Kunde is simply the greatest tenor that we have seen for decades, Florez also is an excellent singer, I’ve had the pleasure to hear both live and they definitely are worth it!

Die Kritiker feiern Olga als beste Rossini Interpretin,die Rossini wieder erweckt hat. Sie hat fuer Ihre Rossini CD den Echo Klassik Preis erhalten.Besser geht es nicht. Flores gilt so wie so als bester Bell Canto Saenger der Gegenwart.Eine ideale Besetzung.

These are the highest notes Rossini ever wrote for men - D sharp - & neither of the tenors manage it. Not surprising - are there any tenors around that can hit this note?

Only in scales have I done it... (On youtube: karifrid, tenor sings three octaves. E flat 2.28 - - I also sang a DEEP D.)

@@karifrid Its strange - women can hit the high notes one octave above men & can go much higher - even up to A flat but mens voices cant stretch that far. Presumably the vocal fold muscles arent strong enough. When do you hear a coloratura tenor? They dont seem to exist going above B or C above the stave?

@@karifrid Theres also a high D at the end of the duet between Fenicio & Pilade in Act 2 of Rossinis Ermione. But is not often sung.

@@anthonyehrenzweig7697 From my understanding, before the mid to late 19th century, most tenors sang any notes above a B in falsetto. So Rossini would have expected the D#s to be in falsetto. Unfortunately, most audiences today don't appreciate a well supported falsetto in men, and registers as feminine to them.

@@PhilosophicalDance Im not sure that is right. I think you are confusing falsetto with head voice or voce di testa. Thats what falsetto meant in the 19th century - voce di testa. There are 2 articles about 19th century tenor roles in the Opera magazine from about 30 years ago that make just such a point. I dont know whether anyone can dig them up. So Rossini did in fact write for head voice tenors & not for falsetto tenors. But there are very few tenors nowadays who can comfortably sing above high C with the head voice. Any suggestions?

Kunde looks like Bert Lahr. It's like they chickened out on doing blackface but couldn't figure out where else to go. Sounds great, but really embarrassing to watch.

Bellissimo duetto fra due tenori eccezionali ma Juan Diego Florez é decisamente il migliore nel confronto. Per lui il bel canto è vita, interpretazione scenica, acuti diamantini che non si sa dovrà vada a prendere, dizione eccezionale. Lo adoro come interprete rossiniano, la sua voce é fantastica e inconfondibile, la ascolterei sempre, sembra giocare con la voce e ti entra nel cuore. Eccezionale, il miglior tenore leggero del secolo.

Kunde al suo meglio! Florez qui va ancora bene , ma non mi piace più la sua voce : troppo nasale . Peretyatko mi è sempre piaciuta molto per il timbro particolare della voce, anche se ha difficoltà sugli acuti. 🙏🎼🎶 Bellissimo brano!

Florez is better looking - not that Kunde doesn't look just fine. Florez is just very handsome. He was chosen by the record companies as the one to promote. He looks good on record covers. But if you have ears you can recognize you can clearly hear that Kunde has the more substantial voice. I think he has better extreme high notes too. Remember that the toughest Rossini roles are those written for Nozarri. The Verdi baritone was not yet invented ( Verdi wasn't writing yet). The high tenor was the high tenor, but what would later be the baritone role in the drama was sung was sung by Nozari who had a lower voice with high extensions. That's why there are those very low notes in so many Rossini tenor roles. The most flexible Rossini tenor was Blake, The most heroic was Merrit, the one with the loveliest tone was Ford. The sweetest straight high tenor was probably Olsen. The most versatile and electrifying was Kunde. The most god awful is a either Metteuzi or Morino. Your choice.

I agree about Chris Merritt whose voice was so spectacular at his best. And he had the baritone depth that you mention in Rossini tenors. Especially the B flat 2 at the end of Otello's first aria. I was wondering why Rossini wrote for a quite different type of tenor to that of Verdi whose tenors rarely go above B flat 4 or below F 3. Its interesting that the best high tenors have been mostly American - Ford, Merritt, Blake, Kunde. (Is Kunde US?)

Does anyone even think about singers like June Anderson, Lella Cuberli, F. von Stade, Rockwell Blake, Bruce Ford, Curtis Ryam, Chris Merritt, Lucia Valentini, M. Horne that have revived Rossini? I am just thinking....is everyone just used to this general barking already?
