@@jordiogando695 also shows how tough Asuka really is because she was the actually the booker of the match and told Suzuki to annihilate her. Suzuki was actually very hesitant about it but Asuka insisted so he delivered.

@@acecashman1237A bit late, but that's true. Kana, as she was known back then, was apparently a big Suzuki fan, and she was willing to get the BEATS so he could get maximum heat. Suzuki was reluctant, but Kana was the booker, she insisted, and she got FUCKED UP, and Suzuki walked away having immense respect for her toughness on some anime shit

I mean...there's a reason Japanese pro wrestlers have become legit MMA icons. Minoru Suzuki and Masakatsu Funaki founded Pancrase. Ken Shamrock was a big pro wrestling star in Japan before his turns in both Pancrase and the UFC. Kazushi Sakuraba was the goddamn Gracie Killer in Pride. And arguably the smoothest, most technically proficient submission wrestler of his era (go watch his fight with Carlos Newton at I think it was Pride 5 for a masterclass in technical grapping).

Rikidozan, Korean name Shinrak Kim, was the founding father of Japanese puroresu... and also a violent man with anger issues. Kimura match aside, he would pick fights with people who even slightly crossed him, beat the absolute shit out of his own students like Giant Baba, Antonio Inoki and Kintaro Ohki while training them and stuff like that(it is speculated that Rikidozan's violent training methods affected the violent dojo/lockerroom nature in the pro wrestling business). Oh and also fun fact, Rikidozan sometimes would chew shot glasses to terrify his drinking buddies. That's wild.

Ironically that statements true in two regards Without Inoki NJPW wouldn’t have existed at all and become the premier Japan wrestling promotion and given so many wrestlers a chance world over But in that same vein he’s the same guy that nearly KILLED his own company when he went WAY to hard into the MMA scheme of his and lost audiences by having his wrestlers constantly lose to legit MMA stars and having guys like Bob Sapp win the IWGP title Inokism is considered a joke and insult for a reason after all That and everything to do with Lesner’s brief stint in NJPW did not help his case which is why most were happy when he left NJPW which says a lot compared to the past Where him losing caused a freakin riot

I can't believe he glossed over Yoshiko/Yasukawa. That was so brutal. Yoshiko nearly got blackballed from Japanese wrestling but Nanae Takanashi was not happy that Stardom tried to force Yoshiko to retire (with a public ceremony that Yoshiko walked out of) and basically started a whole other promotion just for Yoshiko to wrestle in. Yoshiko and Nanae eventually wrestled in Stardom again, and Yasukawa made a return in 2021 in the Actwres promotion

Largely caused it’s evolved so much through its multiple promotions APJW developed King’s Road which has a lot of European and American influence but is built around build up with harder and harder blows to targeted areas until you get to the match climax with the finishers or signatures NJPW Strong Style aims to dip into realism via MMA or at least actual contact hits with usage of martial arts or well aimed hits to look and feel real but to avoid the required spots for legit injuries Athleticism is incorporated depending on body type and to devise styles Even heavyweights will have at least one big move be something from the top rope sometimes like Kobashi’s Moonsault What helps them wrestle this way without as many worries as one would think is that the Japanese promotions do NOT work the ridiculous hours and dates the way WWE has tried to make it seem is expected They have shows and PPVs and tours As well as a weekly tv slot But they do not work a yearly, no off season, business Champions and wrestlers can take holidays without usually needing a injury angle to write them off They don’t do aggressive travel all around the world either, doing occasional excursions a few times a year is about it and only with a few wrestlers at most

Honestly, the great Antonio did mess around and find out, but also, Inoki hired somebody as an attraction who was garbage and not willing to do business which I feel should also be on him. Regardless, I hate stuff like this, as a wrestler you put your trust in your opponents and if they're just having a bad day, or you make the wrong mistake, enjoy your concussions and other injuries. Thank god this isn't as common now, and just because it's moderately related, fuck JBL.

Well Japanese pro wrestling along with Brazilian Vale Tudo actually played a giant part in what is modern MMA. What is considered like modern MMA in Japan predates the UFC and was basically created by pro wrestlers. Shooto founded by the first Tiger Mask and Pancrase were really the first MMA promotions in Japan to my knowledge. Also many of these shoots on this list predate what is modern MMA so they couldn’t have really done anything like that anyways but the closest thing to an “mma” was pro wrestling at the time and most of them did have a martial arts background like Masahiko Kimura (innovator of the Kimura lock and famously defeated Helio Gracie), Akira Maeda (even founded the hybrid pro wrestling and later full MMA promotion RINGS), Rikidozan, Choshu, Antonio Inoki, Koji Kitao, even Yoshiko decided to take your advice and go to MMA after her shoot fight with Act
