This is indeed a laouto especially commisioned in 1985 from Turkish master luthier Ragip Akdeniz who is particularly well known for his outstanding work on the saz. The body design is from a very old oud that I found in Cairo. Ragip usta worked around this body design and created all the rest in accordance with the proportions of the lavta. It uses a miture of saz and Cretan laouto strings and is here tuned e b E b

Ross geia hara sou kai thanx for the clarification. Most of it it seems I got it right since well....you told me so! (some years back, in your house in Petralona). I hope Houdetsi will wait for our annual pilgrimage next summer too. Kalo xeimona.

It's called 'Laouto' (lute), just like the title of the piece. Ross ordered the luthier Recep Agdeniz to specially make it for himself if I'm not mistaken. To me, it's an attempt to combine the sound of the Cretan lute, with the shape and playability of the Lavta.

Thanks for the clarification. I didn't realize there was such a rich culture of lutes in Greek music. From what I have been seeing they are usually very ornamented, unlike Persian and to some degree Turkish lutes.

I am really glad you enjoy them peybak. As far as the title goes I cannot be very illuminating, Iokasti is Greek for Jocasta (the mother (and wife!) of Oedipus). I don't know if Ross had the actual character in mind... The instrument is exceptional I agree.

Ok, I have been watching your videos almost everyday. They are other-worldy. I have become a Ross Daly fan! Thank you for posting them lagoutieris! Now my question is: Why is this song called Lokasti's dream? BTW, this lavta-laouta is a beauty.

It looks like "Lavta" Fretted ud. Played like saz however.
