC final. Laver vs. Rosewall, what a match. I knew nothing about tennis but within a week I’d bought my first racquet for about $5.00. Fifty years later and I still play and love the sport.

The men's tour had signed a contract to have their Saturday and Sunday semifinal and final matches broadcast throughout the US, by a major US television network, for the first time, soon before that. Then tennis increased in popularity extremely nationwide. And stayed that way for some years - until millions of new players realized that it was a lot harder to play it well than it looked.

Rosewall is the best player in the world that did not win Wimbledon. I was too young to watch his play when he was at his prime. But I was fortunate enough to watch him when he played the senior tour. His move and balance is beautiful to watch. I tried to model my game after his (not very successful). If you have more Rosewall videos please upload. Thanks 😊.

Thanks for this post. It's great to view the game "back in the day". These top players were just as talented as today's players, just the racquets, and stringing types and techniques, have improved. Either of these guys if in their prime played today, would be right up there with the top players. Talk about "feel" ... Rosewall was an absolute master. Roche would give other lefties a run for their money ! Also, i didn't know this, but it looks like Roche used that Wilson steel T-type racquet that Connors adopted. Boy, talk about a heavy racquet !! One of my team buddies used to play with that racquet and i just couldn't get used to it.

Thanks so much for this, which does indeed show Rosewall's artistry at its best. The commentators are Bud Collins and Jack Kramer, the latter who employed the two players in his pro circuit(the "handsome eight") for many years, causing them to be banned from tournaments like Wimbledon until 1968. Although Roche overall had a good record against Laver, he famously lost to him in the 1969 US Open, thus allowing Laver to complete the true Grand Slam for the second time. Modern fans may think the balls weren't hit very hard in that era, but this match shows clearly how both players would hammer it when given the chance. Placement on the racquet and then on the court was critical in that era. Nowadays the large racquet head gives players a larger margin of error. Also well-displayed here are the mis-directions or "fakes" particularly from the lefty Roche. Kramer complains at one point about this, joking that lefties shoud be illegal.

I think the first ever tennis matches I saw on TV were of players like Roche, Rosewall, Laver and Newcombe; then along came the Young Turks: Nastase, Connors, and then McEnroe. Crazy to think that Rosewall won slams *20 years apart!*

It's funny that BJK and Jack Kramer were sitting next to each other, considering that King a couple months later would stage a walkout and boycott of Kramer's tournament in Los Angeles due to lack of pay of the Women's players compared to the Men's players.
