How to Create a Mohawk | Punk Hair Tutorial

Learn step by step how to create an 80's Punk Mohawk / Mohican
Ross Charles, award winning hairstylist goes through each step to give you guidance on how you can create this yourself. This version features 5 liberty spikes equally positioned down the centre of the head.

This is one of Ross' favourite styles to do bringing him back to being a teenager when he and his punk friends experimented with their hair in similar ways, laying a great foundation for his future career in hair and alternative styles.

The tools he used were an Andis T Outliner, a hairdryer and RC hairspray. its important to use fast drying hairspray that will solidify quickly with a hairdryer.

Also it's important to wash the hair thoroughly as this will give a good clean base to work on as greasy / oily or hair with old product in will impare the outcome. Ross used AlterEgo Italy Urban Proof Shampoo which give a deep cleanse and takes out pollution out of the hair at the same time. This shampoo is also vegan friendly.

Many Punk bands over the last 40 years have featured these hairstyles...
Like The Exploited, The Clash, The Casualties, One Way System, Chaos U.K.
There also was a great band in the 80's which wasn't really punk but had amazing punk hair.. they were called Sigue Sigue Sputnik. Very inspiring !

Great, from experience the longest length you will be able to cope with yourself when doing your hawk is determined on how long your arms are. I have known people that had to trim theres at a certain point to be able to do it themselves. Alternatively get someone else to do it for you, relax and save the arm ache ! . good luck !

This was such a simple tutorial, thank you! My hair is much shorter than that but I’ve struggled to get it to stay styled all day but I haven’t tried drying the hairspray in before. Maybe that will work better for me.

Washable elmers glue works really good for stubborn curly hair and it doesnt damage your hair. I used it for the first time, and my hair was nice and spiky

Gelatine. Egg whites. 1/2 cup of warm water. You have more chance of spikes snapping OFF than your 'hawk going lopsided.

Not really because gel is “heavier” then hair spray

Gel will only work on a very short mohawk , for a long mohawk you need hairspray
